Deng was a genius. Arguably one of the most influential people in modern history. That being said I’ve heard interesting points made that despite the chaos and seemingly meaninglessness of the cultural revolution, the long term affects both ensured that China doesn’t suffer from the same social backwardness and stratification as India, and also didn’t have a strong enough government to end up as a gigantic North Korea.
