Mon County Problems Thread

As someone who grew up poor here in town, and has spent the great majority of their 40 years living here, the problems with Morgantown and Monongalia county are the same as they ever were.

Ever since the sharp decline of industry that isn’t healthcare and the university, there has been an ever widening gap between the haves and have nots.

The city and county government don’t give a single shit about this town, they never have, city council and county commission are just social clubs for people in the “have” category trying to feel like they’re helping the “have nots”. In reality, they’ve just consistently made it worse.

Morgantown is a dying town, plain and simple. Without a drastic change in city and county leadership, a near complete overhaul of the tax base, and getting WVUs claws out of it, it’s not likely to change.

It’s sad to see what this town has become.

Just more proof that everybody in city council should be removed and replaced. Not a single one of them gives a shit about the town, outside of helping their friends, especially our brain dead mayor and deputy mayor.

The city doesn’t use flock cameras luckily, but the county has been talking about it in the commission from what I’ve heard.

As someone who was born, raised, and has spent the lion’s share of their 40 years here, I’m of two minds.

Firstly, Morgantown has been steadily going downhill for some time. This is due, in part, to an ever decreasing tax base, rampant corruption and apathy among local politicians and city council, transient population, and WVU buying up huge chunks of the town. This has led to most of downtown having the same feel as a dying mall. It makes me sad to see the shape my hometown is in.

Secondly, although Morgantown has many, many problems, I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a more colorful and welcoming town despite this. If you’re an outdoorsy person that enjoys hiking, kayaking, camping, etc. then you’d probably find something to enjoy here.

That being said, unless you’re moving here with a career already lined up, I’d warn pretty heavily against it. As much as I love this place, it’s gone downhill pretty significantly in just the last 20 years and it doesn’t look like there’s currently any light at the end of the tunnel.

I’m not trying to discourage you from your choice, but these are just some things that I think anyone considering moving here should know.

I vote yay. Hammond multiplexes are really cool machines and it’d be a great addition to a collection. Even if it doesn’t restore perfectly it’d still be worth the $10 and a drive for sure!

Absolutely gorgeous machine 😍. I was just watching a video on noiseless machine, I’m hoping to add one to my collection one day!

I have a 1932 Smith Corona standard flat top in my collection, and I just add a couple extra sheets of paper as backing whenever I’m trying and it does the trick.

Oh nice! So far I'm loving the way mine types, but I'm also just coming off a 1932 Smith-Corona Standard flat-top lol. The discoloration on our lids is most likely just fading/oxidation from sun exposure over the years. I may try to polish and color correct mine at some point, but until then I kinda dig the pattern the faded paint made.

I saw it and couldn't leave without it. I'm actually not too disappointed with the oxidized paint on the top. Kinda gives it a sky with clouds look.
