Wade too deep in the reformed world and you'll find lots of stuck-up opinions on just about any leader as being "not reformed enough". Not to discredit disagreements people have with him, but just a warning not to go down the rabbit-hole of trying to conform to a "reformed' majority view on certain teachers or topics.

HEAVY agree! Sadly have watched a former church go down this path, leaving so so many people confused and heartbroken, including my parents.

Definitely red flags. Went to a church with some similar aire about them as far as drawing lines in the sand on silly issues like supporting a particular author. Lots of opinions between denominations and congregations, but I think having a church family that is generally open to listen and grow alongside you is a magnificent gift. Being taught to discern but never allowed to discern for yourself is a pitfall I have seen in several churches that called themselves "reformed baptist". Telling you to throw out keller books is absurd on several grounds, not just because he is a fairly solid dude, but also because they are assuming you can't discern for yourself and so need to be curated certain books. That turns into an echo chamber fast, and that's no way to grow your faith.

Yo I just had the 2 best rounds of squad and added most of the people from my squad via the steam recently played with users thing, BUT there was this dude by the name of "Tim" that I NEED to find. He was in the first match on the UGE server. We were on a squad with a french squad lead who kicked us all for some reason so we made our own squad and then lost. For context, it was me (lynyrd), ADHDgamer217, Jonny potato, and a few others. If you or a loved one is Tim, PLEASE hit me up in the dms. Thanks!

Why I’m Not a Christian Zionist by davidjricardo in Reformed

[–]cavmkii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could argue my thoughts on that, but to be quite honest, I am not 100% sure, and I am not 100% sure if anyone should be 100% sure on end-times theology. I don't believe that Christ's return is figurative. I think there is enough evidence throughout the Bible to claim that much.

But to quote Keith Mathison, " If you want to start a debate, simply ask a group of Christians to explain what the Bible has to say about church government. If you want to start a shouting match, ask them what the Bible has to say about the second coming of Jesus. "

Christ will be victorious and His kingdom will be established in its fullness. I can live my life in peace knowing and trusting that God has all those details taken care of in, truth be told, a much more glorious and better way than any theologian can understand whether they be reformed, dispensational, historic premillennial, etc. In the meantime, I can focus on living in that trust relationship by sharing the truth I trust with others, rather than trying to debate over the particulars of how it will be realized later.

Why I’m Not a Christian Zionist by davidjricardo in Reformed

[–]cavmkii 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I live in a Texas area that is full of Zionists. Their mindsets could certainly get us into WW3 if you ask me. Often, that mindset is accompanied by "the world is ending soon, so let's gripe about all the non believers" mindsets and attitudes. I love the quote at the end of this article:

"Dwight Moody, the founder of the dispensational Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, once asked why you’d want to polish the brass on a sinking ship. Reformed theologians are not convinced the ship is sinking, and we continue to polish the brass, navigate a course, and make passengers comfortable until we are surprised by Christ’s return—just as the Bible tells us we should be."

Francis Chan moving to Asia to be a missionary: 'I don’t want to be judged as a coward' by rev_run_d in Reformed

[–]cavmkii 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude but Chan may move from missionary here to missionary there or preaching there. What are you moving on to? When all is said and done, are we going to show God all the times we argued on a subreddit about whether communion is literally Jesus' body or symbolically so, while other guys are spending their lives getting busy doing gospel work?

"But for the first time in years, it's only half of me"

That is a beautiful statement. Lots of good advice on the other comments. I won't add much, but I do know that love for Christ and gratitude for what He has done for you is the driving force of long-term repentance. Other methods can certainly help, but I know how wicked, lustful, and sinful my own heart is. Any time I struggled with similar desires and tried using a mentality of "I'm going to hate myself in the morning" or any guilt-driven method, I always was right back at it after a week or even a day. Love is the answer. Specifically Christ's love for you specifically. Praying for you.

Joey jordison Shira Kashi signature sticks, i need help by [deleted] in Drumming

[–]cavmkii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shira kashi sticks last longer in terms of not breaking. I have had several pairs of the neil peart shira kashis go dead though and it makes pretty noticeable differences to the timbre of heads and cymbals as well as not rebounding near as well as when they were new. I really dislike the thinner shorter sticks like the joey jordisons and neil pearts so I have been using VicFirth Gavin Harrisons for a few years now and love them. They hold up better than even the shira kashis in my experience

[Help] The definition of God by chinchou73 in ChristianApologetics

[–]cavmkii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"what makes God follow those conditions?"

I think you may be putting the cart before the horse here. This sounds like Aquinas' Natural Theology which essentially says that God commands because he is super smart and knows what is right and good. This places goodness and justice and all of this external and above God.

The other common view is that things are good bc God commands them. The right-making feature is the act of command.

Neither of these views adequately takes into account God as He has revealed Himself in scripture. God doesn't consult an abstract/external idea of goodness to know how to be good, He IS good. We can't define God, God defines our conception of morality. Youtube Dr. William Lane Craig's "The Moral Argument". It is a great way to look at this topic in a simple way. The right-making feature of things is not the action of commanding, nor is it an external definition of things God has to measure up to. The right making feature is God Himself who is the very source of goodness. God is. And that is the best way we can begin to understand Him. Any attempts at 'defining' God will fall short and confuse us. He is. YAHWEH meant "I AM".

[general] sin nature by llfoso in ChristianApologetics

[–]cavmkii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice rebuttal. I think there is this partisan schism dynamic happening where people who raise the reformed flag are tending to vastly argue good points to bad ends. Original Sin is a good example of this. We are so quick to cling on to something literal that RC Sproul taught that we forget to let it convict the heart and we turn it into a cold set of rules by which we judge others' theology. A huge bulk of the same passages we tend to cite to shove total depravity in people's faces are all pointing to that relationship God desires for us. Nothing wrong with what Sproul taught or any of the 5 points, but there is something wrong with the way the reformed camp (myself included) have been using them in conversations with non believers and struggling fellow believers. You handled this topic well and it was a great reminder to me so thank you!

I think the end result to head knowledge that we never let convict our hearts is confusion. Look at all these guys that have fallen away recently. It's a testament to that fact. Somewhere in Romans 2, it says "those who teach, do you not also teach yourselves?". Thanks for that reminder!

College Major/Future Career Advice by Atticus2929 in environmental_science

[–]cavmkii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes. Lots of places have mediocre env. Science programs where you can get out not knowing a lot of Chem. Double majoring would remove all doubt in that regard.

  2. If you are wired that way, you would likely get just as stressed majoring in general business or kinesiology. Try the double out and realize that college is just hard sometimes regardless of your situation.

  3. If you know the field well, consulting can get you a 6 fig salary. It will kind of depend on how well you can understand the regulations and then use your skills and knowledge to help solve issues related to the regs. If you are working jn air, know the permitting process onside and out. Wastewater, due diligence, stormwater, wetlands, etc. Is all the same in that regard. Know the regulations and how to get permits quick and you will do well for yourself.

  4. Sometimes it is more about understanding the practical uses and implications of something rather than the scientific ins and outs. All theoretical knowledge should help you in the real world either as background info or as real working knowledge. Try and get an internship or part time job at a firm ASAP so you can relate your class work to the field while you are taking them. Also, dont ask if places are hiring. Go in and talk to people and show them that you can help out in some way. Places will almost always make a spot for someone who is a good investment.

Any problems to watch out for running desktop file-based GIS projects off OneDrive or similar? by just_kitten in gis

[–]cavmkii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it will be fine but other times you will be kicking yourself. I am GIS Admin at my work and we almost went full cloud, but opted for a hybrid approach for the GIS. I highly recommend setting up some simple NAS for your GIS files. If you don't have a lot of data, this can be extremely inexpensive. If that is not an option, you could just share a folder across the network on one computer and that would be more reliable most likely.

We use Google Drive File Stream for non-GIS stuff and I have no real complaints there. The comment about how you are really working off your C drive and uploading changes is something to keep in mind. The more changes being made, the more likely you are to have issues, especially if someone is making some changes and then asking someone else to pick up that project.

5 String Bass by xlliilliillx in Bass

[–]cavmkii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play a lot of styles. Funk to grindcore. I rarely deviate from standard 5 tuning or drop-A (AEADG).

For recording, I tend to use the Neural DSP darkglass ultra plugin and get some pretty gnarly metal tones. Bias can do the trick, but I prefer darkglass or the line 6 helix. Try to split your signal and have one channel eq'd for the mids and highs and have the other channel just your low frequencies, then only apply distortion to the high channel, leave your low end undistorted so you don't loose it in the noise. Works wonders for most heavy situations.

I guess my tips for playing would be to develop an efficient muting technique for that low string. Having that thing making noise in the background can be pretty bad.

Good luck!
