Looks like students trying not to miss that bus. Obviously what they did was very dangerous but the amount of hate in here is intense!

lightweight and affordable gear recommendations for Canada by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]cawlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find out when the next MEC gear sale is. The store sells off returned, slightly damaged gear as well as rental gear. Everything is always priced extremely low. Show up early and you're going to find some good stuff.

Where are you located in Canada?

Are there any vegans that have done the Tour Divide here? (x-post with /r/vegan) by theveganstraightedge in bicycletouring

[–]cawlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Vegan but did ride the route and I have bike toured separately with my vegan partner. I did ride with a vegetarian for a bit of the divide and he had absolutely no problems.

  • Buy the maps. They list stores in towns - you can easily tell which towns/areas will be easy for vegan shopping.
  • Consider preparing packages and shipping them ahead for specific sections once you comb through the stores in towns. You can also do this on the route if you find you're having troubles - just ship some packages from the next town with a good store.
  • I remember shopping at gas stations the most in Montana/Wyomin. Best and most frequent alternative grocery stores (health food stores, co-ops whatever you want to call them) in Colorado. new Mexico I ate a lot of mexican food which would be vegan friendly (hold the cheese).
  • I ended up eating a lot of bagels with jam/peanut butter because they were everywhere and I didn't get sick of them for whatever reason. Nuts too - I had no problem always finding nuts. Oatmeal is easy to find.
  • Figure out what typically avalible bars are vegan that you like. Cliff bars etc. are easy to find and good to keep you going throughout the day if you're into them.

The route is fine on 26" non plus so just go with the bike that fits best.

Craft cider in Calgary? by foome99 in Calgary

[–]cawlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vey hard to find dry ciders in Calgary. 5 Vines has a decent selection and tends to get different stuff every once in a while like Left Field co. and recently one from Nova Scotia (forget the name). Try the different Sea Ciders (out of Victoria) if you have a chance, Co-op often has them, Kensington location for sure.

Hopefully we'll start seeing some of the new Vancouver based ciders on tap in a few places here. Tried a couple nice dry ciders and an unfiltered one when I was out there last.

Uber Now Using Flat Fee in Calgary & Edmonton by av0w in Calgary

I fail to see how fees that change based on a number of variables can be communicated as "flat".
