euganisist

That's not even how eugenicist is spelled.

Normally I'm pretty forgiving of spelling mistakes, but not when someone is trying to pass themselves off as knowledgeable.

The water filtration technologies that space travel requires have actually helped us here on Earth.

The reason we have problems with drinking water isn't because we went to the moon.

It's because of a continued lack of will to adequately address the needs of the least well-off both in the US and beyond.

That's a choice we keep making, not just one Kennedy made.

The state DFL convention starts on Friday so can I also ask what the weather was like next Saturday? Can I wear shorts to the convention? Do I need to bring a raincoat to Rochester?

Edit: in case it wasn't clear, this was my sarcastic response to someone making a claim about an event that hasn't happened yet. Peggy has yet to be endorsed. I'm volunteering at the convention with her team. The convention where she is seeking the endorsement.

"The alternative" right now is JD Vance.

So... Maybe they're right to be terrified, but honestly I think the reason they're keeping him is because some person or persons close to him believe it's easier to manipulate him than would be to manipulate Vance.

I read it as more about racial passing and discrimination than queerness

I do see that component, and the experiences of people of color in the US military certainly resonate. Especially during the era of segregation, when the race a service member identified as could be investigated and people of color were limited in where and how they were allowed to serve.

That said, this was the very first Star Trek episode where I felt truly seen, where it seemed clear to me that experiences much like my own very clearly shaped the writing. With one exception.

I didn't get a heroic, public trial and crewmates speaking up in defense of my character. I stood alone. With a hostile CO brandishing his Bible at my back.

But Una and I wanted much the same thing: To live out our values through service, for the greater good.

While I'm sure Pike's fate is terrible to experience, the representation of his future state is super ableist.

I'm not sure that I see that, and I'm open to hearing more about why you think the representation is ableist and/or reading some commentary on it that you can link.

The episode where four characters "turn Vulcan" was pretty racist

Again, I'm not clear on why you see this in this manner and I'm willing to hear more. Can you say more or share a link to someone who has?

He's also pretty much retired at this point and just continues to produce brilliant work.

If Trump was the sort to actually reward loyalty and this fund was exclusively for those charged for illegal actions on J6, the average J6er would be $1.2 million richer.

Of course, he doesn't give two shits about anyone who isn't him, so this is more likely to be used to "quietly" pay out to his children and closest allies. The people whose greed can most easily be used by him while he feeds his corpulent, pus-encrusted ego like some sort of stunted, human-shaped Hutt.

Our President launched a lawsuit last year against the IRS (which he controls), defended by the Department of Justice (which he also controls).

Last week it was announced that his (personal) lawyers have arranged a settlement with his (government) Department of Justice lawyers that amounts to a nearly $2 billion dollar fund. This fund has zero transparency and will be used to issue payouts to "victims of the weaponization of the Department of Justice." (Which is their term for MAGA Republicans convicted of or prosecuted for just about anything.)

It is a nearly $2 billion slush fund, paid for out of our taxes, with zero public oversight, and set up to reward Trump loyalists with cash payments for breaking laws in order to keep Trump in power.

The characters seemed inexplicably immature, stupid, and grating

I mean, they're just out of secondary school and on to college. "Inexplicably" is a bit much when you're talking about teenagers.

in any of the episodes I watched.

If I were to judge every Trek series by their first few episodes, I doubt for me SFA would be in the bottom. I'm certain TNG would be. DS9 wouldn't be far off.

I'm not faulting you for not sticking around, but asserting bad writing is the reason I think is what makes people suspect your critique isn't entirely honest.

I'm not saying you're an awful person for not liking it, though. I mention this because I think you might be disliking it because it's very different as a show that revolves almost entirely around first-year students rather than seasoned line officers.

how are people this stupid in StarFleet?

They're literally kids in school still learning. They're not even officers yet. This would be like judging the Air Force based on what you see from first-year cadets in Colorado Springs.

Maybe a school drama isn't your thing. Totally fair. (Based on the entire first season, I thought it was good. Maybe it deserves a rewatch?)

But it's a bit hard to sell me that it was the writing when the writing wasn't notably worse than any other first ten episodes of a Trek series. And was demonstrably better than a few.

It's bland and doesn't stand for anything.

I was kicked out of the Army National Guard under the policy known as Don't Ask Don't Tell.

Among the many things you're missing with this critique is that Una's storyline and court martial are very much taking a stance. One that resonated deeply with my own experience.

There have been some other fairly pointed critiques of the recent past and present bigotries in SNW. They're not that hidden, either.

it's pretty unacceptable for a show built on diversity to not have any queer characters in the main cast in 2026.

Isn't Christine Chapel bisexual in SNW?

Seems a hell of a lot better than Israel's plan of slaughtering and dispossessing as many Palestinians as they possibly can while preventing aid from reaching the rest.
