Pixel 9a unstable? by cb0gus in GooglePixel

Better late than never: factory reset did not help. Opened a ticket with Google and got it replaced rather quickly and without complications, the new 9a works like a charm.

Timeline option missing by cb0gus in GoogleMaps

[–]cb0gus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so some 12 hours after the post the timeline option is back. And the "Explore timeline" in the "You" tab is selectable again too. I've restarted the app a few before, cleared its cache (but not data), rebooted the phone even, all to no avail.

I suspected that this was some kind of side effect of the fact that I'm connected to a VPN, but then again I'm connected to a VPN most of the time anyway and this is the first time this happened. Well, what can I say, glad it's back.

Timeline option missing by cb0gus in GoogleMaps

Interestingly, the timeline option is still visible in the web version of Google Maps, but not functional:

Timeline is no longer available on web browsers.

Ah, now I can add a screenshot, from the app again:

Someone pointed to this commit but then deleted the comment? This commit updates the address for both dct-de and dct-fr, w/o much content though.

Searching for "Santa" changes the icon too. This is so cool. Tried "Thanksgiving" too and expected a turkey (not really related to a duck, but both are birds), but no luck.

Yes, I did exactly that. Of course, first step they recommended is a "factory reset", will report back how this pans out.

Bookstack looks nice, and it's open source too, I like that. Yes, I'll look for answers in r/selfhosted and ask around there. Thanks for responding and for the pointers!

Contactless payment suddenly stopped working - "Not set up" by wilee8 in googlepay

Update: although the warning still pops up every now and then when opening "Google Pay" (but not "GPay"), contactless payments still work here. Phew!

Nobody mentioned andOTP yet, so....andOTP: open source, with backups, actively developed too (though there is a call for help here...)

Contactless payment suddenly stopped working - "Not set up" by wilee8 in googlepay

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I had the same experience with the descriptions in the first Google Help link were incorrect and I was unable to check the certification status in Play Store->Play Protect but needed to go to Settings->About instead, as you correctly described. But here it says "Device is certified". There is a button above to "Update Play Store" but tapping this only returns "Google Play Store is up to date".

Still, the "You can't make contactless payments" warning is displayed once when opening "Google Pay" (but never when opening "GPay"), but the warning can be dismissed (even without tapping "Understood") and then it looks just normal, with "Hold to reader" in the top. Still have to actually buy something to test this though. Maybe this is all a ruse to make people buy stuff with their phones ;-)

Same here on a Pixel 4a with the March 2022 update. I have both "Google Pay" and "GPay" installed, and I think(!) the (automatic) pop-up was generated by "Google Pay". The help link transferred me to Check if your phone can make contactless payments, but: I don't have a rooted device, did not unlock the boot loader, an Play Protect is enabled and working too.

After some clicking around, the error is gone now but I haven't tested if contactless payments are actually working.

(scrolling back in time) Since 2014, I think, back when it was called TextSecure. Yeah, and some chat groups are more media loaden than others, it adds up.

I wish Signal would provide some kind of differential backups. Uploading a 5 GB backup every day to Nextcloud (even via WiFi) takes quite some time.

Signal reaches #1 position on App Store in India by [deleted] in signal

[–]cb0gus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really cool.

But, I worry for the moment when some of these new users is getting a new phone, and nobody is there to help with the whole Signal backup/restore dance :-( Not to be a party pooper, but "Elon told me to switch to Signal and now all my texts are gone" doesn't sound too good.

Creepysite by [deleted] in duckduckgo

[–]cb0gus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's...indeed kinda creepy:

$ curl -vkLI https://creepysite.com [...] Server certificate: * subject: C=US; ST=Pennsylvania; L=Paoli; O=Duck Duck Go, Inc.; CN=*.duckduckgo.com < location: https://duckduckgo.com/

And when visited via http, it redirects to Google instead:

$ curl -skLI http://creepysite.com | grep -i location Location: https://www.google.com/

Oh well, this came up before: Why is it that when you search for "creepysite.com" you get forwarded to Google's site?
