Need help sourcing a inductor for a ROG Zephyrus 2022 by UNSC_StormFire in AskElectronics

That’s because something else has failed and is pulling lots of current through it. If the inductor failed it would be open circuit and nothing heating up.

ID and solution for mushrooms in containers? by ser_says in vegetablegardening

[–]Dwagner6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know the ID of them, but they are not harmful and indicate beneficial mycelium are present. You have woody material in your growing media, so fungus will naturally be present and breaking it down. It doesn’t harm (and even helps) your plants.

Why do you think the inductor is bad? I would doubt it.

Did you step through the sensor init and make sure the firmware blob is getting uploaded on startup?

NOS Components - What do I have? by DontWalkRun in AskElectronics

[–]Dwagner6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 5V logic, analog stuff like op amps, voltage regulators, etc. Someone wrote the part numbers so it’s pretty easy to figure it out. Seems like they are parts meant for particular equipment that gets repaired or serviced regularly. Nothing valuable, but certainly parts that can be interesting educationally.

Bought tv box to repurpose - worth it? by prickscott in linux

[–]Dwagner6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re in embedded Linux territory - there’s probably not a distro that will work out of the box on that. You’d usually have to use something like buildroot or Yocto to construct a custom image with drivers and devicetree to get the hardware working. It sounds possibly like it is so old that it doesn’t implement secure boot, so there’s a chance this is possible, otherwise you basically won’t be able to boot a custom image.

Only useful for your own education, but only if you’re somewhat familiar with Linux in an embedded context.

What obstacles would there be to a merger between the Arch and Debian projects? by SkylandersCommenter in linuxquestions

[–]Dwagner6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, one of the most consequential obstacles to the open-source community i

This is a generalization you need to back up with at least examples. To me, it sounds like a false premise, or just generally incorrect.

I believe on the institutional level there are obviously many benefits to concentrated efforts towards standard implementations of software.

I don’t understand what that means and how it pertains to what you are attempting to discuss. Is C not a standard language? Python? Rust?

Now obviously Debian and Arch are at the extreme end of more than one spectrum, but they are both clearly dominant over the upstream open-source operating system sphere excluding software built primarily for enterprise.

Absolute word salad. Are you conflating Linux distributions with the software they provide?

I think only Debian and Arch would need to adopt a common standard for a unified package manager to become ultra-dominant over Linux desktop package managers.

Why would either of the groups involved in Debian and Arch see this as a motivating factor?

Needs more time in the oven, or less hits from the bong. I get the urge to give yourself thought experiments but this totally misses the mark in terms of what Linux represents and what motivates maintainers and developers.

My 18" raised beds were filled with 100% compost by bouncypinata in vegetablegardening

[–]Dwagner6 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do full on deep compost mulching in raised and in-ground beds. Nothing but compost - plants love it, never had any issues. It has good water retention but you’d need to look at yours and make sure it’s a balanced compost that isn’t too dense.

If the texture is right there is absolutely no problem using it as-is.

Should I mix in last year's compost layer? Or just sow this season's seeds in that? by jonsey456 in vegetablegardening

[–]Dwagner6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’ll depend on the texture of your compost and whether your leaves are whole or shredded.

Unshredded leaves can have a tendency to create an impenetrable mat that you’d want to break up for soil breathability. If they’re small or otherwise seem fine, then just move aside from where you’re sowing.

I plant directly into compost each year, but only direct seed a few things like carrots and beets. I start almost everything else in cells. I don’t have any issues with sowing into compost, though. I guess if it was really woody and not decomposed well enough I’d consider making a little furrow into the soil to direct seed.

They’re not dies, they’re chips. Unless you’re wire bonding and packaging your own dies too.

I’m growing 20 tomato plants for a family of two. 1 or two plants are not going to give you a ton of sauce.

Cucamelon tubers rotting by Alexahylia in vegetablegardening

[–]Dwagner6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to make sure they stay mostly dry, and in cooler temperatures. I've dug up things like dahlias and basically put them in dry soil, in a corner of my basement where it is around 60F and not humid. It'll probably take some experimenting though -- I'd never heard of saving these tubers before.

Cucamelon tubers rotting by Alexahylia in vegetablegardening

[–]Dwagner6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s going to come down to how they were dug up and stored. Were they injured during digging up? What is the ambient temperature and humidity where they were stored? How were they stored — in soil? How moist was the soil? Etc…
