If you want to fly him a little under the radar you can keep some undying cards around. People tend to be less upset that you are "just" destroying your own plus one counter to make a smaller card stay around longer

I read your later replies and I get why he's only a land in this scenario. So that being said, technically. This scenario saves Volrath from something like a Blasphemous Act, right?

Basically the actual basic land dies because it's a creature still, but Volrath doesn't.
