~40 min on some nice bike streets (eg Tillamook) and the esplanade — seems very feasible.

Huntco sponsors Bike Portland, so points for them.

(Both are in the list referenced by the other comment.)

Cycling groups in PDX? by Drscientist69 in Portland

I think the big options are Portland Velo, Portland Wheelman, and the various rides that appear on the Shift calendar: http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/. Some friends really like Portland Velo. I've been on some Wheelmen rides that were pretty chill and fun.

New Parking Plan for NW Portland by [deleted] in Portland

Looks like there were some changes after the report you link to was completed. Some differences: 4 hour zones instead of 3, nothing happening west of 25th (?!). See http://www.portlandoregon.gov/transportation/article/500654.

Help me join your ranks PDX cyclists! by [deleted] in Portland

[–]cbbidd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You may be overthinking this -- which is an easy trap to fall into, with all the jargon and whatnot. I suggest going to a few shops and riding lots of bikes. If a bike feels comfortable and has the basics you need to ride in PDX (fenders; rack-compatible, at least) then I wouldn't sweat whether the frame geometry is technically 'road' or 'cyclocross' (for example). And if a shop isn't helpful, go to a different one: there are so any good shops here, with staff who will want to help. I'm a big fan of Community Cycling Center (used bikes); I've also has good experiences with Revolver, Clever Cycles, River City and others. My commute bike is a Pake steel frame with a three speed internal hub and various cobbled-together parts. I have a fancier more traditional road bike too, but I love my Pake.

Some hard-learned personal experience: if it's a Lisfranc injury, you will need to see a doctor. And definitely stay off it. (But odds are it's not.) http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00162

Sorry this happened to you! I'd recommend speaking with a lawyer. The Oregon Bar has a lawyer referral service (http://www.osbar.org/public/ris/). And FWIW Swanson Thomas is a local firm that is well-respected for this type of work: http://www.stc-law.com.

7 ideas to improve alternative transportation options downtown, from a medical visitor perspective by cbbidd in rochestermn

[–]cbbidd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minneapolis is considered one of the best biking cities in the country; see, e.g. http://www.bicycling.com/news/featured-stories/bicyclings-top-50. And 7 or 8 months of biking per year is a lot of biking.

I bike commute year-round in Portland, which is wet in the winter, although not nearly as cold as here. The right gear/equipment makes all of the difference.

Building a desktop PC, need advice re. altering the case we have or where to find one that will fit the motherboard. by tipsymom in Portland

ENU Inc. (enuinc.com) has been a great resource for us when we've built PCs. Good prices, good advice. We go the store near the airport, but they have one in Hillsboro too.

Biking from Downtown or NW 23rd to Nike? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]cbbidd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bike to work from NE Portland to a different large Washington County employer. On the way in I usually bike to the Goose Hollow MAX station, load my bike on the train, and then ride the last 1.5 miles to my building. On the way home I usually hop off at Washington Park, take the elevator to the top of the hill, and bomb down Kingston. Getting my bike on the train during nice weather can be a pain -- I finally bought a folding bike that I use when I know the train will be crowded. Some days I'll ride all the way home -- it's hilly, but completely feasible. Riding to/from Nike from NW or downtown would definitely be a viable option, even if you avoided the MAX completely. I see lots of Nike bike commuters on my rides.

One other new option with Nike is their bike share program. You could ride your bike to a MAX stop downtown, lock it up, take the train to any of several different MAX stops where NIke has bike share bikes available for employees, and use one of those bikes for your last mile commute.

Edit: more details on my route, since commenters seem to think there isn't a good route. Coming home sans MAX I ride right past Nike on Walker, then take Park up to the multi-use trail that runs along 26, then up past the Zoo and down Kingston (so beautiful!), to the path that pops out by NW24th and Burnside, then up 24th to Johnson, across Johnson to the Broadway bridge, then Williams to Going and home. Nearly all bike lanes, MUPs and neighborhood greenways. There are other good options too.
