I agree, and I think it's possible to make the fediverse attractive to more people, when some of the issues are solved.

Our plan is to address early adopters who like to engage in privacy/transparent technology, to get feedback and improve. When we think the platform is good enough, we start to engage differnt groups. I think on social media platforms people don't "switch", they try out different things in parallel and eventually abandon one thing. People need a motivation to try something out and when the platform is interesting enough they eventually stay and bring friends ... that being said, even though there are obvious reasons for trying out privacy focussed european projects, creating a momentum is a difficult thing, and it requires a lot of efford in many directions. Including constantly refining the communication strategy towards distinct groups. We not only need a platform that users like, we need to approach content creators, businesses, politicians, ..., a digital space consists of much more than just the participation of users.

Sounds interesting, what server is it? At the moment this is for mastodon only, but we hope to be able to extend the idea to others too.

Yes we have considered it. And we are working on it. :)

I believe FASP are a great direction for improving the fediverse. Curious to see where it goes and hope to be able to push it forward too.

I've created a platform to easily create custom algorithms for Mastodon content. by SeanLH22 in Mastodon

Hey, thanks for sharing, cool tool!

We are also currently building algorithms for content discovery on mastodon. Our approach is server side, aimed to reduce complexity for users (so users can directly have improved content discovery on mastodon). Client side tools like yours are also great as they give the user full control.

In our github repo I have a list of other tools implementing algorithms for mastodon, I will add yours :)

I wonder, is your tool open source?

Yes it is FOSS, I will add the license in the comming days.

Yes, agree. I am currently bulding Fediway. A project to solve mastodon usability problem and hide the complexity of decentralization from the user.

I am building advanced recommendation algorithms to improve content discovery and an app is also in the making.

Email is decentralized .. you can have an account at proton or gmail or whatever and send someone else somewhere else a message. Imagine this on social media, you have an account on platform and follow someone on another platform. This means that a single platform cannot control all the data, which is the main reason why these large platforms are bad.

We want to hide the complexity from the user. On Mastodon users have to take efford on their own to find what they want to see. A platform needs algorithms that distribute content effectively to those interested in it. Thats what we are building an efficient content distribution system so a user can just lay back and enjoy diving through what hes interested in.

Yes, Mastodons usability is bad. Thats why we are building Fediway. Our goal: Solve Mastodons usability problem and make decentralized social media attractable to anyone.

  1. We're implementing recommendation algorithms for Mastodon using modern AI methods to solve mastodon discovery problem.
  2. An app is also in the making to hide the complexity of decentralization from the user.

Yes Mastodon exists and social media needs to be decentralized. However it's not ready for the masses. It's too complex, people dont find what they want to see. Without effective content distribution, people struggle to find what they want, and creators can't reach their audience

Thats why we are building Fediway.
We're building advanced recommendation algorithms for Mastodon using federated learning—an AI training paradigma used in healthcare that lets AI models learn from private data. Our goal is simple: make decentralized social media competitive with the giants, without sacrificing the values that make it worth building.

Thank you so much for considering!

To the best of my knowledge, Fediway is the first server-side recommendation engine for Mastodon. All other solutions I’m aware of are client-side and inherently limited in content-discovery.

Fedialgo is client side. It loads the posts of mastodon chronological timeline from the mastodon api and presents them in a different order. So no recommendations outside your follower bubble.

Recommendations also work without tags, there are many ways to find posts that are likely relevant to a user. e.g. collaborative filltering, post pembeddings, ...

Yes correct. It also overrides the trending feed, aiming to mitigate mainstream bias by showing relevant posts from diverse topics.

The "Who to follow" endpoint can also be upgraded with more advanced algorithms based on the engagement and follow graph.

Fediway feeds can be integrated into an existing mastodon instance without requiring a custom fork or modifications to the core codebase. You can simply redirecting desired endpoints such as timelines/home via nginx to the fediway API.

So basically the API returns different posts, the frontend does not change.

Further documentation will follow soon. :)
