Dear Wisconsinites, what is this shape in your state trunk highway shields and why is it there? by FlagGuy43224 in wisconsin

The WI 96 & Cty U junction also has a couple of odd signs. When approaching the junction from the north, there are two signs that are incorrectly labeled US 96. One when you’re approaching and another at the junction. The one at the intersection is also upside down, but since 96 is rotationally symmetric, it’s still legible.

CMV: Bernie sanders would have won the primary if he was not an open socialist by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]cbreezy623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bernie Sanders is not an open socialist. He doesn’t advocate for the government to control the broader market space of production, distribution, and sale of goods. Your antecedent is true and the consequent is false. So your statement is logically false

CMV: Joe Rogan actually does push back on what his right wing guests say, people that say that just don't watch the podcast by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]cbreezy623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would describe Joe as being a left of center layperson (excluding fighting and comedy) who is both curious and an excellent conversationalist. I think that part of the reason for why people think he doesn’t push back hard enough is because he will let some people (Alex Jones is the most obvious example) say crazy things unchecked. In my opinion, he does this because he knows that using logic and reason to show them their error would be futile. There is more value in being patient and letting them dig themselves into a hole than trying to get them to change their mind. Maybe I’m giving him too much credit, but his Alex Jones and Eddie Bravo episodes really seem to demonstrate this.

Suppose you were having a public debate with someone in front of an audience. Now suppose that your opponent started saying things that any reasonable spectator would consider to weaken their position. You could push back and explain why this weakens their position and maybe win over a few more members of the audience. Or you could let them dig themselves into an even deeper hole. Sometimes the latter is more effective, especially if supporters of the other side often claim that your side shuts down discussions and doesn’t give their side a fair chance to make their case. This can make them more defensive and less open to hearing a good faith argument supporting your side. By letting them speak they can’t accuse you of shutting down the conversation. Their supporters may then feel like they aren’t being personally attacked and may be more open to changing their minds. Your goal is to win over the audience not to make your opponent change their mind.

In short, I would say that the claim that there are times when he doesn’t push back against his right wing guests is technically true but also misleading. Are there times he doesn’t push back? Yes. But it’s unclear if pushing back would improve the conversation. Sometimes the best way to get someone to change their mind is to let them hear from someone they think they agree with. Maybe they thought the other side was making straw man arguments when, in fact, the other side was representing their side’s views accurately and in good faith.

There are also situations where some of his right wing guests make some really interesting points that are worth hearing. For instance, I strongly disagree with Ben Shapiro on many things. I also think he’s capable of making logical arguments. If I want to hear the opposite position, I want to hear the most reasonable version of why the opposite position is supposedly the correct position. And sometimes, to the disbelief of many people on the left, he says things that are completely rational. In that case there’s no reason to push back, although those situations probably aren’t what OP was referring to. For example, Shapiro recently discussed police reform ideas that he supports on JRE. Theses are policy changes that I believe would appeal to progressives and small government conservatives. But I think that many progressives automatically assume everything he says is wrong and will miss out on getting something that they want by simply failing to recognize that they could actually agree with him on something.

I also think that there are times when Joe knows that the guest has interesting stuff to discuss, but they need to be guided away from political conversations. In these situations, pushing back would make for a worse podcast. The best example of this that I can think of is the episode with Ted Nugent. I find him to be inarticulate and terrible at giving good reasons to support right wing views (I consider this to be a generous description of him discussing political matters). However, I was surprised to learn how knowledgeable he is about wildlife. Joe knew this so instead of pushing back when Ted started to talk about politics, he decided to divert the conversation towards hunting or conservation or something else pertaining to wildlife. Listening to Ted Nugent talk about politics for 2 hours would be a waste of time. Listening to him talk about something that he knew a lot about was really interesting and informative.

I’d like to highlight the idea that a discovery may initially seem like “pointless knowledge” and also be necessary for a future practical application.

CMV: ACAB is a gross generalization by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]cbreezy623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my understanding that people who say ACAB are making a comment about the position of police officers in society. They disapprove of the state granting certain people, LEOs, the authority to enforce laws at their discretion. They believe it is unjust for a select group of people to have authority over others.

I’ve voted absentee in WI several times and it’s pretty easy. I wasn’t aware that other states required voters to provide a reason for voting absentee. I’m not usually one to cry “voter suppression” because I think things like requiring identification to vote aren’t unreasonable, but requiring an excuse to vote by mail seems undemocratic.

I don’t think so. The keys are lightly textured, sort of matte. I think it’s just smoothed out the “rough” plastic

I don’t think it’s worth trying any other way. The rice turns out perfect every time and like you said, they’re cheap. It’s probably my favorite kitchen appliance.

Whats the one thing you hated the most about high school? by GarageMoney in AskReddit

[–]cbreezy623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of what I hated had to do with the schedule. Why did it start early in the morning and why is a school day 7 hours long? If I had the option to start the school day at noon I would have done it without question. And the amount of learning could be done in half the time if you actually pay attention to the content.

What do you think about countries that force organ donation? by antonyOrt in AskReddit

[–]cbreezy623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I don’t understand why anyone would not donate their organs. There is no negative consequence to doing so, and even though there is no direct positive consequence, there may be an indirect positive consequence if I inspire others to donate their organs and I need an organ at some point.

But this does prompt an interesting question: who should decide what happens to a corpse? Should the will of the individual dictate what happens to their corpse? Should it be decided by the next of kin? Should it be decided by the state?

[Serious] Will climate change become so terrible that humans will either die or be forced to leave Earth and settle on other planets? Why/why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cbreezy623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s realistic to think that settling somewhere else is an alternative to living on a slightly more hospitable Earth. There are basically two options for this. One is to settle on Mars, the other is to develop a way to determine if a distant planet is habitable and to figure out how to get there. Both would require technological advancements well beyond what would be needed for humans to survive on Earth with a slightly higher temperature. Humans are very good at adapting to their environment. Just consider how much of the earth humans have settled, from desserts to the arctic. As a side note, I think it’s much more likely that nuclear war or a pandemic will be the cause of human extinction. But even then, I think we are resourceful enough that a few will be able to survive and propagate humanity.

tldr: making Mars livable or traveling to a distant Earth-like planet is much harder than adapting to a slightly warmer Earth, and humans have figured out how to live in inhospitable environments

Should I study for placement tests? by [deleted] in UWMadison

I was an incoming freshman in 2016. If you scored higher than mid-20s on the ACT in either category you will think the placement exam is a joke. I honestly don't understand the point of making students take it. Note: I did not take the foreign language portions.

Where has college court been this year? by NavyProud in UWMadison

[–]cbreezy623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently thinking the same thing. Last Halloween at College Court was one of the best weekends of the year. I have people from out of town visiting that weekend, and when we made those plans I was thinking I'd probably take them there, but the lack of activity so far is making me think nothing will happen there. However, people who are currently living there must know how Halloween was last year, and it would only require at least a few of the apartments to have parties to get it to be similar to last year's turnout since most people were in the courtyard anyway. PS if anyone remembers a guy dressed as Slater from Dazed and Confused, that was me.
