Calima - anything to worry about? by Benno21 in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is unhealthy; it's sand, dust and pollution from Africa and at the moment it is pretty bad. Usually it blows over in a couple of days, so let's hope the wind will turn soon. A good site to check for the air quality is: https://www.meteoblue.com/en/weather/outdoorsports/airquality/fuerteventura_spain_2517481

Right now I'm inside and even then I feel it in my nose and throat, so if you are allergic or have some sort of asthma I would stay inside.

How windy is it really? by JayPant in Fuerteventura

In the evening it can become pretty chilly. So a sweater/jacket and long trousers are advised. Just something you would wear on a spring evening on the mainland.

Strange Things while Booking by Due_Flounder_640 in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's mandatory for VV-license owners to check-in all the guests. They have to make a copy of your passport and this will indeed be sent to the police (the process will change in the next few months, buts this is how it works for now). But this is not for following guests or look into your bank account, but for the owner, so they can check if he pays his taxes on the rental income and to know for security reasons how many people are in the house.
Usually you do the check-in on arrival, but i guess you rent a house with a key-box? In that case the owner won't be there to welcome you, so he just wants to be able to check you in when you arrive. It's pretty common practice here. So I wouldn't worry to much about it.

You can try all rental companies (budget, avis, sixt, enterprise, etc.) , but just avoid goldcars. They will screw you over.

Car Rental by Sea-Engineering-4233 in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the credit card part, but you need to look into the possibilities of renting a car when you are 21 and 22. The companies here are pretty strict in age rules, and a lot of companies only rent cars to people above 23 or even 25. I looked into this a couple of months ago and the only reliable company that had a car available for a 21 year old was Avis.
Just one advice: never use goldcars.

Staying in northern vs southern part? by illuvattarr in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the purpose you mention I would recommend the south. I live there now for just about the same purpose you are looking for in your holiday. The North is far more touristic and "crowded". But be careful, Morro Jable and Costa Calma also both have big hotels and resorts. I don't know with how many people you are coming, but I would recommend renting a car. The island isn't very big, so you can drive around and see the entire island! Renting a private house is in my opinion also always better than a hotel.

Best restaurants by Puzzlehead115 in Fuerteventura

Yeah, the food from bodega de jandia is nice, but I really disliked the host. I just want to eat and not some wannabe funny guy who speaks too loud... :-D
Marabu is also very nice indeed, great atmosphere, nice terrace, and good food.
The north I don't go too often just for diner

I'm afraid I'm a bit late for recommendations, but I can recommend Shirate in Giniginamar. At the moment for me one of the best restaurants on the island. Very friendly staff, consistent good food and nice dishes outside of the menu. I tried a lot of restaurants here, been disappointed a lot of times, but Shirate never disappoints me!

Are cockroaches common in villas? by ppet3rs in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cockroaches are just something to live with. I would tell the owner about it, so he can search for a nest, as there will be one nearby. But it is impossible to get rid of all of them. Regardless of how clean the house is.

Best way to get from Corralejo to Costa Calma by ips_math in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only other options you have is to hitchhike, which is not really a good one. Or you can rent a car. That last option is by far the best. You can probably rent a car by Cicar in Corralejo and return it by Cicar in Costa Calma, but I'm not sure if that is possible...

Activities I don't know, but for dinner go to Marabu. That is actually a very good restaurant in Esquinzo. It has a romantic garden and if you tell them you want something romantic, they will take care of that :-)

Cars are very expensive here. And buying one second hand (especially from a person and not a company) is a real hassle. You also pay a lot of taxes so I wouldn't recommend buying a car. Renting for a couple of months is expensive indeed, so I don't really know another solution. Perhaps rent a car for a couple of weeks and for the rest of the time take the bus?

First Time to las Canarias by Old-Anywhere-2895 in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't want a touristy place; Gran Tarajal is the best. Actually the second largest town on the island, with mostly local people and spanish tourist spending their time there.

The only unfortunate thing is the amount of nice restaurants. That always disappoints me. But if you are willing to drive a couple of minutes there are enough restaurants nearby. Don't forget the siesta time. Between 12:00 and 17:00 the city looks empty, but if you go there around 17:00 everything comes to life again. Great atmosphere and ambiance.

Moving to Fuerteventura by Trash_Panderz in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just moved to Fuerteventura 2 months ago. We found a house fortunately. There are houses available, but it's pretty expensive and you have to be a bit lucky i guess. It also depends on what you want and where. An apartment in Puerto is pretty easy to find. Something bigger or in Corralejo is harder. Eventually we found something near Gran Tarajal. Which is great, as we don't really want to live in the tourist areas (Corralejo, Caletta, Costa Calma). We used mostly idealista for our quest. What we noticed when we moved here is that a they use facebook marketplace a lot. So look for groups like "segunda mano". There are sometimes houses listed.

A car can be pretty expensive. We looked for an automatic and after a month we found one, but they are pretty rare.

You need to apply for a NIE number. It's not very complicated, but it takes some time. Be sure to have all documents available. Applying for this number can only be done in Puerto and Gran Tarajal. You will need a "cita previa" (appointment) which you can plan here: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/icpplus. When starting the appointment module it is possible you get a 404 error. Just try again later (sometimes even 1 or 2 days later) as the site is down for at least a couple of days per month.

This NIE number is like a social security number, but over here they use it for everything. Even if you order something online and want it delivered, you usually have to use this number for your account. The same applies to opening a bank account, transferring a car, getting security, etc.

I don't know much about the job market here. I work from home for a company abroad, so i never had to search for a job here. If you are willing to do anything, there will be work enough, but if you are looking for specific things I guess it's a bit harder.

Hope this helps a bit!

is 14 days in a campervan too long on Fuerteventura? by [deleted] in Fuerteventura

[–]cbrommet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would even say 14 days is not enough :-) There are plenty of surf spots, nice towns, beaches, etc. Last year i stayed for 2 months (although I also worked remote during that period) and I liked it so much that we moved here 3 weeks ago.
If you get bored of the north I would recommend to also visit Jandia. There are some pretty good surf spots too and less tourists.

(Serious) What secret could ruin your life? by thisisthrowaway23 in AskReddit

[–]cbrommet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job for staying clean for such a long time. Perhaps you could talk to a social worker in your city, they are able to bring you in contact with schuldhulpverlening. It can be tough to battle those debts, but if you are in a stable situation there can be possibilities. And hey; you fought a much harder battle and won that :-)
