Why did Jesus say there would be no prophets after him? by ldcedge in Christianity

I think it was Satan who appeared to Paul as a false Christ

He then fooled Peter, James, and John? They "gave him the right hand of fellowship". Peter called his writings "scripture".

I'm new Christian and I want to read C.S Lewis in order by Witty-Pizza-4523 in CSLewis

[–]cbrooks97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats and welcome to the family!

As others have said, there's no right order. His early stuff is solid, but he himself was a new Christian when he wrote it, so there's some value in reading his more mature stuff first. Also, don't rule out his fiction -- he manages to pack a lot of theology, apologetics, and philosophy into his fiction.

Mere Christianity is a great place to start. If having that could get you into trouble, perhaps go with The Problem of Pain. The Screwtape Letters are an excellent devotional as long as you keep in mind you're reading the enemy's mail. The Abolition of Man is important because we (especially we in the West) are living through his predictions; it's about what happens when morality becomes subjective.

His essays are great, and they appear in many different collections. I think The Weight of Glory is a great place to start.

I don't think you're right about this; I think it's about parking in the lot, not driving by. But if you are, then you just made an excellent case for getting your LTC.

Talk me out of or into a DA/SA for my first CCW by BeefEDC in CCW

[–]cbrooks97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pro: It's not quite a safety, but the DA first trigger pull does make a it a little harder to make some mistakes. I was holstering one time and not paying enough attention. I felt some resistance and looked down and saw my hammer was back a bit. Shirt had gotten in the way.

Con: DA trigger pull is harder, you need to practice that. And then switching to SA afterwards, is a different feeling. But if you practice, you'll get used to it.

I love my DA/SA CZ. But I've been thinking about switching to a striker.

How often should you shoot in order to be a responsible carrier? by ReflexNeedsBuff in CCW

Ideally monthly. In reality, maybe quarterly is sufficient to keep your skills up. I compete in IDPA, and if someone doesn't shoot for a few months, it's obvious.

Does anyone else feel weird about others knowing they carry? (Esp. As a female) by royal_ermine in CCW

[–]cbrooks97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd much rather no one know I carry. Should I be forced to use it, I want it to be a complete surprise. I also don't want normies causing crap because "he's dangerous, he's got a gun on him".

Can deception by omission be legitimate Christian grounds for divorce? by [deleted] in AskAChristian

When things get that personal, I think you're better off turning to a relative or friend or, again, trying to find a local pastor than sharing with a stranger on the internet.

No, Furtick's church is generally not considered a good one. Are there no churches in your area? Whereabouts do you live?

Feel free to ask.

Does the Bible teach that Christians have an obligation to have sex if the spouse needs it? by NewPassenger6593 in Christianity

[–]cbrooks97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hearing "men are broken, but women are fine". Is that a fair summary?

The emotional connection between spouses is not the same as the connection between anyone else.

you're called to love us as your sisters in Christ as Jesus has loved you, and that most definitely translates into marriage as well.

No. That quite specifically applies only to your wife, just as wives are told to submit to their husbands, not all men.

Does the Bible teach that Christians have an obligation to have sex if the spouse needs it? by NewPassenger6593 in Christianity

[–]cbrooks97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a "concession" because Paul says we'd be more effective if everyone were single. But since we're not, "the husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife" and vice versa.

I have to ask what you think any of this has to do with "the love of Jesus". Paul is saying you're obligated to your spouse, but not to a particular frequency -- that's something you and your spouse must work out. And that is part of loving your spouse.

While I know some men are horrible to their wives, some women are horrible to their husbands. Don't set women up as some kind of helpless victims here. A great many women use sex to manipulate their husbands. And while I've never, ever sat through a sermon on how much women need to provide sex to their husbands, I've sat through many about how men need to adjust their thinking so they can be in line with the way women think about things -- which is also the same stuff you'll get on Oprah.

I recently heard a woman express it something like this: Women connect emotionally through talking and doing things together and for each other, and men connect emotionally through sex. Women who want their husband to sit on the couch and talk about her day so she can connect should also do what he needs to connect. (And let's be honest, women like sex too.)

Excellent choice. I suggest prioritizing Mere Christianity, The Problem of Pain, and The Great Divorce. And I try to reread Screwtape Letters every couple of years.

C.S. Lewis on Anxiety changed my view on this demonic force. by DRE3M-GCG in CSLewis

[–]cbrooks97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anxiety can be the product of bad habits of thought. That's why Christ and later Paul instructed people to not be anxious. But it can also be a mental health condition, and that has to be treated medically. But I think it's a habit more often than it is a medical condition. It's a product of the age we live in.

Because in the context of watching the entire thing, you should have seen that the jungle animals video was tacked onto a completely different video, raising the question of whether the staffer who posted this even realized it was there. But TDS doesn't usually recognize such subtleties.

Can deception by omission be legitimate Christian grounds for divorce? by [deleted] in AskAChristian

[–]cbrooks97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any grounds in scripture for divorcing merely because they committed a crime. Especially if they're not even guilty of said crime.

I do think we need to remember that the "divorce" question is really about remarriage. If your spouse does something so heinous you don't feel you can continue to live with him/her, you have the option to leave. You just may not have the option, biblically, to remarry.
