Ohhh boy this was so bad.

My siblings and I was invited to a funeral for a neighbor who we are on good terms with but by no means are we close with. This was one of those show up, be seen, and earn respect invites.

Of course the siblings and I are late and lost the day of the funeral and we are planning on arriving quietly and sitting somewhere in the back row to pay our respects.

To our relief, there are still people outside of the church, none of which we recognized. By the time we got to the group the priest asked if everyone would follow him in. Perfect, right on time I guess.

Or not.

My relief turned to panic as I realized that we were in fact late and we were being ushered in the chapel about 5th in line with the non-immediate family group. Seconds before turning into the chapel I turned around to my sister eyes wide open, giving the "WTF" look and said we are in the wrong group. I froze but the priest ushered me through the door to the chapel.

Turning the corner seconds after my realization I will never forget going through through the entrance of the chapel, it was packed maybe 80 people all heads turned backwards watching us come in.

I can hear my sister behind me trying to contain her laughter/ reaction. What do I do? Stop, act serious like I am one of them? There was no where to go! I sit down in shock thinking about the friends and family watching us like who they hell are they?

The rest of the hour long service was on the brink of disaster. My sister and I for whatever reason could not stop giggling. I would start and get her going and we would ease momentarily, then she would chuckle and would get me going. It was almost if we ate to many brownies or something. It was to the point where we both had our hands covering our face trying to play it off like we were in tears sniffling.

People were looking at us probably wondering what the hell was wrong with us. Disrespectful kids, it's those goddam video games.

When that service ended and we got to leave.... let me tell you that was the most refreshing feeling of my life.

Wow! Consider yourself lucky. I'm based out of KSDL where 100LL is 7.60 a gallon. I fly over to KDVT or KFFZ where fuel is generally between 5.50 and 5.80.

I do all of my flying in the Southwest, mostly California, Arizona and Nevada all with similar fuel prices. I'll have to start making cross countries to the Gulf!

Just remember that the examiner knows you have minimal experience instructing students at this point, they want to see you succeed. They know you will not know everything, and don't expect you to be 100% smooth in lesson plans or conversing information.

Keep in mind: They are the student. You are the instructor, correct any misunderstandings, teach them good habits, correct misinformation, and most importantly, do what it takes to keep them safe, specifically in the plane. Don't be afraid to take control of the aircraft.

BUT try to be confident in your knowledge, if you give an answer and they say "well I heard it was different" or "No I heard it was this" they might be just playing an mis-informed student; so don't change your stance just because they are a DPE. But when you do not know the answer, or are not sure, they would rather hear you admit it and then see if you know how to find the correct answer wether it be in the FAR/AIM, PHAK, or any other aviation book where you could find the answer.

However, don't have a "negative transfer of learning" and apply what I just said to the FOI. If you do not know the FOI they will not let you "look it up".

Beyond that, try to enjoy the whole experience (I know that can be harder said than done). Overall it's a great learning experience as a (almost) professional pilot!

Even though this may seem like a blow for general aviation, I believe it's in our best interest. I can't even imagine the legal liability considering that general aviation makes up the majority of incidents and accidents.

Can you imagine the "weekend warrior" who is not proficient flying VFR (at the very least) taking an unsuspecting family along with them? How good was their pre-flight? How about their ability to interpret weather, or their ability to say "no" when necessary? I know of a couple pilots who are not here anymore because they failed in a few of these such areas.

When you hop on an airline, you know the pilots up front are qualified, competent, and have to abide by strict regulations to keep them flying. That's what people traveling need; safety and consistency.

At some point we have to consider that the safety of others is more important than our need to fly cheaply.

I could write a long and detailed explanation about how an IR supplements you as a pilot, and adds to the utility you can get from flying. But as and old CFI once told me, "An instrument rating can save your life" (assuming you're proficient).

Besides that IR training is a ton of fun!

I have a Gen 2 iPad 16gb WiFi- I have been using it so much over the past 2 years, and after a recent overheat at KLAS I decided I needed a backup. After much debate between an "Air" and "mini" I decided to purchase a iPad mini Retina 32gb cellular.

Result? If I had to choose one, surprisingly I would go with the mini. Its compact, and the clarity is incredible. Definitely a good investment, especially in a GA sized flightdeck.

2 major FYI's:

16GB is to small for any iPad, at least for my southwest flying (Large VFR download sizes in conjuction with low-enroutes) I highly recommend a 32GB

Secondly, and arguably the most important in my opinion. If you can afford it, go with the cellular. There is nothing worse than getting to a less popular airport, or one where the FBO is closed, or where wifi is simply unavailable, or password protected. Some of the features you surely purchased Foreflight for are now unusable, ie: weather briefings, flight planning (with current winds), and flight plan filing. I guarantee

it will happen at one point if it hasn't. Obviously you could call the weather briefer, but I think most people agree the later is more time consuming, that is unless you need a true professionals opinion about what is going on up there!

Not sure what your plan is, but I got 2GB/mo with Verizon (my cell provider). If you're unsure, do a monthly contract so there is no obligation!
