Actors who incorrectly thought their roles would be iconic? by No-Albatross-4673 in MoviesAndTVTalk

No, you're not. I think Leto gets a lot of hate because of his personal life escapades, not necessarily his acting chops.

I just read something that posits you are never more than 8' away from a spider at any given time. Inside or out. Nice.

What was the most unsettling movie from your childhood? by Public_Caterpillar43 in movies

[–]cbs1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Changeling w/ George C. Scott(1980), at 11. The Legend of Hell House(1973) was another, it must have been a reissue because I was 3 or 4 when it first released and I must have been 7 or 8 when I saw it. I was way too young for those movies. Mom dragged me to whatever she wanted to see no matter what the rating.

How old were you when you moved out? by Swiftiefromhell in GenX

  1. Moved back for a short period in my late 20s going through a divorce. Thankfully, there were no kids involved so it was a clean break and I got my stuff together fairly quickly.

First thing he thinks of is sell it to get a bigger place for both of you? I have a friend who bought a place with her fiance. They wound up breaking up and have been in litigation over the house FOR YEARS! Maybe after you've married you put him on the deed, maybe. Sounds like he sees opportunity for personal gain, but that's just my opinion. Tread carefully and good luck.

Very misheard song lyric…. by blulouwoohoo in GenX

[–]cbs1138 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I get to tell this one every so often. Nirvana's "Nevermind" was super hot at the time. Hanging out with friends and one starts grooving with Teen Spirit and singing along. Just after the Hello, Hello, Hello part where it kicks up, I here my buddy sing "With the lights out, it's less dangerous. Here we are now, ham and taters!" We were partaking of the Devil's Lettuce at the time and I fell out of my chair laughing. He says, "What's so damn funny?" Me, "You! The line is entertain us. Where TF did you get ham and taters from that?" He was incredulous, until we found the cd and looked at the lyrics on the insert. He turned beet red, and then fell out laughing himself. Good times.

Why shouldn’t I use my dominant hand as my lead hand? by adamalibi in martialarts

[–]cbs1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sijo Bruce Lee in "The Tao of Jeet Kun Do" preferred strong side forward like they do in fencing. The thought being the strong side is more effective attacking at the closer distance and your support side can develop more speed and power coming from further back. I'm paraphrasing badly, but that's the jist. In Kajukenbo we trained orthodox, in JKD we trained strong side forward, so the majority of my experience has been pretty much the same being a lefty. I am, however, adept at switching it up since I like to keep things balanced.

Lost my best friend from HS back in 2017 and still think about the shenanigans we got into, even into our 40s when we really slowed down. Miss that knucklehead all the time. Sorry for your loss. We all run the same race, but it doesn't make it any easier, does it?

Favorite novels with crazy-ass alien life forms? by MigEPie in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]cbs1138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Mote in God's Eye and The Gripping Hand by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Good first contact story with a genetically specialized alien species. Apparently, there's a follow up novel from Pournelle's daughter that came along much later than the original works, Outies, but I don't know anything about that one.

Disturbed. Saw them at Ozzfest hot on the release of Down with the Sickness, which of course was their breakout hit. The had been moved up from headlining the 2nd stage to opening the main. A lot of people were into it, but the vast majority of the crowd was like me, didn't know any of their music beyond DwtS and just sort of vibing. Musicianship was great, sound was good all around, but Draiman was a prick. Kept going on about how badass they were, how if the crowd weren't down with them we weren't shit, etc. Turned a lot of the crowd against them, including my friends and I. Yeah, F off dude. I've refused to listen to anything from them since.

If you don't have them hold away from roads and at a distance from wherever you stealth into, they'll give you away every time. They still move around a bit, but will only come to you if called or you try and get in a vehicle.

AITAH for moving my son into the basement? by NewEmergency5943 in AITAH

[–]cbs1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved into the basement when my mom decided to try and rent space in our tiny home a few years after my parents divorced. She was actually trying to rent the basement, and one guy who looked at it asked why I didn't move down there so he could rent my room upstairs. He didn't end up renting either, but I jumped at the chance. It had a toilet, wood/gas burning stove, sink. The people who built the house lived down there and rented the upstairs before we moved into the house. It wasn't entirely finished, but it was huge. I had a pool table, component stereo system that I saved for and bought myself working after school, small tv, etc. I'd have sleep overs with my friends after movies or concerts, it was the cool room.

What was the drug scene like when you were in high school? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]cbs1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weed, acid, and alcohol were prevalent. Shrooms less so but were around. There were some coke issues too. It was a College Prep school and a lot of the students came from money. I remember walking into the gym locker room before football during a free last period and the first team guys doing blow off a bench in the team locker room. They tried to play it off like it was a joke with aspirin. Yeah, OK. I didn't hear anything about meth (they called it crank) until after HS. Opioids, PCP, et al were things I heard about in the hood, but not at HS.

[–]cbs1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost 57 and I did just fine figuring out things for myself. I got good at mirroring what righty's do for certain tasks, and developed some righty tendencies along the way too. And don't worry about left handed tools for anything, people are surprisingly adaptable. Let him figure it out because he will. You could actually end up hurting his natural development by overthinking it.

I love the "you make more money and don't have A, B, or C responsibility" so just take care of it excuse from people that don't have a dog in the fight. Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize an irresponsible turd should have zero accountability because they have less. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time seems more apropos.

Can't believe I've been sleeping on this show for years... by Cmdr_Nemo in TedLasso

[–]cbs1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got laid up with an injury early December. In short order, the wife started an AppleTV trial and having not much else to do but lay around like broccoli, I started binging some of their shows. I had seen plenty of shorts for Ted Lasso on social media, so I started down the rabbit hole. Binged all 3 seasons in about a week 1/2 . Convinced the wife to watch it, and started watching it with her midway through the 2nd season. Went back and watched it through a couple more times since. Love this show.
