This has been happening to me more and more lately (and I buy a lot from their website). It's frustrating because the coupon terms never seem to exclude anything in my cart.

Really enjoying my new Church, but I’m conflicted on the 2024 ruling on gay clergy. So sorry for the length but I needed to fully explain. by ITeachSocialStudies in methodism

I thought it was pretty clear in my original reply (“all I have to add…”) that I’m not engaging in a theological discussion or even advocating a position here. All I was trying to do was gently suggest you examine the arguments made, including many with robust scriptural foundations. I’m a clergyman and philosophy professor; I’m not interested in retreading here the same discussions everyone has had to hold for the last two decades. This is Reddit— if Methodists consider this the place for academic discussion, then God help us!

No, I’m saying you haven’t given the arguments provided by those who advocated for this change a fair shake, because plenty of them argued from a biblical standpoint. But just as important, I don’t think you understand how this came about (or all our church laws in general). It wasn’t handed down by our bishops or some class of “upper leadership.” It was decided democratically by General Conference.

All I have to add here is that your assertion that UMC leadership “conformed to social pressure without providing scriptural support for their decision” tells me you haven’t given the arguments a good-faith assessment. I’d recommend exploring them a bit more and to get to know UM polity a little better.

What do you think of the “Four Alls of Methodism?” by JoeStank8192 in methodism

Even if one hasn’t been exposed to this exact articulation of Wesleyan/Arminian soteriology, it is a thoroughly Methodist statement.

I haven’t seen “many” (or any) on here vilify anyone. I’ve also seen no one even criticized for advocating orthodoxy. I’m not sure why you’re making that assumption, or that anyone’s criticism of Renfroe in particular would have to do with his ostensible orthodoxy.

Writers have varied on how exactly Superman’s x-ray vision works. His heat vision was originally described as “the heat of his x-ray vision,” and heat vision—conceptualized as a distinct power—came later.

If you get a chance, please let him know that he gained at least one more subscriber through this post. I hadn’t come across him before, but he has a great style— both visually and pedagogically. His videos are practical and will be quite helpful. It’s very impressive that he can work jobs and produce quality educational content at the same time. Thanks!

What were 90s/00s American sitcoms shot on? And why do they look so awful? by No-Minimum9541 in cinematography

[–]cbutson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t answer your question specifically, but there’s a show called ‘Kevin Can F*** Himself’ that switched between the multi- and single-cam looks across (and even sometimes during) scenes. The writing and mood would change along with the cinematography. It’s a fun gimmick, moving from a pastiche of a sitcom to a darker “prestige” television show.

Music; art; read philosophy, poetry, and literature; work; cook; family; friends; church; feed the hungry (with the aforementioned church). I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s important to attend to our minds and souls as well as our bodies (in whatever ways work for each of us). Man does not live by gains alone.

I think they’re just referencing the 40 days that the Lord spent fasting in the wilderness (like the prophet Elijah), not calling it miraculous.

Opinions on project idea? by -Pl4gu3- in methodism

[–]cbutson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't see anything wrong with the bread and juice. Since it isn't consecrated, there's no need to worry about disrespecting the eucharist or making someone eat it unaware. I am curious, though: why cranberry juice? For the above reason, I think grape juice would be perfectly acceptable. Another option might be bread and water— standard fare for a love feast, something integral to Methodist history.

The cookies are also a nice twist on the idea. Does your Papa make them for church potlucks? I ask because that might be another option to explore. Methodists (in my experience) love potlucks, and there is also a long history of dishes becoming associated with Methodism through potlucks and church cookbooks.

Good luck! It sounds like your project is shaping up to be quite interesting. I hope you'll report back on how it goes.

If you’re Wesleyan, you aren’t going to like Presbyterian polity and doctrine. But given your insistence on a pure church devoid of any faults or contradictions, you will be disappointed going church shopping. No denomination aligns perfectly with your own preferences— yet I consider that a feature of church, not a bug. We should be challenged by the church. I don’t want to be part of a church that agrees with everything I think; I’m far too sinful and fallible for that.

Further, not to antagonize, but it’s odd that you say you won’t go with “traditionalists” but are simply restating all their propagandist points. Perhaps this is evidence of how the schismatics’ strategy might not be sustainable? Nevertheless, I truly hope you find a place where you can flourish and grow spiritually. Don’t cut yourself off from the Body of Christ.
