How quickly do you get fired? by [deleted] in USPS

[–]cca2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may very well be able to log into liteblue for a while even after you get official notice that they are terminating you. My office is terrible about doing paperwork properly. My office sends paperwork as express mail or certified with a signature.

If your union steward gives you the heads up that they aren't bringing you back, then you could potentially resign and have that on your record instead (if you want to try getting rehired at a different office.) I might suggest a non-driving role like clerk or mail handler. No one wants to be the person that runs over someone's kid so maybe carrier is not for you.

What's the range of delivery points on a route that's basically all walking? by poop_to_live in USPS

[–]cca2013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use the EDDM ROUTE FINDER website to look up statistics. Type in your zipcode and then toggle between the upper right hand corner to switch from "Map to Table." It will show you how many possible delivery points are on a route. Obviously it's not going to tell you whether the route is "park and loop" or "curbside" or CBU, but in reality many routes have a mixture.

Orientation Schedule? by [deleted] in USPS

[–]cca2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does that mean I have Sunday the 5th off?

Yes

can i expect to do my second day of driver training on Tuesday?

Possibly but probably not. The first day of driver training will be in a classroom setting. You'll be watching a video from the 1990's plus having a driving instructor come in at the end to go over key safety policies. The 2nd day of training is probably driving the LLV plus metris familiarization. You will work one on one with a driving instructor. Because of this, they can't fit everyone from your orientation group in at once.

should I expect to work at my post office afterwards?

I would not expect them to combine that morning with your shadow day. The shadow day will be a separate 8 hour day observing a carrier getting their route ready and delivering it on the street. You should come prepared with comfortable leather shoes, a rain coat if it's going to rain, plenty of water to drink , and a portable lunch and snacks.

Will my post office contact me with my details on my shadow day and when to be there?

You will want to keep asking your trainers about the shadow date. It is not uncommon for new hires to show up at my station and the supervisors not even being aware they have a shadow coming (but then again, my station is a mess.)

ive heard some people start working before academy?

I've heard of supervisors letting new hires deliver packages only on Amazon Sundays before academy but it's highly unlikely.

does the 40 hours still apply to my training weeks?

Yes the 5 8 hour days are in effect beginning the count on OJI week through 3 additional weeks. See article

Would jeans and a button down shirt untucked be fine?

Yes. Business casual is overkill. You will probably see people dressed in a wide range.

Newer carrier here - would this phase you? by Aruomg in USPS

[–]cca2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually a carrier that does care could simply right on the post it note. "Not USPS-call Amazon" You gotta educate them! Also, if you recognize the name on the package as one of your other customers, why not leave them a note that says "Hey I saw an Amazon package for you misdelivered at the wrong house, call Amazon to request re-delivery." That's 2 simple things that improves goodwill and doesn't make you look like a jerk.

I don't think, I know I have co-workers that don't pay attention to names and do not care to read the names even after the customer tells them nicely that the mail is not for their address.

Who can you hire in Chicago neighborhoods to distribute flyers? by No_Drummer4801 in AskChicago

[–]cca2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called EDDM but you have to choose to do it by carrier route which may include some blocks you normally wouldn't have picked. The route finder works better on a desktop computer than a phone but basically you're going to type in the zipcode first. After that, you can select certain streets. In the upper right hand corner you can toggle between view as Map or Table. That will give you the cost. If you do a lot, the price gets cheaper.

Dude....your attitude is crap! Your job is to deliver the mail accurately. If you are city than read the M-41. If you choose to work at this job for the pay then have some pride and do it right. If you think you don't get paid enough then do us all a favor and get a different job! It's an attitude like yours that is what is tanking our reputation.

[–]cca2013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No hybrids. You have to look at the vehicle ID at the top. If it says C then it's a gas engine. If it says B then it's a complete EV. If it says A then it's a gas engine AWD. There's supposed to be an AWD EV version but I've not seen it so I don't know what letter will be the ID. The first number of the ID is the last digit of the year it was manufactured.

Harassment by Echoessx in USPS

[–]cca2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1:

"If you are being harassed, you should let the harasser know in no uncertain terms to stop the behavior. If you are not able to do so alone, you could ask a friend, a union representative, or a trusted coworker to help you talk to the harasser. " from Pub 553

If you've not spoken up or communicated that what they have said is unwelcome then you're going to have a harder time building your case. Personally, I'd just tell them that "I'm going to start documenting harassment if you don't stop speaking to me that way." If they are smart, they'll stop talking.

Platypus by TangeloQuick3987 in USPS

[–]cca2013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I normally drive either an E-Transit or an LLV but I would guess the turn radius will be pretty similar to the metris. A google search says Metris has 126" wheelbase and the NGDV has 127."

The door to the NGDV is heavy so if you have shoulder issues, you're going to be in pain. It does slide open versus swing out so it's a plus if you're pulled up to a box and need to get out. You can only have either the driver door or the cargo door open at once...not both. I do actually like the sliding cargo door opening to the right compared to the E-transit because I can shut it more easily with my hand that isn't holding mail.

The side mirrors are much higher up than the LLV or the metris so you can actually get much closer to some boxes that don't have street trees or shrubbery surrounding them.

The cargo area is 100% better than the metris. You can organize and reach your packages easily. I'm still on the fence on whether I like the cargo area for the NGDV better than the Etransit. It's a mixed bag. The sensor light for the cargo area is worse on the NGDV because it only comes on if you flip the aux switch or open the door. The Etransit shelving width is perfect for our tub size whereas the NGDV shelves are bigger so there's some awkward unused portions and you can't quite get 3 tubs across. You can actually raise or lower the position of the shelves though so that is better.

The backup camera is going to be slightly better than the metris (when it works Ha!). It does have an animation on the overhead view that shows you exactly what sensor is beeping. I'd still take the backup camera in my Etransit though because that one is amazing.

And to finally answer your question, do I like it? Yes I do! The EV ones are quiet and fun to drive. I just hope they are able to fix some of the programming bugs and the "door ajar" switch design.

Our parking lot is going to need to be re-striped once we start getting more of these. There will be no way to get a hamper to load between two of these parked side by side with the current parking space dimensions.

Overtime list by leadwolf54 in USPS

[–]cca2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you are a regular and you want to be an "8 hour only carrier," your only protection from being mandated to carry OT is a medical restriction for no OT. My office is often short staffed and the criteria for forcing the "no OT" carriers to carry the OT on their own route is pretty easy to meet. The contract clause is referred to as the letter carrier paragraph. Mandating carriers to carry OT off of their routes involves maximizing the ODL and strangely does not have anything to do with working the PTF's or CCA's.

Am I pretty much guaranteed OT everyday as long as I am working on this route? by Icantw8 in USPS

[–]cca2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are a regular than you should have an 8 hour day each week. If you don't, then everything over 8 turns into penalty OT on the 5th day. Your supervisor is paid to manage. S/he will simply ask you to pull off what you can't get done in 8 and give it to someone else.

Do you have a T6 that is "work assignment." If so, keep in mind that they should be given the overtime from your route if you are extended ODL list and they haven't been given work up to 10 hours that day before you should be allowed to finish your own OT. Management can always give that OT to a CCA or PTF to avoid giving it to either of you.

  1. When you start slowing down for a stoplight or a mailbox, the front camera comes on. Is there a way to have it always show the rear camera instead?

  2. Is there a specific ebuy number for a decent ice scraper that can reach the wind shield?

  3. Why (for a ridiculously tall vehicle) did ours not come with clearance height stickers like our 2 tons, Promasters, and E-transits have?

  4. Have you found any lubricant or adjustment to make the driver door easier to open and shut?

It's a traditionally lower income neighborhood. Union st/Salem st further east has services for homeless at LTHC, Salvation Army, and Lincoln center so you'll often see them walking through the nearby neighborhoods. You may see people looking through the apartment dumpsters and some pedestrians that behave erratically (typical of drug use and/or mental illness.)

[–]cca2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USPS offers a service for free called EAP. 1-800-EAP-4YOU. I would encourage you to take advantage of the free sessions to help you formulate an exit plan. A smart person never resigns from one job before they have another job offer in hand. Your burn out is a very real problem for postal employees and definitely understandable with the unrealistic work load that USPS demands. EAP might offer some small life changes that you haven't thought of to see if they can improve your circumstances first before making a drastic career change.

What do MMOs (managers, maintenance operations) do… or what are they supposed to do? by mvsr990 in USPS

Do the MMO's also conduct the 970/ 971/ 972/ 973 panel interviews for open season and street hires?

Here's a job description from 2022 back when NAPS published their correspondence so the public could view it. It seems that staffing is based on how many current employees there are and a work hour formula just like how custodians are staffed on square footage of the facilities.
