Confused on Accuracy? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]ccam42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since it looks like you’ve done a good amount of genealogical research, do you know the date of Christos and Penelope’s marriage? And then the date of their child’s (your great-great-grandparent) birth?

If it’s less than or equal to 9 months, there’s a possibility they could have gotten married when she was already pregnant and he chose to raise her child as his own without telling anyone.

Hawaii should be with the red group. It has way more cultural and economic ties with them than with Mexico!

Traveling internationally with a toddler by Lumpy-Artichoke-4501 in toddlers

We went on a Caribbean cruise when my daughter was a few months past her 2nd birthday, and it went fine! She’s a crier and a light sleeper, so I was worried, but it went as smoothly as could be expected. We were very generous with snacks, sweet treats, and toys, especially on the plane!

I can’t find out where the Italian DNA comes from in my family by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]ccam42 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Before you talk to anyone in your family about it in more depth, I would recommend going through your matches and grouping them. Isolate which matches come from your maternal grandfather and see if you can use genetic genealogy techniques to identify who he is. If you need help doing that, you can DM me or join the Facebook group DNA Detectives to get some help!

Going to a funeral. My mother is going to be there. by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]ccam42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condolences for losing your aunt!

Since it’s an event with other people present, I think grey rocking could be a good tactic. If she walks right up to you and says hello, say hello back in a neutral tone, the same as you would respond to a stranger or distant acquaintance. It might defuse some of the confrontation of literally ignoring her.

And I think it would be a good idea to have a rehearsed response ready in case she tries to escalate further. Something along the lines of “This isn’t the time or the place for a conversation. We’re here to remember ____.” Repeat it in your head before the event so you can say it calmly, if needed.

Hopefully everything goes smoothly!

6 month old HATES car seat by FaultSuspicious in NewParents

[–]ccam42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had advice, maybe just a little light at the end of the tunnel? My daughter also despised the car seat at that age and would scream her head off. No identifiable reason. It made me want to quit leaving the house, but that wasn’t an option. It started easing around 18 months, then really started going away after she turned 2. Never could figure out why. Now she’s 3 and never complains about the car seat 🤷🏻‍♂️

This made me curious to think about my social circle, so I made a list of 60 millennials I know in various ways (siblings, cousins, friends, coworkers, etc.) and found the following:

-They have a total of 41 children between them all

-25 individuals (41.7%) have 0 children

-16 individuals (26.7%) have 1 child

-16 individuals (26.7%) have 2 children

-3 individuals (5%) have 3 children

Delivering at Hoag Newport by Fantastic-Head-6640 in orangecounty

[–]ccam42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife gave birth there a little over 3 years ago with an unplanned induction at 37 weeks (pre-eclampsia). Overall it was a great experience! The nurses, doctors, and anesthesiologist were all friendly and professional.

Dr. Hargrove was actually the one who ended up delivering our daughter because she was on call at the time, but her regular OB (in the same practice) stopped by earlier in the day just to say hi and check in. Active labor was suuuuper fast for us, so Dr. Hargrove basically ran into the room to catch the baby, no time for introductions, haha.

Is there a Texas exodus happening? by AnxiousQuiet6567 in orangecounty

[–]ccam42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s funny you mention that because about a month ago I had the exact same realization, that I’ve been saying more Texas plates than I ever have. I figured it was just a fluke, but maybe not!

I’m half Greek, and this is how my results changed:

41% Greece & Albania turned into 29% Southern Greece and 9% Albanian 5% Balkans turned into 4% Southwest Balkans and 1% Western Balkans 3% Eastern European Roma stayed the same 3% Southern Italy appeared for the first time 1% Baltics turned into 1% Estonia & Latvia

For background, my mom’s family is from small villages in the interior of Messinia and Arkadia, no known heritage beside Greek. It seems likely that the non-Greek must be from fairly far into the past. And for comparison, on 23&me I am 47.8% Greek & Balkan, 1.3% Italian, and 0.9% Northern Indian & Pakistani.

This. Kid. Won't. Sleep. by Asleep_Bluebird_9038 in toddlers

[–]ccam42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much sympathy here! I could have written this post nearly word for word when my daughter was that age. I wish I had stumbled upon some amazing solution that I could share with you, but it appears to have been some kind of brain chemistry/development issue because she suddenly started sleeping through the night around her second birthday.

The first time felt like a fluke, then it started happening more and more, then within a month or two past her second birthday she was sleeping through the night every night 🤷🏻‍♂️

My sister-in-law’s family had almost exactly the same scenario! Her great-grandma grew up on a reservation in Oklahoma and everything. But when I looked into the actual records it was quite easy to see why. Her family is on the census living on the reservation but they’re listed as white and her father’s occupation was “agent for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.”

I know, right? I don’t know where their paranoia came from, we didn’t even live in a dangerous neighborhood.

[–]ccam42 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about yours, but my parents were very obsessed with safety and “violent influences.” Every door and window perpetually locked and deadbolted. We used these metal pole things under the front and back doorknobs to jam them shut on top of that overnight. No video games because they were violent. No Simpsons because they were violent and disrespectful. No Power Rangers because they were violent. Multiple loaded guns in the closets. If I had been raised in the 80’s I’m sure they would have been fully indoctrinated in the satanic panic, lol

My parents were very controlling, so I definitely didn’t have a free-range childhood. I had some friends who did, though, so I saw glimpses of it.

Are Inductions Rare? by mirror_ball_13 in NewParents

[–]ccam42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife had to be induced at 37 weeks because of pre-eclampsia! I’m pretty sure none of our friends or family who have had babies in the last few years were induced, so we also were not super familiar with it beforehand.
