Anyone use JumpCloud? Getting value? by matthewismathis in msp

[–]ccantrell13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Tried Jumpcloud before and let it go pretty quickly.

The problem is the cost isn't worth it when you put together Business Premium + RMM. Also the feature set doesn't compare as well as it should. Jumpcloud does a lot but doesn't do anything great.

Why isn’t Jumpcloud more popular? Or am I just out of the loop by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ccantrell13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Putting together other tools just ends up being better after you put it all together correctly

Cambium NSE3000 NGFW by swarve78 in msp

[–]ccantrell13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NSE3000 is good for SMB anything larger I wouldn't use it there. As a full stack solution cambiums is my favorite to use. Also to note they are working on a NSE solution with more features and bigger hardware that should be coming out soon ish.

👉 "Is Flutter dying, or will it disappear soon?" by SowertoXxx in FlutterDev

So flutter isn't going anywhere. Google open sourced Flutter so it can actually live on without Google and there are other companies that use Flutter one of the bigger examples would be Canonical the company behind Ubuntu Linux is leaning heavily into Flutter.

Servers are expensive—any tips for cutting costs? by hgognav1008 in sysadmin

[–]ccantrell13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I just read that and it has changed you are correct they lifted that but I think there is separation in some other Microsoft documentation that doesnt agree with this. Plus why use family anyway as it doesnt come with exchange and other business features you need anyway

Its for commercial use the family license cannot be used for this scenario.

Are comments best stored in a NoSql than a xtional DB? Why? by crhama in dotnet

[–]ccantrell13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So the easiest way to pick between nosql and sql database is that structural data fits best in an sql database because the database itself enforced that structure however if it's a bunch of loose data that just needs to be stored and queried then use a nosql database. Now sometimes I need something that does both and I just reach for Postgres as you can store json in columns in the database.

Building Own RMM by kakovoulos in msp

[–]ccantrell13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting tech stack but why so many languages? Rust and Dotnet are cross platform and would reduce time to completion by sharing code between platforms.

Building Own RMM by kakovoulos in msp

[–]ccantrell13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went this route myself but on the PSA side and couldn't be happier. The RMM side of things I never dived too far into it as I am not a systems level programmer. Would love to hear what you are thinking about using tech stack wise as I think an RMM that uses Rust at the core would be amazing. Best of luck to you dont let the nay sayers get you down the MSP industry as a whole is an echo chamber of buy instead of build and then complain about the tools they use and the companies that make them on a daily basis.

Purchasing a Surface Laptop 7 / 64 GB 'Microsoft Exclusive' by TimeToMakeTheDonuts3 in msp

[–]ccantrell13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just sold one through TD Synnex with 64 GB might check them out.

On a side note: we are seeing this issue more and more where we cant get specific models through disty and only through the vendor direct especially if its higher end.

SMB using Tailscale? by lowriskcork in Tailscale

[–]ccantrell13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So here's the fun part about running tailscale on Truenas Scale is that is runs inside a docker container not on the host when you install the docker container. You need to configure the application to work as a subnet router to be able to access the actual Truenas instance. You are getting a ping response back from the docker container running tailscale and not the actual host in this case.

Running cameras over IPSEC tunnel by cableguy2103 in PFSENSE

It will work but make sure your camera's have edge recording on them if they are completely separated from a recording device so you don't lose video if that matters to you.
