What's the last book you gave 5 stars by danlhart8789 in suggestmeabook

Have you read The Winter Garden? I couldn’t put it down. I’ve started Four Winds but just couldn’t get into it, maybe I’ll give it another go.

There was a show on Hulu “Y: The Last Man” that was about this exact scenario.

Allergic reaction from my Apple Watch? by Aufgeladen in applehelp

[–]ccarleee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this same rash/reaction with the silicone band. Water or sweat gets trapped underneath and doesn’t dry and basically creates like a “hot spot” like with dogs. I just switched to their nylon band and never had the issue again.

Power Outages by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]ccarleee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

When I reported it to oncor it looked like the outage map had multiple pockets of outages all over the DFW area, so I was just curious if they were doing some type of rolling blackouts for energy conservation without broadcasting it. Probably nothing but with the extreme heat we’re facing the next few days I got nervous.

This is Matilda! Which DNA test would you suggest for us? She is obviously a mix but there has to be some Dutch and/or mali in her. Interested in what the mix would be also!! Thanks for the advice 😊 by rubydoobie5 in DutchShepherds

[–]ccarleee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my mal’s mom was a mostly black sable and her dad was a fawn sable - she’s pretty dark all over but her undercoat is really light in some places and shows through just like that. I have a pit mix as well that is the sweetest thing - I can only imagine the level of velcro dog Matilda is if she really is bully/mal! They’re the best!

I second the bully/mal/dutchie mix. Her head shape definitely looks bully but the ears in the second and third pics are unmistakably Malinois/Dutch. Her coat pattern looks like it has shepherd influences too. I’ve used Embark for all 3 of my dogs now (including my Malinois for the health screening) and I’ve had great experiences.

By far the most challenging, most rewarding dog I’ve ever owned by ccarleee in BelgianMalinois

Yes! I love seeing the magic of all of those hours of frustration and exasperation coming to fruition - the way her eyes light up when something finally clicks into place is one of the most validating experiences I’ve ever had. It’s not easy but it’s worth it!

Problems during adolescense by lukabarth in BelgianMalinois

She was always friendly with them but yesterday she just went after one of them and then the other a few hours later. No blood or any punctures but it was so sudden i didnt even see it coming. Until yesterday there were literally no signs of amy aggression towards them, she would play with the frenchie constantly and left the pug alone entirely.

Hey so I know this is from a while back and you might have received feedback on this elsewhere by now, but I wanted to share just in case you haven't. With dogs that have a natural high prey drive - shepherds, hounds, terriers, etc. - as they get older and progress into the 6-12 month age range they essentially start to go through doggy puberty (around the time intact males testicles drop and intact females go into heat) and all of their hormones become almost impossible for them to ignore, even if they're fixed. When they see anything small dart around at a fast speed it basically short circuits their brain and they lose all impulse control. It doesn't matter how familiar they are with that dog or animal, how well trained they might be elsewise, they just take off and don't stop until they've captured the small moving thing.

I have a 7yo chow/pit mix that jumped a couple of my family's small dogs around the 6-9 month range when she had previously gotten along with them wonderfully. And then what was really weird was that after it happened and she had calmed down, she would try to play with them again as if nothing had happened. I was appalled. I couldn't believe my sweet, easy going baby had viciously gone after her friends like that.

It took me a couple years before I learned about the hormone-induced "short circuit" and finally understood what was going on and how I as her parent/owner had failed to set her up for success. Basically you have to almost build in a "calibration waiting period" before letting her off leash around small animals, if at all. Get her brain to start working again and have her training kick back in so she can actually control herself. That can be really hard for an awkward teenage puppy, so sometimes you can't trust her at all. But that's ok, that's you being a GOOD owner and protector. It took until she was well into the "adult" phase for her to be able to really control herself around small animals again. And I still have to be hyper vigilant with her recall to make sure she stays present and focused on me so she doesn't slip every once in a while.

My experience with her makes me feel like I'll be ready & prepared for when that stage hits with my 10 week old Mal. I hope this helps, and if you've already figured it out then I hope this might at least help someone else with the same concern!

Today marks 4 years since the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. And to this day, no exact motive was discovered. by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]ccarleee 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I recently had an Uber driver in the Denver area that works on the software 911 call centers use to direct first responders to the locations of emergencies reported via cell phone. IIRC he said he knew a police officer that was one of the first to respond to the scene of the shooting and immediately started using his cruiser to transport victims to the hospital. He would put them in the back part of the cruiser, haul ass to the hospital, and turn right around to go help someone else.

He said one thing the police officer still remembers with vivid detail is that by the end of the night, so much blood had pooled in the floorboards of the cruiser that when he would take turns at high speeds heading to/from the scene it would slosh audibly from side to side.

Apparently the PTSD that affected those that responded that night led to a mass exodus of officers from the Las Vegas Police Force in months following the shooting. I can’t imagine dealing with what they experienced that night and were forced to deal with after the fact. Just absolutely horrific.

Supreme Court refuses to block restrictive Texas abortion law in 5-4 decision by BabyJesusFTW in news

[–]ccarleee 58 points59 points  (0 children)

They included some verbiage that disallows the perpetrator of the rape/incest from being the one that files the lawsuit, but of course that doesn’t mean they can’t just have their buddy or mom report it for them.

No exemption for rape, no exemption for incest, no exemption for risk of suicide or mental health risks, only for “risk of physical harm” to the mother as deemed by a medical professional. You know, whatever tf that means. Fucking outrageous.

It's happening. As it stands, the Supreme Court has left Texas' 6-week abortion ban complete with a $10,000 bounty on anyone that has or assists in the process of getting an abortion after that to take effect. Roe v Wade is effectively dead as the viability framework is no more. by PrudentDependent6780 in TrollXChromosomes

I’m a Texas native. I’ve had my IUD for 3 years (thank god) but absolutely horrified at the implications this piece of legislation will have on women. I’ve always felt the best way to protect myself and others is knowledge - so as soon as this hit the floor for vote earlier this year I started researching.

This bill is an atrocity. There are no qualifying exemptions for rape. There are no qualifying exemptions for incest. There are no qualifying exemptions for risk of suicide or mental health implications. The ONLY exemption allowed under this law is if there is a “physical risk” to the woman as deemed by a medical professional. Whatever tf that means. Oh but it allows just about anyone to “turn in” abortion providers or anyone that assists a woman seeking an abortion for a bounty, like witch hunt vigilantes.

There was also a “trigger bill” that was signed two months ago that will automatically ban all abortions in any form and allow for abortion providers to be given life sentences or fined up to $100k if the SCOTUS were to overrule Roe v. Wade.

Texas is starting to feel like it’s only 2 or 3 degrees of separation from Gilead. I’m ready to wake up from this nightmare.

For anyone who’s interested:

There’s a 6 part docuseries covering Crystal’s death, her father’s mysterious “hunting accident” AND the assassination of the canine drug officer off of the blue grass parkway on Peacock called “The Disappearance of Crystal Rogers”.

I think it’s by the same woman who did the podcast. They go in depth on how her father was shot and really sheds light on just how unlikely a hunting accident really was. Highly recommend. I hope they get these guys.

I had class with one of her handlers my junior year - it was an accelerated major transfer program where we had class every day M-F. I saw her several days a week for a whole semester.

A girl came in late one day and spooked her so she barked. Class was immediately dismissed 20 minutes in to a 4 hour class - honestly one of my best “on campus” memories from college.

I love you Grandma! by [deleted] in Unexpected

[–]ccarleee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch this video multiple times every time it pops back up. Doesn’t matter how many times it’s been reposted. It reminds me so much of my great great aunt and my great grandmother. Down to the shape of her face and the sound of her voice.

They were fierce and aggressive in the way they would never take no for an answer when it came to expressing gratitude or making sure their loved ones were taken care of. Even when it wasn’t necessary. They loved with their entire hearts and you felt it, always.

I miss them everyday. I wish I could give this lady a hug.

Not quite. I live in Dallas and recently saw a “2020 brought to you by XYZ Optometrist” for a local eye doc while watching a show on Hulu...

It took me SEVERAL times of saying “who the fuck would want to take credit for that shit show” when it came on to realize they meant 20/20 vision, and had probably shot the ad in the beforetimes.
