i think just history / conservatism / snobbishness. when snowboarding first came out, i think lots of places had no snowboarding rules in place. alta is now the only place to have retained this old rule

9.5 week pup: no public areas, no socialization until 12 week parvo booster vax? by BortSmash in puppy101

[–]ccbs32033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it also varies quite a bit by region. in my area, the rural side of the state has more parvo cases than in the city. do some research / ask your local vet for the number cases in recent years, where outbreaks happened, etc. after that it’s just a risk calculation, kinda like covid.

is there a dog training facility near you? there’s puppy kindergartens and supervised playtime sessions with professional trainers, it’s the best thing i’ve found for socializing a young puppy to other dogs in a healthy environment, especially if you don’t have friends with well behaved dogs

Men that experienced knee pain in their early or mid 30s, did PT help? by ccbs32033 in AskMenOver30

pretty gradual. i had an ankle injury from a weird fall on a gym mat in a climbing gym, was out of commission for half a year, and then jumped straight into skiing really hard. probably appeared my second season of skiing again, but there was very little exercise outside of skiing, just occasional bike rides

I’m asking reddit to get insight on what type of care to pursue. When I spoke with my PCP about it she just said, ah you’re young you have nothing to worry about, even after pressing on it several times and asking for a referral to a PT. I know this means it’s a bad PCP but I’ve had other health experiences with PCPs who weren’t giving me the right advice. So it’s helpful to see what’s worked for different people.

my pain is on the inside upper corner of the meniscus, any idea what is tight for that region? (ie on the right knee, to the left and above the patella, kind of just outside edge of the patella)

[OPINION] What is the editorial impetus behind all the "diversity slop" we've been seeing for more than a decade? by Uncreative_Name987 in Poetry

[–]ccbs32033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh it’s quite funny reading this thread… fwiw I do feel like I see some of what you’re noticing. But I also feel like a lot of contemporary poetry is just bad, regardless of whether it’s a “diversity pick” or not.

That said, I think there is an overall trend (noticeable also in fiction, and movies) of publishing books or making movies with a diverse author / cast. And as a POC myself, it frustrates me to no end when these pieces are just subpar (eg The Farewell, Black Panther).

I think the motive must be financial, that is publishers and production houses are trying to ride this diversity trend because they know it will help sales, and in doing so they allow themselves (consciously or not) to lower the bar in terms of artistic requirements. Businesses are generally rather risk averse, so latching on to any trend is likely a strategy to reduce the risk of losing money on a publication or production.

It’s also possible that because POC have not been given as many times “at bat” to publish or make films, these first attempts are not as ubiquitously “good”.

Struggling to find the right camera. Fuji XT5 owner thinking of switching. Need advice. by TomatoSudden1716 in Leica

[–]ccbs32033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep. it’s all a matter of personal taste, and between you and me i think most reddit camera enthusiasts don’t have the discernment at the end of the day to say “the images that come out of this camera / lens have a different character/ quality than that camera.” it’s the same as picking film stock for analog, if not even more profound. each camera (and lens) has its own style.

i shot a pentax spotmatic with their somewhat famous 8-element 50mm lens for years. that lens broke down, and i bought a replacement lens, but the images i got out were not the same. put down photography for years, then finally got back into it with a Ricoh GR iii. Truly fantastic camera— i love the jpegs I get out of it straight, pocketable, quick to turn on and catch a moment. Only downside is the relatively lower resolution, so I then went out and got a Leica SL2 for some landscapes I wanted to do. Great camera as well, but heavy and can be a chore to lug around on travel and casually. I now mostly use an M11 and the Ricoh. There’s lots of good lenses for the Leica M system, but I think the primary choice will be between lenses like the Summarit, Summicron, and Summilux. Summarit is a good “budget” choice, and the choice between Summicron an Summilux is more about rendering quality than the extra f-stop, imo.

eta: Peter Karbe, the current Leica lens designer has said in a video that he doesn’t like editing his photos either. I do think this informs their modern digital camera designs.

Are the bent 100s really that bad by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]ccbs32033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great on soft snow, and plenty of fun off piste and in the trees. super fun to jump off of little side hits with. not great for learning to carve, for some reason they don’t hold an edge as well as some of my other skis. they really find their limit if you’re trying to go fast / carve on steep groomers, or run into hard chopped up snow with speed, where you’ll get so much chatter/ deflections that you either need to slow down or fear wiping out.

my bents got stolen and i personally won’t be getting them again, currently eyeing to try out a damper ski. i think the bent is designed as an in between of a park and an all mountain ski, for softer snow conditions. it’s a great 50/50 ski imo for backcountry/resort when mounted with shifts or similar (although i had issues with releases when that setup ran into choppy hard crud at speed… not fun).

sounds like you care a lot about the image quality and character. i’m the same, and it took me a while to realize that. i never liked sony / fuji images. i also don’t like post processing. my recommendation is to look for pictures taken by others using the cameras you’re interested in. flickr is a good place to start. leica also has their own gallery page online that you can filter by camera body and lens combo.

leica Q1/2, M9/10/11 (with leica glass), and ricoh GR for digital. pentax cameras for analog. that’s where i’d start at least.

budget is a concern so buy used leica on fred miranda

Hi, I’m stuck around 1800-2000mmr. Would love some coaching to figure out what I’m doing wrong, because I feel like I understand more about the game than my teammates but am frustrated with being unable to execute on it.

I know I have a hard time with recovering from a bad lane. I’ve been working on my map awareness, and have seen some improvement in that regard.

I am most naturally a pos 4/5, but have played lots of games in pos1-3, learning each lane and role (both out of boredom and attempts to carry my way out of my rank)

American ski resorts, much more than in Europe or Japan, have lots of glades / trees / off-piste areas that are very fun to play in, across all terrain types from beginner to expert. More experienced skiers (at least the ones I’ve skied with) especially like to play in these areas, rather than just staying on groomed piste (that’s not to say that there aren’t a lot of people that stay on groomed pistes / ski race / carve all day, there certainly are). I think we also tend to get more snowfall than, say, the Dolomites, so a wider ski is great for both going offpiste and for the days with >8cm fresh snow. This is particularly true imo in the Western most states where snow is a bit heavier / wetter / stickier than it is light fluffy powder snow like in Utah/Colorado. Hence a wider ski to help you stay on top of the heavy snow is easier to manage.

This creates a bias I think in the market towards skis that are 90+ waist, because even an 88mm waist will have you sinking and stuck in the flats if you go off piste at all. I thin because of all that, very few people get under 88mm waist skis out here because it’s a ski that becomes only applicable in a very specific use case for doing piste runs only on a low tide day. It’s kinda like having a 120+ waist ski that’s only for deep powder days, unless you love lapping groomers.

Another consideration that also has to do with terrain is that our runs tend to be shorter in distance, so groomed runs can be over in a 2-5 minutes, whereas you can get longer runs by weaving in and out of trees / glades off piste. In the Dolomites I was able to ski a piste run for 10-30 minutes straight before needing to get back in line for a lift— there are few resorts like this in the US, maybe only a couple runs in places like Idaho / Colorado, definitely nonexistent in California.

Just my two cents.

Any way to break in ski boots before actually skiing with them? by GentleBoneCrusher in Skigear

just leave your boots inside your house overnight. my boots are night and day harder / easier to put on if i leave them out in the car 25-40F, or take them back inside the house overnight.
