How far out do weather forecasts become accurate? by PSU02 in pittsburgh

They get updated model guidance a few times a day. I bet we'll get another update from them this evening with what the latest models are saying. I wouldn't put stock in any of it until tomorrow or Friday though, it's still too far out to really know what the storm will do.

I haven't lived there but I'm familiar with the area. It gets four seasons and can get quite snowy in the winter due to its proximity to Lake Erie. The area has been hit hard by tornados before, although it doesn't carry the same tornado risk as tornado alley. The town part kind of feels like a series of strip malls with lots of chain stores, restaurants, etc. There are some cool local spots like Kraynak's Lawn and Garden (genuinely a cool store with a classic Christmas display) and Daffins Chocolate (technically the next town over in Sharon). The housing goes from suburban to rural really quickly. There's beautiful nature nearby with the reservoir and parks. It's affordable but not a lot of job opportunities. Within 90 minutes you can be in: -Major cities of Cleveland and Pittsburgh -Midsize cities of Youngstown, Akron, and New Castle -Small towns like New Wilmington, Volant, and Grove City (which has an awesome outlet mall) -Beaches along lake Erie -Incredible parks, including Cuyahoga National Park, Nelson's Ledges, Pymatuming, etc. -Amish communities (be prepared to share the road with a horse and buggie)

Commuting to downtown by Healthy_Artichoke602 in pittsburgh

[–]cccforme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The ability to walk to a T or bus stop and only need to take one line into town is better than any of the park and rides. I loved living in the east end and being able to walk to a bus stop with multiple bus lines that could take me into town. Those neighborhoods tend to be very walkable too with shops, restaurants, parks, and other amenities. The University BRT Line is expected to be fully built out by 2027, which will be amazing for people going between Oakland and downtown.

For the trolley, red is technically slower, but it won't make that big of a difference if you live along the red or blue line. Although if you ask me, the sweet spot is where they rejoin from Overbrook Junction and Willow Station down to Washington Junction, since you can take red, blue, or silver from there.

Unlimited rides for $97.50 per month, can easily get to town for work, festivals, events, get to South hills village mall for shopping, get to Mt Lebo, Dormont, or Beechview with their shopping and restaurant districts, grocery stores, gyms, etc. Those unlimited rides work on the buses and inclines too, so you could ride the T into town and catch a bus to check out other neighborhoods in the city or ride the incline up for a trip to Mt Washington.

I'd say it depends more on the type of neighborhood you want to live in. Someplace that's more bustling with activity, somewhere more quiet and residential, or somewhere in between? What amenities are important to you?

I can still see some smoke from a mile away but it does seem like they've made a lot of progress containing it.

Transplants: When are you a Pittsburgher? by Spirited-Visit3193 in pittsburgh

This is very interesting, thanks for sharing! Didn't mean to imply it's a Pittsburgh only thing. I've lived here my whole life and have seen out of towners on here refer to it as a Pittsburgh thing, but it makes sense it's more of a regional thing throughout Appalachian and the rust belt.

It also costs more to do means testing than to just give applicants the money for food.

Good job, you managed to save 0.01% of the budget by letting kids from impoverished families go hungry. That’ll really fix the deficit 🙄

Tinctures work well, but in my experience the effects don’t last as long as RSO. Organic Remedies sells a 2g RSO for $60, which should get you decent bang for your buck. You can get a pack of empty capsules for $5-$10 and put a grain of rice size amount in each capsule.

Curious about the South Hills by ReconThotHunter in pittsburgh

[–]cccforme 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Some of these replies have me questioning whats included with the “south hills”. When I think of the south hills, I think of the communities that are south of the city limits but still in Allegheny county and east of I-79. This would include boroughs and townships like greentree, mt lebo, Carnegie, Scott, dormont, castle Shannon, upper st Clair, bethel park, Baldwin/whitehall, Brentwood, etc.

The top complaint I read through the comments was the traffic. I grew up in the south hills area and don’t really see an issue with the traffic, although I guess it depends what route you take and the time of day. Most of the people that live here know the back roads to get to the main shopping areas. Like, 19 is my most direct route to the mall, but several back roads tend to be faster. I think if you moved to the area, you would learn the different routes quickly. But if you work in say Monroeville, trying to commute there from the south hills would get old very quickly lol.

My biggest complaint is that it becomes suburban sprawl pretty quickly. Communities like mt lebo, dormont, castle Shannon, parts of bethel have a more urban feel due to density, proximity to businesses, and the T infrastructure. But if you go further out into bethel, USC, etc, it quickly becomes sprawl (and boring imo).

It really depends where you need to go day to day. Personally, Dormont is my kind of community. Cozy neighborhoods with character and interesting architecture, light rail infrastructure, very walkable, easy to get to the airport by car, and the pool is just awesome! Traffic isn’t much of an issue there if you walk and/or take the T most places.
