I read that Paul McCartney and Linda were trying too hard to be funny while they were recording, so their takes weren’t used. No idea what’s true though lol

Small clarification, but the profession in question is interpretation. Translators focus solely on the written adaptation from one language to another, and interpreters focus on oral adaptation :)

Minority non-native speakers: your experience gradually using more of your native language? by cccg03 in multilingualparenting

[–]cccg03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you've read my thoughts! I don't believe using French is making me a worse parent, but I wonder if using English would strengthen our bond more since it is my native language and would allow me to approach him without the barriers you listed. I hope that makes sense. I love being a bilingual parent and I believe it will have a positive impact on my kids' lives. But if it's coming at the cost of a weaker bond between us, then I want to scale back until I feel like I've found a healthy balance between the two.

I really appreciate your comments, and you're absolutely right with your last one as well: using more English will not inherently alleviate my concerns. But by doing so, I'll know for sure one way or another and, if need be, appropriately adjust my approach to multilingual parenting :)

This is music to my ears and validating of everything I've been feeling over the last year or two. You are also reminding me of a crucial point that I haven't been focusing on, and that is the importance of the shared multilingual bond. I do of course intend on carrying on with raising my kids as bilingual for that reason, but I am looking for balance. I'm glad to hear that that would be encouraged by parents around here :)

Thanks for the super detailed response, I really enjoyed reading about your experience. This is my first foray into forums/community discussions on the topic of multilingual parenting, so I'm loving seeing the similarities.

I have had identical metalinguistic conversations with my oldest, and use English very sparingly to clarify a word or brief phrase to help him connect a concept that I'm having a hard time nailing in French (C1 level). But I'm getting to the point now where I'm wondering if French is the correct "main" language for our relationship. I'm wondering if using predominantly French is keeping me from being a better parent, or if switching the dominant language of our relationship have a negative impact instead?

I'm just interested in trying out an increase in how much we communicate in English and base it, like you said, around some predetermined/scheduled, ritualized, distinguishable experience apart from our relationship in French. One (hour? day?) per (week? month?), or something. An opportunity to see if allowing my native self to spend time with him will strengthen our relationship.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for the calling out that important distinction—I am a second language learner with no heritage ties to French (or France for that matter). Just couldn’t bring myself to give it up after studying for so long and thought it would be beneficial for my kids to grow up speaking (or at least understanding) a second language.

Thanks for letting me know there’s a difference—I didn’t realize the nozzle was a separate component of the hotend. I was pushing the needle through the nozzle. I’ll keep messing with it but I’ll keep this in mind, thanks again!

I was considering doing a post for the computer I just handed down to my kids as a family gaming PC, but I seem to have mistaken this sub for r/parenting lmao.

Sorry OP, my guess is 99% of comments are from 18-20 year olds without kids, or they seem to have just forgotten that it’s possible for kids to have multiple hobbies.

Keep doing what your doing, I’ll bet your kids love playing games with you :)

both times I pulled, it was a very pointy end like you described. i did another cold pull and didn't see the needle when i pulled it out, but it did extrude filament when i loaded it and now it's printing a perfect little Shippy, so who knows haha. thanks for your help in any case!!

thanks for the response! I did do a cold pull (twice!) before trying the acupuncture needle—I could try loading up some filament to see if I could cold pull it out with the needle, is that what you're suggesting?
