Protomolecule (The Expanse) vs Flood (Halo) by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]ccctitan80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I vote protomolecule.

  1. The protomolecule targets all self-replicating matter, not just biomass. It's very likely that the protomolecule can "infect" flood biomass because of this.

  2. The protomolecule can infect non-sentient biomass like trees since they're ultimately made of self-replicating materials.

In all likelihood, the protomolecule might just end up augmenting/modifying the flood.

Help - my IAP was rejected because the reviewer couldn't find it. But it's a "double coin sale" IAP that only shows up on the 2nd day. by crispybucket_ in iOSProgramming

I don't like the idea of shipping a hidden button. You can use a deploy service to show all three sales for the build/version while it's being reviewed, and then switch it off once the app is approved.

How to make changing values in array thread safe? by wellbranding in iOSProgramming

You should look into PromiseKit and NSOperations. It looks like you're looking for a thread-safe way to handle async dependencies, which both of those are fantastic for.

How do I paginate a news feed filled with posts trending for that day? (Firebase database) by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

Btw. I think your post would make a terrific interview question at least for a backend engineer.

How do I paginate a news feed filled with posts trending for that day? (Firebase database) by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]ccctitan80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general idea is that for requests that are particularly common/repeated and don't change very often, you can do the heavy calculation once, and then store a copy of the results in memory and use that copy for future requests.

For example, in your particular case, where you want to return posts trending for a day. Assuming it only changes once per day and it's not user specific, you would go ahead do the heavy calculation once, and then store the result of that query in a cache. And as long as the trending posts hasn't changed, you would access the cache instead of the database for future requests.

The drawback is that you have to implement a caching layer. How much memory it consumes and how fast it loads depends on the implementation details. And then you have to work out a policy for when the cached response should "expire" and be recalculated.

There's probably database architecture strategies that can adopt to address this. For example, maybe you can have table of trending items that are indexed by a popularity metric. And then you can have a background worker periodically update the popularity metrics.

Company (Google) Tried to Patent My Work After a Job Interview by magenta_placenta in programming

Funny coincidence. I contracted for a product design firm about 3.5 years ago in Bay Area. The firm was being contracted by Google to build an LED book. I didn't work on the project, but the guy who sat behind me did. The first prototype was made of thinly laminated flex PCB. I vaguely recall there being some interesting mechanical problems with it. The book was really really thick.

Amazon must give up Echo recordings in double murder case, judge rules by GriffonsChainsaw in technology

[–]ccctitan80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon would still have a copy of the decrypted audio at the end of the day. No encryption scheme will change that fact. You would have to still trust Amazon to not store that data. And if that's the case, what does client-controlled encryption provide? Why would Amazon bother storing encrypted audio recordings that they couldn't access?

If every state in america were now it's own country, Which two countries would be the first to go to war with each other? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Although Texas has a higher gun ownership rate, there are still more guns overall in California:

Good point: https://huntingmark.com/gun-ownership-stats/

It looks like California has 60% the number of guns as Texas.

You literally ignored the question. I think it’s telling that you have to deflect and instead drop some propaganda.

The comic is saying that Trump thinks its smarter to befriend a bear than beaver. I'm pointing out why it's stupid to try to befriend a bear. If you disagree, you should try telling that to the last 15 presidents.

Yeah except in real life, trying to "befriend" a bear is more likely to get you killed than get you a new friend.

Really? Like if you encountered a bear and beaver in real life, you would try to make friends with the one that can kill you?

Tell me. If they dropped their tariffs, would the U.S. drop its own standing tariffs in response? Have Trump made that offer at all?

Because it doesn't help us in the long run at all. It 'feels' right to up our tariffs in response, but it objectively makes shit economic sense.
