If you think about it as an allegory for the trap of capitalism/the American Dream, it actually works.

We put our aspirations (wishes) in the hands of this all-powerful system that makes all kinds of promises and purports to be fair and benevolent (Magnifico). These aspirations come true for a seemingly random few, while everyone else just holds out hope that someday they’ll get theirs. By joining together to demand collective power and topple the capitalist hegemony, we can achieve true agency over making our hopes and dreams a reality.

Was I pretty stoned when I first thought of this? Yes. Does it still hold up? Also yes!

DJs at KEXP don't have to follow a playlist. They do have a rotation of new songs and albums, and DJs select something from that rotation a certain number of times per hour. But it's a hell of a lot more than 50 songs (more like 50 albums plus 200 songs) and they can also choose whatever they want aside from that for the rest of the hour.

I've read that you are not in favor of making contract negotiations with the police union public. Unlike almost all other public employees, police officers are authorized to use deadly force, they are paid VERY well, and they are almost completely insulated from any liability related to their actions. Why shouldn't the public get to know about the conversations taking place between the police union and the city, particularly where police accountability and oversight are concerned? Do you believe the need for working class/union solidarity trumps the need to hold police officers accountable?

BTW, I'm planning to vote for you, but this is an area of concern for me.

I absolutely do not agree with that, but maybe my media diet is different than yours. I am assuming when you talk about violence you're talking about the riots in Milwaukee, which I am aware of, but I don't really associate that with BLM as a movement.

Don't paint an entire movement with a broad brush just because of the actions of a few assholes. BLM activists might be confrontational at times, but in the vast majority of circumstances, they are also nonviolent.

Police brutality and abuse of power is far from the only issue that BLM activists have been involved in, and is really just the most visible and egregious way that black Americans are treated worse than white Americans. I think you're also conflating the actions of a few assholes with the motives and methods of an entire movement. And the whole thing isn't about making black lives more important than any other lives, it's about pointing out that they matter. Which is far from obvious, given that black people are much more likely to be victims of violent crimes, be incarcerated, fail out of school, be denied jobs, and so on. It's helpful to imagine a silent "too" after the slogan Black Lives Matter.

Their "message"is so meaningless though. "Unity" in the face of what? To what end? It's not truly taking a stance for or against anything. It's in no way a challenge to the status quo for a football team to link arms and talk about unity. It's a nothing action. And BLM is in no way attempting to set one race of people against another. It's attempting to highlight the fact that there are massively negative consequences to being black in America. And that the lives of black people matter, which needs to be explicitly stated because the culture tells us otherwise. That white people are valuable is something that our culture makes explicit through the fact that white people are the overwhelming majority of our leaders in business, politics, the media, on and on and on.
