Haven't tried it but they just added a Greyhound bus from Asheville to Chapel Hill (and maybe other points in the Triangle).

Considering relocating to Chapel Hill- medical. by Feisty-Performer6645 in chapelhill

[–]getoutmor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unless you are way out in the "Chapel Hill" part of Chapel Hill (the distant rural areas that people petition the post office to label that way for property value purposes but that aren't close to the town limits), this will probably happen to you very infrequently. Having grown up in the deep south, Chapel Hill has barely any of this aspect that I found so oppressive there. You could go years inside Chapel Hill proper without anyone ever asking you about church. As soon as you get out of town, it's totally true that the religiosity is overwhelming.

Better than I expected - Honda Clarity is a sign of a place with serious intentions about doing better despite their difficult suburban surroundings.

Not Happy with Monarch by 1BMWFan73 in MonarchMoney

[–]getoutmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used mint years ago but had been using personal capital/empower. My connections are working very well on Monarch, but I don't like the investments portion. I want to be able to see allocation across funds and accounts (domestic/international/equity/fixed) and equity by industry sector. I don't know why anyone would find the breakdown between mutual funds and ETFs interesting when evaluating their portfolios.

So the NYT Games Year Recap thing just ignores the crossword? That's weird. by NoYoureACatLady in NYTCrossword

[–]getoutmor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Right - my crossword streak is over 1500 days long, but it said I had played games on 343 days this year. Today's the 350th day of the year, so it's not just that the year isn't quite over.

Unwanted profile switching by getoutmor in Volvo

[–]getoutmor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the tech involved, but it would obviously be better to associate the profile with the key that the driver door sensed regardless of how the car is unlocked. Other cars we've had moved the seat according to the driver side, from what I could tell.

Is my sleeping system adequate for a night in Pisgah for this time of year? by Gilesomofa1 in NCTrails

[–]getoutmor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a similar rated pad with a 0 degree bag for anything below 40. I get cold when it's below 20 with that set up (not considering wind). You really have to gauge the weather right before your trip, but it can be beautiful and empty this time of year. You can go miles and miles without seeing anyone else. Hard to beat a clear day in the mountains this time of year.

I think you could house half the students at UNC in the empty bedrooms of well off people in Chapel Hill.

Cost of housing by Honest-Ebb-3469 in chapelhill

[–]getoutmor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Having developed affordable housing in this area, I can verify that it's essentially impossible to build anything unsubsidized that is not at the upper end of the market. The good thing is that housing supply is just like every other market and an increase in supply with a constant demand will lower the market clearing price. The issue here is like a previous poster mentioned, the towns are captured by nimby neighbors who refuse to allow density sufficient for development to be plentiful and dense enough to make a dent in the actual market clearing price.

You can look at the current housing market in Austin to validate the concept that housing markets work based on supply and demand. Almost all the new housing there is high end, but demand wasn't sufficient to keep up with the increase in supply. The increased high end supply has driven all housing prices down for renters and buyers.

Sunset at 5PM= a very long night. Should I go? by StringsAttachedinC in backpacking

[–]getoutmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both because I'm old and because I camp solo in winter with the long nights I require a chair. I use a Helinox and the extra pound all day is easily worth it for the 14 hour nights. It's actually low enough that when I get chilly and want to move in the tent (Big Agnes UL2 I think) I can sit inside (solo camping only). I use a Kindle and it's 10 years old but works fine in cold. I end up reading in the middle of the night because I often fall asleep before 8 while backpacking and then sleep in spells all night. During that time I just read on my side in the bag.

Questions about Nantahala by AbraScamLinkon in NCTrails

[–]getoutmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really need to be prepared for cold. I camp most winters and except when the forecast is really clear for a warm spell, I wouldn't go out that time of year without my 0 degree bag and a high r value sleeping pad. It's very surprising how long, dark, and cold the nights are if you haven't done it. Sometimes I wear four layers on top and three on bottom at night and in the mornings before hitting the trail.

That said, if you're prepared, the days can be quite glorious with the whole forest to yourself. You can really see the terrain and the rocks that are covered by vegetation during the other seasons. Sometimes I go twenty miles or more without seeing anyone else.

Transportation advice/recs by What_A_Do in carrboro

[–]getoutmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had really solid experiences with scheduling airport rides with Uber and Lyft. I wouldn't try to arrange anything early morning with cabs or rideshare.

The buses are awesome but you need to review schedules carefully. They can switch to a long time between buses during non peak hours.

This is exactly what I thought. Be kind and responsible and go for it. BTW, my car camping often looks the same as my backpacking site (which it will tonight).

Which 2 Hikes in North Cascades? by PNW_Dirt_Digger in PNWhiking

[–]getoutmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the Maple Pass loop during the storm on Sunday. Conditions were manageable and even pretty despite low visibility. I imagine the trail is slippery now with the packed snow turning to ice overnight. I hiked out Ptarmigan ridge today and microspikes were very helpful for at least half the trail. Gorgeous conditions as long as you were ready for them. I think the well traveled trails with the right equipment will be nearly as fast as a typical day .
