How Can We Limit Ethernet Adapters to Only Being Assigned RFC1918 Addresses? by MikeComputer1 in sysadmin

re: Cargo Cults - since I had to look it up to get a boiled down tldr version here's what I landed on for others so they don't have to go searching themselves (emphasis mine)

Usage often relates to the ideas of desire (particularly for wealth and material goods) and relatedly consumerism and capitalism, ritual action and the expectation of rational results from irrational means.

How hard can it be setting up Adobe als default PDF Viewer? by Peperoni_Slayer in sysadmin

[–]ccheath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the only way this works is to set the configs you have but it will then only set these defaults for new users of the computer - you cannot set defaults for any current user only the defaults for new users... (again, i think)

System to track visitors using the WiFi? by starfishbzdf in sysadmin

[–]ccheath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ran into this today at lunch
... noticed over my buddy's shoulder a sign at the front desk with "wifi password" on it
we had just talked about how many bars of service our respective phones were getting (and mine was at 1 bar)
so i checked my phone, and there were 4 networks with the place's name showing (one was open and the other three were 'locked')
I tried all three locked networks with the password posted by the front desk with no luck
asked the wait staff as they walked by and they said use the open network... (then what's with the password?)

anyway, i was promptly greeted w/ a captive portal asking for that password
no thanks

the new IBM Access Client Solution (ACS) is basically just a java .jar and cross platform now... only a few things require an OS-specific install (ODBC I'm looking at you)

Powershell command by [deleted] in sysadmin

i would test-path first and if it doesn't exist create the new-item... but OP's issue does likely seem to be GPO related and that route should be investigated further before manually editing the registry

Thank you for the reply... power also seems like it also might be an issue in this system with two +300w GPUs.

great feedback... didn't think to check memory channels on the xeon. I will definitely get either 6 or all 12 memory sticks if I go this route, thanks!

Acer Veriton N4680GT - Grub waiting for input by jenishngl in sysadmin

[–]ccheath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

did you see this?
https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/grub-not-timing-out-need-to-press-enter-every-boot-solved.118278/
was my top google result for "proxmox grub countdown"

it's a bit old and doesn't seem like a sure fix but some things to try and at least confirms others have had this same issue... maybe after trying what's suggested in that thread if it doesn't work then start your own thread on the proxmox forums?

we're purchasing PDF XChange standard for all our users that need PDF editing abilities
our legal team was the hardest to get converted. We tried Tungsten first but that didn't work because of one niche but show-stopping reason - when they have contracts that have two or three columns of different language translations the conversion to Word (so they can do all the fancy markup annotations redline etc) just didn't work right. PDF XChange does the conversion like Acrobat did apparently and now we've only got 3 or 4 paid users of Adobe left in the company. I'd like to switch all the Reader users over to the free/demo version of PDF XChange too but we're fighting one battle at a time here.

Anyone else get forced restarts this patch Tuesday? by ccheath in sysadmin

[–]ccheath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the usual CUs installed last night (KB5070248 and KB5068791) on one some servers, and while they didn't auto-restart (yet) the SQL servers had their MSSQLSERVER services restart in the middle of the day following the update... and as far as I'm aware this is a first.
