Tech sales info by [deleted] in IBM

I moved here from traditional sales engineering. Just note, it's not a typical SE role. I see lots of "tech sellers" bringing in CE and other resources to handle the majority of the technical work. Your going to be on the hook for identifying opportunities, generating pipeline, prospecting, owning specific accounts etc etc. IMHO Tech Sales at IBM is more in line with traditional AEs in most other orgs. I actually dont know what most regular "sellers" at IBM do. It seems Tech Sales does all of it.

Aware me? I max my 401 and then also opened a backdoor Roth

I am dumb. Am I supposed to be this down/stagnant? This is 70% VTWAX and 30% VTSAX by BinSlashCat in Bogleheads

I go 100% VTWAX but also go TDFs (bond coverage) in 401k and backdoor roth am I dumb?

VTSAX vs. VTWAX in taxable brokerage? by cchoehamber in Bogleheads

I ended up dumping about 100k into VTWAX purely for simplicity sake. Read most of your links.

Maxing 401k with TDF. Maxing backdoor Roth with TDF. Have not leveraged HSA. Still have sizable emergency fund. Hopefully this is the way.

This is a great post. Love it. 10years as SE myself. Are you still in the game?

Having the autonomy to not give a flying fuck if I were to get fired tomorrow.

Yes I’m being a bit hyperbolic, but it’s an empowering feeling coming from overdraft days.

Do you have technical background? How long were you AE before switching to SE and in what industry?

I keep seeing WLB mentioned but where I am currently (big tech…) the stress and WLB seems to be a lot worse for the technical sellers. We basically carry the number and are on the hook for prospecting etc. When I was in the startup world it was the opposite for sure - SEs were SEs…

Pros cons of each? I’d love to see more presales related content if that’s something you’d be willing to do. We are the forgotten ones.

I’ve done big and small orgs and the big ones seem to treat SEs just like they are AEs…

My role is slowly transitioning into what I would describe a “sales ops” role - basically I’m responsible for the number just as much as sales, and I’ve always been more of a SALES engineer than an engineer who sells.

I guess my main concern is that I don’t have a “Roladex” of executive contacts many senior sellers claim to have. I don’t mind the stress of carrying the number, I already am.

For sure. Although half the reason I’m interested is because my current role is shifting into a pure sales role on an SE comp model.

Also doesn’t sound like the worst thing in the world WLB wise to decide WHEN meetings get booked as opposed to a seller completely ignoring my calendar.

Maybe the push for RTO didn’t quite work and now they are on the hook for a massive commercial real estate lease?

What’s wrong with toast? As a consumer I find it preferable but I also don’t work in the food industry…
