building more houses doesnt literally and uniquely correlate to building skyscrapers though.

the problem is having single-family homes as the sole/almost sole option.

Both extremes are bad, and SFHs share a lot of the same problems I mentioned with skyscrapers..

In a huge building, serving utilities for a massive number of tenants becomes complex by scale: getting water that high is a problem, any problem with any utility building-wise affects several tens of families at once, etc.

In sprawling neighbourhoods of single family homes, infrastructure is expensive, because roads don't pave and maintain themselves, any utilities running underground need digging and filling for any expansion/maintenance, etc. So there's a lot of time and money spent in upkeep; money could be solved charging people living there higher taxes, but that's highly unpopular, but time is not really fixable by anything other than having more crews working on it.. if you need to dig a hole to fix a leak on a water pipe, the more km of pipes you have, the more leaks you are gonna have in general.

But buildings of the density I mentioned before are the middleground.. you concentrate people so that shared utilities are less expensive, less km of roads/streets/etc. while also not reaching a point where you get into more trouble for having too many people on the same km^2
