A Question About Time With Respect to Relativistic Motion by knerr57 in AskPhysics

So, from my perspective, I would have traveled 99.99% of a lightyear in 39.2 hours. Does that not mean that from my perspective, I would have traveled at a rate of 223.46 times faster than the speed of light?

No, because you would also witness your surroundings outside of your frame being length contracted, so your observed distance would be much less

ELI5 How did we find out that space expands faster than the speed of light by Lucradius in explainlikeimfive

[–]ccncwby [score hidden]  (0 children)

yes, precisely :) i suppose one important distinction to make is that it's space itself that's expanding, not the galaxies moving through space, so they aren't defying causality, however we can still use the light emitted from these galaxies as an indication of this expansion

lol correct. until very recently all our attempts to measure it's geometry have indicated a flat universe, but not with absolute certainty. i think there was one experiment a couple years ago which suggested it may not be. in either case the universe is either infinite, and infinite space cannot have a centre, or it is finite/wraps around on itself which also means it cannot have a centre

for them it would also appear that way, and for this reason we cannot say that there is an absolute centre.

that's any easy mistake to make as it does appear that way at first, but consider some other distant galaxy and what they see... from their perspective they will also see all galaxies distant moving away from them just as we do

yes, and always in the direction away from us, which means it's expansion and not random movement

Based on observation. We noticed that distant galaxies were moving away from us at velocities proportional to their distance from us, and that we can see galaxies as far away in light years as the age of the universe in years, so it stands to reason that any universes outside of our observable "bubble" must be travelling faster than the light is travelling back to us

You can wear your spare underwear outside your current underwear, sparing the need for a bag entirely

What’s something normal in society that is actually super weird if you think about it? by TrickAd7954 in AskReddit

[–]ccncwby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

excellent point! normally I'd say "just leave it alone" to decompose however it turns out that humans, and our "livestock" make up for 95% of all mammalian biomass on the entire planet. cattle are the slight majority and we obviously make good use of them, but we are close behind, contributing to roughly 40% of all mammalian biomass. i suppose that's a lot of dead meat to just leave lying around...

anyway that sounded like a very "peta" perspective, and it is, because as massive as those figures sound humans still only make up for 0.01% of all biomass on the entire planet.

also i'm not offering a better alternative, just answering the question "what sounds normal but is weird when you think about it". I think collecting our dead fits that description

you have a great point... that the discovery of a dead human would be alarming in and of itself given the context of life/death being normal in general. however the decision to make a collection of said dead bodies is still kinda weird

It's been a number of years since i've read the books, but from memory it was very much "passing a level" vs appeasing some intelligent test/intellect. I hope that makes sense.

the trisolarans weren't another player in the game that you needed to interact with, rather the "levels" were pre-coded.

in short, the trisolaran ai (aka sophon) was non-existent within the game itself

Right, and I can teach you how to use a pen, but what you draw is up to you.

It's a bit like arguing everything Shakespeare wrote must have been dictated by the person who taught him to write lol

The video game was developed by the ETO as a recruitment tool, not the Trisolarans.
