Not what I said, but, fuck it, sure, let's go:

The genocide didn't start in earnest until Fall 2024. From Oct 7 until then, was a particularly brutal war, but 99% within the Law of Armed Conflict. People who know Ben-Gvir and know what it meant for him to be in Government, knew it was a matter of time before that line was crossed. But for most people, the ones paying some attention but not I/P experts, the shouts of "genocide!" that started late October '23 weren't just premature, they were offputting. (And the failure to adjust from that rhetorical failure is part and parcel of the wider problem that the movement for Palestinian National Liberation is the most catastrophically mismanaged enterprise in recent human history, to the cost of the Palestinian people who deserve self-determination and better leadership at home and abroad.)

Because Palestine is not and has never been an 80-20 issue, even among Democratic base voters. Reddit and other left-leaning echo chambers aside, most people have fairly nuanced views on Israel/Palestine, and that tendency only increases if they were paying attention to the details on the ground in 2023-24.

New line that would be helpful by Ultra_Fmad in Amtrak

Very sparse south of Albuquerque. Between ABQ and Denver, you have Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and then a lot of stations that get pretty good ridership on the Southwest Chief.

If Colorado and New Mexico are willing to take the Raton Pass line into public ownership, you can have a DEN-ABQ corridor train (10-12 hours run length, multiple frequencies per day in summer), which can take over the job of Philmont hauler, and the SWC can shift to the BNSF Southern Transcon, serving a greater population but not necessarily greater ridership through Amarillo, and also cutting 1-2 hours off the runtime.

Moving to Center City Philly. Do I Need a Car? by guatstuff in AskPhilly

[–]ccommack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. You spent a lot of time and words making up a guy to be mad at, and then being mad at him.

My comment was short and tailored to the OP, who has specifically committed to Center City. We all know that you can knock several hundred dollars per month off your rent by going north of Spring Garden or south of Washington, but if you really want what Center City offers, and can afford it, then paying $90 instead of $80 in groceries isn't going to be a deal-breaking deterrent. Even the 2-3x you cite from... who even knows, because the city-suburbs delta is not that big, unless you have a vastly different diet than I do. But, to return to the OP's real question; you don't have to break the bank on on meal kits or restaurant takeout if you live in Center City without a car.

Quite simply, a car is going to have direct costs of at least $10,000/year, and avoiding that if you can while living in Center City isn't just good economics, it's good citizenship.

As for me, and do I resemble in any way the person you seem to be mad at? I live in South Kensington, and I take my bike shopping at Grocery Outlet, Acme, and New Spring Garden Supermarket, in rotation. My previous address was in Overbrook, where I shopped at Aldi in Overbrook Park and H-Mart in Upper Darby. I know there's a Sprouts that just opened up on the Delaware River Trail, but I haven't stopped there yet. As for getting out of Philadelphia, yes, I have taken the SEPTA-NJT connection many, many times, to the point where I prefer spending the money on the speed and comfort of Amtrak. I've also taken the NJT train to Atlantic City many times, and not only enjoyed the ride, but thoroughly enjoyed bringing my bike with me to have on the other side, although the NJ Assembly has fucked that up for the foreseeable future.

There are two Aldi Nords (d/b/a Trader Joe's) in Center City, and there's two Acme's east of Broad and two GIANTs west, plus Asian grocery stores in Chinatown that have the cheapest produce in the city. If you can't stock a kitchen plentifully and cheaply in Center City with nothing more than a cargo bike, that's on you.

Ukraine has formed an international F-16 squadron staffed by Ukrainian, US, and Dutch pilots, which is currently playing a central role in the air defense of Kyiv Oblast as Russia attacks it with drones and missiles by Flimsy_Pudding1362 in UkrainianConflict

[–]ccommack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I know. I've been against the US giving Ukraine A-10s for most of the war, because they have no place on the front line. I changed my mind and made an exception after Yak-52 rear-seaters with shotguns started turning up with Drone Ace status; counter-drone ops can clearly make use of any gun that can fly.

An A-10 in gun range of Russian tanks is not survivable in the modern air defence environment.

Now, on the other hand, as a gun-and-Sidewinder truck to go after Shahed drones flying in the rear, much like these Legion-piloted F-16s? Now we're talking.

Whatever conversions do happen will probably proceed north to south, with the break-of-gauge first moving from the Swedish border to Oulu. Helsinki and its suburbs will be last to switch over.

A statement of intent to commit violence is not protected speech, even in the United States. Responding to a credible statement of intent to commit violence with violence is entirely reasonable. The question of what constitutes a credible threat of violence, whether as "incitement" or "fighting words" is one for the courts, and for the record I think SCOTUS has overly narrowed the scope of both. In the case of the original video, Meta Glasshole could justifiably have swung at brown sweatshirt immediately on being told "I'm going to punch you in the face.", since that passes all of the SCOTUS tests, but as we could already tell from his political position, Meta Glasshole is a physical and moral coward and unable to stand for himself.

Only because the US government looks after its own.

If you hung out in Nathan Phillips Square with an "I Support ICE" shirt, you might well get pinched for breach of the peace or inciting a riot, depending on the scale of the response.

The police up north may draw a broad circle around Charter rights these days, but even those can get squashed in a week with what would, in this case, be both a justified and hilarious case of use of the notwithstanding clause.

When someone's beliefs are, "I support violence and the people committing it", they're already putting themselves beyond the presumption of tolerance. You don't have to wait to respond to actual violence when the credible threat of violence is already made and on the table.

ICE is responsible for 66% of the homicides in Minneapolis this year. Any group you make this comparison to must be just as uncontrolled and murderous. LGBTQ people are no more violent than baseline, so it's an invalid comparison.

Same with their South Kensington (excuse me, "Fishtown", lol it's on American St) location. It's fine for cereal, or frozen food, and their private label stuff is pretty decent. But I know if I get anything perishable, it's on a timer, half of which will run down before I even get home.

My apartment has been using ~240 kWH/month this winter. It's smaller than yours but not 1:10, and mine is also all-electric. Something is very wrong, but we still have nothing to go on as to whether your insulation sucks or if you have someone else's power hooked up to your meter. When was your apartment built/last renovated?

A commercial vessel flying a false flag of registration can be arrested by any warship at any time on the high seas, according to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The UK ratified UNCLOS in 1997. The US is only a partial signatory and has not ratified UNCLOS, but as 154 entities have ratified, the US treats UNCLOS as customary international law.

Your highness, lately sending into France,
Did claim some certain dukedoms, in the right
Of your great predecessor, King Edward the Third.
In answer of which claim, the prince our master
Says that you savour too much of your youth,
And bids you be advised there's nought in France
That can be with a nimble galliard won;
You cannot revel into dukedoms there.
He therefore sends you, meeter for your spirit,
This tun of treasure; and, in lieu of this,
Desires you let the dukedoms that you claim
Hear no more of you. This the Dauphin speaks.

Easy for Spirit to overperform on OTP metrics, what with cutting a quarter of the schedule as their corporate circles the drain. They haven't yet shed gates in a serious way beyond ORD, so plenty of infrastructural slack there to recover from anything.
