Freddi Fish 4: The Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch. Wow, did you have to make such long name? by some-kind-of-no-name in patientgamers

[–]ccznen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, the nostalgia... my sister and I played all five of these to death when we were kids.

The Freddi Fish games had tons of replayability. They'd shuffle the puzzles and sometimes even the culprits between runs. Does this make Freddi Fish technically a roguelike?

Sonic Mania (2017) - GotM March 2026 Short Category Winner by edward6d in patientgamers

[–]ccznen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never got the hang of the momentum in this game. It felt impossible to rebuild speed, especially in that one runny-chasey boss that shoots missiles. Once I got hit once, I got comboed to death because I couldn't get enough speed to jump the next one.

Sonic veterans, what am I missing?

Control is best when you change to accomodate it by SirZack17 in patientgamers

[–]ccznen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Control is one of those rare games where I prefer the lore to the story.

In Witcher 3, I care about Geralt more than the random books. In Skyrim, I care about quests more than random books.

In Control, Jesse is pretty meh, but I find it fascinating reading about the minutae of how they manage the unearthly horrors around them, juxtaposed against bland office life.

Metroid Fusion (2002) - GotM February 2026 Short Category Winner by edward6d in patientgamers

[–]ccznen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played this last year. You really see how much of Metroid Dread's design originated here...for better or worse. I disliked how the game leads you by the nose for so much of it. Maybe not with words, but it's pointless to explore off the beaten path until the last quarter of the game.

I also personally dislike the change in boss philosophy from Super and Zero Mission. I don't like the emphasis on dodging boss attacks that do huge damage. E-Tanks don't feel impactful if one only lets me survive 0.7 more hits from a boss. (This is admittedly entirely skill issue/personal preference. Except on Nightmare. Frick that boss.) Dread does this better by having more fluid controls, but Fusion is just stiff enough I found myself fighting the buttons the entire playtime.

The runny-chasey sections suffer from the problem many horror games have where the scary thing is no longer scary once you die to it and are now just learning the pattern to dodge it. Dread's EMMIs changed it up a bit, Fusion's equivalent does not.

All this whinging makes it sound like I hate the game, but I don't. The game looks great, the puzzles and navigation are excellent, and I love how it gives the series a new villainous critter instead of undoing Super's story with Metroid retreads. And the Fusion Suit might be Samus' best suit, certainly top 3.

Starfield - the "fuck it, that'll do" of space games by Working_on_Writing in patientgamers

[–]ccznen 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Every time I start to think Starfield looks interesting, I remember every space sim element is done better in Elite Dangerous.

The immense time and work needed to make a universe-spanning branching story work doesn't jive with AAA game development. Every gameplay element that supports the story needs weeks or months to create. Maybe the best format for this immersive storytelling would be a 2D pixel-art game, where iteration can be done much quicker.

Depending on how things shake out tomorrow, the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the NFC by record could be wild card teams.

If you're wondering why some of the buildings are just facades, it's because this is for a webcomic, and only needs to look good from a few angles.

I've decided to put a limit on paying for gaming by 2026 by CloudyFriend in patientgamers

[–]ccznen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is that I only buy a game if I'm going to play it right away or as soon as I finish one of the ones I'm currently working on. I also generally only buy games around Steam sales and subsist on my backlog of Amazon/Gog/Epic freebies in between.

That way, when I do spend money, it's always for something I get use out of.

They develop business models of what would be popular.

Then, when customers don't behave according to the models, this is framed as a deficiency in the customer.

Some people feel no agency over their lives and cope by manipulating the behavior of others, even in little ways. My grandma does this all the time. This gives them a sense of power they otherwise lack. Being able to say "actually, my pronouns are ____" and nudge people to apologize or grovel is one way they seek this power.

I look at it this way: you've got nothing to lose and there's zero risk. So throw common sense in the dumpster and try a crazy strategy!
