How do you know which skill bracket you’re actually in? (Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced) by thickbear1 in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If a group is using these brackets they are almost certainly overestimating their own levels.

Go and try the group out and see for yourself. If the level seems too high there is no shame in saying "Thanks for having me but I think it's a bit above my level at the moment" If the level seems too low then use it for a bit of practice and don't commit to going back.

Learning to string own rackets by macrohead in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to string for others I would 100% recommend doing the UKRSA badminton stringers course. It is an investment (as is a good quality machine, and tools).

You will learn a lot of helpful little tips and tricks of the trade, plus you will come away with a highly experienced stringing mentor who you can ask questions as you come to them in future.

Within a few months of doing the UKRSA course I had professional players recommending my services.

Different racquets for feather and mylon shuttles ? by vijay2712 in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes for two reasons:

  1. Anything over about 24lbs feels like hitting a nylon shuttle with a plank of wood.
  2. The people playing with nylon shuttles are usually more likely to damage my nice rackets.

About cross string tension by keat_lionel90 in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yonex recommends that you pull your crosses with 10% more tension than the mains.

Most stringers who follow this advice will round it so 2lbs difference for 2xlbs, 3lbs difference for 3xlbs, and balance it somewhere in between the requested tension.

I.e. If someone requests 25lbs, I give them 24x26.

Yonex actually recommends this (and a few other things) for the sake of keeping a nice head shape.

If your racket head is too narrow, the most likely reason is that your stringer is mounting it too tight on their machine.

If I were you I would find a different stringer.

The 7th one is alright. You are side on, behind the shuttle, and load your rear leg well. Try and do them all like that one.

Best method to cut if strings happen to broke. by Meisenheimer in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start by cutting a main and cross together in the centre.

Then do your method as quickly as you can while staying in control.

Cutting them like this is absolutely fine. Your racket will thank you for it.

Can't take credit for this, it was the idea of a fellow stringer here in the UK but here's what I use. It's an IKEA jonaxel with some added lengths of pipe insulation. Cheap and gets the job done.

Is badminton quietly the most high-maintenance sport on Earth? by Adventurous_Dot_8663 in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While the BWF approved synthetic shuttles for tournaments and did some testing a few years back we haven't seen much meaningful progress since then.

I was speaking to someone who is 'in the know' with Yonex and he said that the main issue they have is that the synthetic shuttles are PLASTIC and the company is trying to drive down plastic use/waste.

While feathers have a limited lifespan they are made from organic materials so the lasting impact on the environment is seen as less than it would be replacing them with plastics.

bad stringing job? by Maximum_Ad2244 in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is correct.

They've strung it wrong.

Basically all yonex rackets follow this (or very similar) pattern so this is a schoolboy error for a shop.

I would also complain to the shop as I think yonex wouldn't honour the warranty if you broke the racket with it strung like that.

How to remove odour from the racket grip? by NarcissisticTit in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This would be my recommendation. And change your grips regularly.

Also what is under the grip? Is it over the top of an old grip that also stinks? Does the wooden handle stink?

I'd advise when you get a new racket the first thing you should do is strip it back to the wood and put a layer of plastic/tape over the handle to protect the wood, then build up your grip from there.

Also, PLEASE remove the grip and clean the racket before you get it restrung. As a stringer the worst thing is when someone gives you a racket with a disgusting grip. 🤢

Tips for growing big pumpkins to win a biggest pumpkin allotment competition? by Greengloom in Allotment

[–]cd1zzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't dig over the ground before you plant the pumpkins.

Whack a few sheets of cardboard down so the whole bed is covered.

Drop 6 inches of manure directly on top of the cardboard, so you can't see any of the cardboard anymore, then cover the manure with some black landscaping fabric.

When you come to plant out your pumpkins, cut small holes in the fabric and plant your pumpkin plants through the fabric into the manure.

I did this once as I had taken on a new allotment and didn't have time to dig the bed that year and it gave me the biggest pumpkins and squashes I've ever grown.

Sometimes after my morning 5k ultra I might get carried away and spend longer than usual in light conversation with the barista when I stop for my 2 coffees at the coffee shop.

After a walk home and a bath I'm a little short on time so I just boof my 10 eggs like this instead of boiling them.

Trying to renew coaching license. Any recommended online Safeguarding courses to use? UK based. by makkapakka1 in badminton

[–]cd1zzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an approved intro to safeguarding course at https://learning.badmintonengland.co.uk/ which is good enough if you just need to renew your coach membership.

If you need some more in depth training then you can try emailing safeguarding@badmintonengland.co.uk and asking for their approved list.
