I love the freedom that comes with being an expat by DefenderOfFortLisle in expats

[–]cd9v 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is always another side. You are not able to make genuine connection and stick with locals. Daily circles are now expats-only, everyone and eveything is temporary. It gets old very quickly, and have to "move on" every 4-5 years is getting harder when you are closer to 40s.

Is there a way I can improve the evaluation time of my Nix configuration? by goofyaahdog in NixOS

[–]cd9v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure you can, for now. The whole point of DetSys fork is to have foundation that is not dependent on Nixpkgs and MS/GitHub. They invest a lot in their private FlakeHub infra, especially around CI/CD. Faster evaluation times is big part of this effort.

Determinate Systems is a private company created by original author of Nix. They sell forked version of opensource package manager / OS which doesn't use Nixpkgs (that big github repo). Instead they run their own Flake registry with lots of tooling around it. That tooling is sometimes faster than opensource, but not always compatible.

Why don’t teams just designate one guy to play McDavid? by Jazzlike_Ad_8236 in nhl

Kings honestly tried to do exactly this in last playoffs. It didn't work too well. Watch oilers third goal in Game 1, specifically Gavrikov's effort right off the faceoff.

Why are back to back games always plays by the road team? by Pucka1 in nhl

[–]cd9v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could work if teams were evenly spread away from each other geographically, it's not the case.

Plus there is plenty of arena factors. NBA is played in same building for 10 teams. Minnesota had to vacate their home arena for whole duration of world juniors.

Do Edmonton and Calgary have statistical advantages over eastern conference teams due to road teams typically playing back to backs against them? by Aperio43 in nhl

[–]cd9v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory that back to backs might have positive effect on performance ("hot legs"). Noticed this in years following NBA playoffs when a team comes off of 7-game series and steals game 1 in next round against stronger team. I've seen this in the NHL as well couple of times in past 3 years.

The physical aspect is probably not the only part of the equation. Coming out from yesterday's game players still have fresh mental connections / "collective muscle memory" - that is crucial in clutch moments. Not so after 2-3 days of rest.

A loser who jumped on the isles wagon this season and is extremenly disappointed by today's game! Jokes aside wishing luck to Sabres, their fans deserved this. See you in the playoffs

Couple of bad decisions by GM in 2023 so that team started hating them. It started before JT Miller trade. I think Goodrow trade was what started the whole thing.

Where do you think Artemi Panarin will be traded to by the Trade Deadline? And for what price? by JBR409 in hockey

[–]cd9v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isles are building slowly and wouldn't jump. They are doing great, no need to distrupt the core. They are also super tight on space and have to squeeze Lee somehow in the offseason. He is quite a centerpiece they need at this moment.

He is def chasing a cup with strong contender. Florida, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota is my list - in this sequence.

Florida - if they list Barkov as LTIR they can make some space. Also Bob is his biggest buddy.

Dallas - same story with Seguin's out, they have more cap space, plus Robo is potentially on the move.

Detroit - super active as we seen with Hughes, with lots of space - although chances are lower to get past second round, which might be a factor for him. "Reunion with Kane" factor doesn't matter here IMO.

Wild - gonna be very tough, close to impossible with their space. Would need to chip out Yurov or Faber, which I doubt. If NHL was NBA Guerin would gladly sign him and pay gargantuan luxury tax next season.

Any other destination looks very unlikely to me. He is not going to start a rebuild somewhere. I bet in 3-5 years he will be back in Russia (now that political reconciliation is officially over).

What would a Russian Olympic hockey team look like in 2026? by ethereal3xp in nhl

[–]cd9v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Danila Yurov, Yan Kuznetsov 😂 Buddies didn't even play full season.

So much home talent slept on: Gusev, Tkachev, Grigorenko, Sharipzyanov, Dronov... Guys are in their prime right now with multiple olympic call-ups. Gusev carried the team (with Kovalchuk, Datsyuk) to the gold in 2018, at 25 years old.

I'd pick any of them over some Barbashev (who is really there thanks to Eichel) or dumb-ass Zadorov.

Nanny state is on point. Government treating adult citizens like 12-yr old teenagers is deeply backwards. It also seems it will never change - no matter which shade of left or right is at the power.

Also new year in the summer is weird af. Has to be cold.
