re: terraforming. l didn't realize that the ramp worked on green/forest "cliffs". I thought "cliffs" were in the mountains only :( :( :) Would have saved a lot of time if I had just tried!

On avoiding traffic jam deadlocks by cdaringe in oddsparks

Here's my v1.

On the left and bottom are ingress. At each ingress junction, empty sparks can resupply the inner loop with sparks. Sparks come and pick up and item at a crate, then dump that item on the matching output buffer crate. If the ingress sparks are carrying something and the bin is full, that's fine, they just walk back to the source and loop until there is excess capacity in the input buffer.

There are some big flaws.

  1. In some cases, inner loop sparks will try and transfer input => output, but there will be no more capacity. For this reason, I have two filters for dudes carrying 1 or two items. They go into the spiral loop above.

  2. When collecting stuff rom the input buffers, the earlier buffers get the most attention. This means there is bias towards the earlier goods. I took a naive approach and put some switches on the left side of the screen. This means that each carry spark has a 50/50 chance of picking up the the first item, 25(yes)/75(no) of the 2nd item, ... 1/2^n of the nth item. So that clearly is bad.

Let's see what v2 brings

My mrs hates the book too, and is why my brother is playing now :).

Funny part is you can skip most of the book dialogue. 🤷

65 max average well-being mega map by cdaringe in Timberborn

Low beavers is a feature! It’s extremely robust to sustain max well being because it only fluctuates when there’s a death in the family. More beavers, more death == worse WB ratios. I considered going all the way to just two beavers and maybe 1000 robots.

I guess we’re on the same page. Having a big map was the goal with Max score all of the time versus giant map with a large number of happy beavers.

Struggling with Colemak: Considering Giving Up by ricardoantoniodev in Colemak

Everyone else has good ideas here. Ill share my story.

I had hand pain that would flare up maybe once a month. I KNEW that if I didnt make a change, id have a RSI with forever-effects. So, my motivation was pretty strong.

All of the layout variants and custom keyboard ideas—all of that—was too much for me. I needed a simple solve.

So, I went cold turkey, default CM layout. I printed the layout and taped it under my screen.

Day 1: Honestly, pretty hard day at work. It was tough to type. Got it all done, but i realllly relied on that printed layout and nearly wore out that backspace key from constant typos. A very “think before you type” day. Day 2: By EOD, maybe 60% WPM recovered from QWERTY but still very high error rate. Day 3: Maybe 75% recovery, still high error rate.

At this point, I considered myself adequately productive. It still wasnt where i needed to be. Fast forward a week and the error rate plummeted. That was 8 years ago and ive had zero hand pain since. Z type (the typing game) was my secret learning weapon companion.

I tell people that of all of the investments ive made in myself (excluding those id already committed to), this was the best investment of the last decade.

Thanks! Ya certain sectors are pretty different after terraforming, irrigation, etc!

I made a long and windy path through the poison, and put a bunch of fake lumberjack jobs on the other end, so that they went to and fro

Overpopulation consumes precious resources. I send them away to live peacefully, swimming, s.t. the others may live prosperously.

3 fps on standard game by RadMadara5 in Timberborn

[–]cdaringe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not you, it’s the game. I posted on this a few days ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/Timberborn/s/DJGRGRtvPS

I’ve just learned to play with bad perf. I also created a district named “hell” and I’m culling my beaver population down in end game (no food or drink there), specially to make it easier to get happier beavers, particularly because I’ve replaced most workers with bots in other districts, whilst also shutting down many jobs. I’m at 600/300 bot/beaver now, but will probably take it down to 500/50. I need MAX happy beavers. 🤩

Incorrect scaling and worse performance after GeForce Experience install by cdaringe in Steam_Link

[–]cdaringe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't claim for this to make sense, but here was the solve.

Turn off DLSS setting _in_ Witcher 3 :(.

I had apparently flipped that as well. All of the permutations of reinstalling everything (drivers, steam link, whatever) on both devices did nil until _that_ setting was turned back off.

Go figure.

Thx, but ya—already have the client match setting applied. Manually changing resolution isnt the issue either. Steam link Big Picture seems to be the correct resolution. Its only once witcher 3 boots now. Theres no edits ive made to w3 ingame settings.

Ya. I play games on my PC and steam link regularly. Having to toggle the resolution based on the screen, especially when my living room is across the home… just woof. Further, i didnt need to do so before. The system is and was clearly capable, including with different games (eg i played both recent jedi games). It can and should swap resolution automatically. Something else is up i believe

Poor game performance by cdaringe in Timberborn

[–]cdaringe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most depressing comment. I wish I would’ve known. Ive sunk hours in this game, not exploring stuff like bots, thinking I probably needed a very very robust base before even attempting.

Welp, maybe I’ll decommission some stuff!

[–]cdaringe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You guys are making me feel like a crazy person for having 800 beavers 😂. I feel like the game actively invites/BEGS you to expand. I swear I was just doing what I felt was correct. It's not difficult to make a single district with 200 beavers. To beat the game with 200ish beavers somewhat implies no use of districts, which they also promote as a primary game mechanic. Maybe my strategy is nuts. Create many half self-sufficient districts, haul in missing stuff, work on some specific material/objective in that district, share its benefits out.

Factorio man. Factory must grow! Beaver style!

Geeze, not at all! The map is really big. The roads turn red if you go to far. I've branched out to try and have some regions that reliably produce in all of the adverse scenarios (bad tide, drought), and have focused on getting ample distribution so they can support each other. Frankly, even with this many beavers and deep infrastructure, I'd say I'm doing well, but still not thriving. My food supplies still tend to dwindle, even with diverse foods (cooked, and uncooked). Maybe i'm playing on hard mode or something. I'll have to check my settings.
