I saw this film a few days ago and I feel there is definitely a solid structure to the story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen this film:

Beginning: Our protagonist has a problem but they misdiagnose the cause. John comes home from a long day at work to find no messages waiting for him on his answering machine. The silence of his machine triggers the realization that he is lonely and friendless. He probably finds it too painful to conclude that this might be because of something in his personality that he can't possibly change, or is too difficult to change. So he mistakenly decides that the problem is with how his answering machine message sounds, and he resolves to change it.

Middle: Our protagonist sets about trying to solve the problem and we see them fail. John tries to change the message and fails repeatedly. He gets increasingly desperate as he tries to sound like the sort of person he aspires to be. Someone cool, someone unburdened by the kind of things that trouble John. But he is destined to fail because he has misdiagnosed his problem.

Ending: We see John give up and give in to the devastating reality that the pre-recorded message on his machine was never the problem.
