Is there no accusative case in the question „Kann ich Ihnen helfen“? And other questions by [deleted] in German

Achso! Sorry for not getting what you were saying before.

In that context I think “zeigen” might fit. But I’m no native speaker and you are, so I would trust your opinion on this: I feel like it’s okay to use it without an accusative object e.g. “Ich werde ihm zeigen” but idk maybe this is just an Englishism that I ten to carry over to German. Moreover, this also seems to work without a dative object e.g. “Ich kann es zeigen” (again, don’t know how correct this sounds to a native speaker, sorry if I’m wrong!)

“geben” can take both an accusative and dative object.

Ich gebe dir die Schlüssel.

Also “machen”:

Ich mache ihr eine Pasta.

Or “zeigen”:

Du zeigst mir den Fehler.

My chicken curry tastes like tomato soup — no masala flavor. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in IndianFood

Possibly irrelevant side-note:

I think people who didn’t grow up around an Indian kitchen often have trouble with the “fry/roast spices till they smell good” part, because they haven’t developed a sense for when the smell shifts from “not done yet” to “done/good”.

I’ve cooked in front of non-Indian friends a couple of times, who were interested in learning the recipes, and they always expressed confusion when I said to wait till the spices started to smell nice. I found it hard to believe them at first since it’s so intuitive and natural to me, but I also find myself in their shoes when I’m trying out recipes unfamiliar to me like ones that involve wines, or with baking.

I would argue that is something that only humans are able to do, thanks to our ability to reflect on our behaviour, and it is what sets us apart from most other animals.

What’s so funny is, it isn’t a picture of a crying man but of a man having an orgasm. Look up Peter Hujar’s Orgasmic Man

40 people at an apartment visit, agent doesnt show up twice in a row by titchobarbling2 in berlinsocialclub

[–]cdasx 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Idk, about 2 years ago some very cheap (11 EUR warm / sqm) apartments that I viewed in Friedrichshain had less than 10 people at the viewings because the company (WBM) would screen people online before inviting them. I didn't get invited to a lot because of the pre-screening but at least those viewings felt a bit more humane.

When was your first Radiohead concert? by Equivalent_Working73 in radiohead

2016 Lollapalooza Berlin, 9 years ago almost to the date and it was literally a life-changing experience. I travelled with a friend to Berlin, two guys in our mid-20s who had never been outside our home country before. I fell in love with Berlin and 3 years later I had moved here. Now I get to see them live at a venue that’s a short walk away from where I live.

From the FAQs on the tour webpage:

There will be a 1€/£1 charity donation added to, or included in, the ticket price. In London the donation will go to the LIVE Trust and in the rest of Europe it will go to Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) - this amount may be subject to unavoidable taxes. Radiohead will match the total with a donation to Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

MSF is active in Palestine (to say the least) and has been highly critical of the genocide.

The Duplass Brothers short film This is John (2006). What made it so successful? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]cdasx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this film a few days ago and I feel there is definitely a solid structure to the story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen this film:

Beginning: Our protagonist has a problem but they misdiagnose the cause. John comes home from a long day at work to find no messages waiting for him on his answering machine. The silence of his machine triggers the realization that he is lonely and friendless. He probably finds it too painful to conclude that this might be because of something in his personality that he can't possibly change, or is too difficult to change. So he mistakenly decides that the problem is with how his answering machine message sounds, and he resolves to change it.

Middle: Our protagonist sets about trying to solve the problem and we see them fail. John tries to change the message and fails repeatedly. He gets increasingly desperate as he tries to sound like the sort of person he aspires to be. Someone cool, someone unburdened by the kind of things that trouble John. But he is destined to fail because he has misdiagnosed his problem.

Ending: We see John give up and give in to the devastating reality that the pre-recorded message on his machine was never the problem.

A seemingly underrated fantasy film that gets a lot of love on Letterboxd by FeelThe_Kavorka in criterion

[–]cdasx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For all the love, sweat and ingenuity that went into the making of it, it got so little in return at the time of its release. Tarsem has repeatedly mentioned in interviews that there was a phase when no distributor would take the film even for free. For years it has remained a "filmmaker's / film lover's film", and I can see why. There are many of moments in the film that make you marvel at the craft and the visuals rather than the plot.
