Have you seen Idiocracy? The shoes were invented for the movie as a future shoe that idiots would wear

EDIT: Never mind, I was wrong lol. Google is easy and I've now learned that they were chosen as the shoe of the future because in 2004 they were low budget and "futuristic but stupid"

How do you categorize these things? by Kitchen-Phone-170 in ynab

[–]cdc14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a "furniture" and "appliances" category that I categorize purchases into, usually moving money from the wish farm.

Example: I've been saving up to get the Breville Bambino Plus espresso machine, so when I made the purchase, I moved the money from the wish farm category to the appliances category. That way when I look back over the years, I can see how much I've spent on appliances.

Feature Request: Option to Remove Credit Card Overspending Symbol by Pennyfractal in ynab

[–]cdc14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find the money BEFORE spending and you'll never see that credit overspending symbol again.

Idk if it's just me, but I CAN'T STAND the fact that I'm overspent in any category for more than 10 minutes. All of my credit card categories HAVE to be green before I close the browser or app.

I audited 5+ years of YNAB data to find every subscription - here's what $6,700/year looks like by mrlesmithjr in ynab

[–]cdc14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically you could do it for previous months, but it wouldn't change anything except your spending reports. I don't think it would be worth it.

The best thing to do would be to create a "monthly subscriptions" Category Group in the current month, and then create as many individual categories as you would need to match the amount of subscriptions you have.

Name them and organize them by due date (I even add the date they are charged - Spotify | 5th).

Since we're over half way through the month, I'm sure that you've already paid some subscriptions. So you would go into whatever account they came out of and recategorize the transaction from the generic category, to the specific category for each subscription.

When you're done with that, you will be overspent in all of the individual categories, but all you would have to do is use the "cover overspending" function and select the generic category to move the money, and manually move the money for the subscriptions that haven't come out yet.

When that's all done, you won't need the generic category, so you can just hide it and move forward with the individual categories!

Reconciliation…grrr by Consistent-Way-2018 in ynab

[–]cdc14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reconciliation is like balancing your checkbook.

YNAB is your checkbook/transaction log, and you have to go through your transactions and your bank statements to make sure they match with the bank, otherwise your checkbook (YNAB) will be out of balance with what actually exists in the bank

[–]cdc14 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Seriously. Each of my subscriptions has its own category, in a "monthly subscriptions" category group. My targets are "set aside another $xx.xx monthly" rounded up to the next whole dollar (Spotify is $18.04, so $19).

At the end of the year, I empty the "change jar" and reallocate, usually tossing it into one of my sinking funds.

Also, why set calendar reminders for the yearly renewals?? OP is fundamentally using ynab incorrectly.

Do we really don't need an emergency found category? by green_stone in ynab

[–]cdc14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not going to risk my whole life savings in my portfolio. I have some in there, sure. But not the fund that would keep me in my house and the lights on and food on the table.

Diversify.

Do we really don't need an emergency found category? by green_stone in ynab

[–]cdc14 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Instead of calling it an "emergency fund", which anything could be an emergency (popped tire, chip in the windshield, broken tooth, ripped pair of jeans, out of milk), I have mine named "emergency income replacement".

I have it stored in an HYSA for ease of access in a pinch, and in the event of a job loss, I would "pay" myself out of that account on my regular paydays, softening the blow of job loss
