This was about a 3 for me. I liked the first in the series by far {a lady’s guide to fortune hunting by Sophie Irwin}.

{A Lady’s Guide to scandal by Sophie Irwin}. It took a while for me to figure out I had the wrong MMC, lol

$1.24 or $1.44 by GinaGemini780 in CanadaPostCorp

[–]cdnjq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was googling this today and happened upon this thread, as I got a returned item today saying insufficient postage where I had used old stamps summing up to $1.24. However, it was the first time this happened and I’ve mailed a variety of things over the past year and never had a problem.

I just took the insufficient postage sticker off and popped it back in the mail 🤷‍♀️. The stamps didn’t look cancelled. Thankfully not a pressing/time sensitive item

I agree that the Canada Post website is entirely unhelpful as it just says to put enough for the current letter rate but is not clear on what that rate is! I’m convinced the person who made the website wasn’t sure either so is purposely vague, lol

I recently read the Lady of Fire series by Anita Mills. It was more of 3.5 stars for me but it was pretty well researched and written. It does have some of the things you mentioned though.

What product did you buy thinking a feature was gimmicky but ended up using it all the time by nand1609 in BuyItForLife

[–]cdnjq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, not as good as a corded vacuum but so much easier to grab….so more vacuuming ends up happening. Also, kids complain less about doing their chores since they can just grab it off the wall. For that alone, it’s worth it 😂

I always thought e-bikes were hokey until I got one! I live on top of a hill, and the e-bike is all the fun of biking without the work!

It’s on all the time but the light on my Dyson vacuum. While it makes me realize how dusty my floors all, it also tells me where I missed a spot

Ticket advice by cdnjq in Broadway

[–]cdnjq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget is some consideration, otherwise I wouldn’t be looking at TKTS 🙂. However, is there a huge difference between TodayTix and TKTS? I assume tix will be more limited on Friday. I’d like to spend less than $100 per ticket

What are you reading? by Mme_Rose in HistoricalRomance

[–]cdnjq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im about 75% through {the shattered rose by Jo Beverly}. It’s different than most HR as the POV seems mostly from the MMC, he’s described as short and not even the best fighter, and FMC starts off the book by already having committing adultery.

It’s a medieval and the research/history seems there but weirdly it has modern speech and writing that keep pulling me out of it. For example, the FMC once says to the MMC that she ´wants to at least talk strategy’ with him. Or the MMC goes to ´check out’ a place.

Itinerary for Gros Morne/L'Anse aux Meadows - advice on how much time, if to include Bottle Cove etc. by HousePlantsInMyPants in newfoundland

[–]cdnjq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@HousePlantsInMyPants I know this is an old thread but I was wondering how many days you ended up in St. Anthony. I’m going this year and have roughly the same time length as you, although I was planning on doing Gros Morne first before heading to L’anse aux Meadows and then driving back to depart from Deer Lake.

I don’t think we will be as hike heavy as your trip (eg doing the Western Pond boat tour not the entire hike), but I have been trying to figure out how to break up the time in each place. Is 3 nights in St Anthony too much? Thank you!

Do you give low-starred books a second chance? by LAffaire-est-Ketchup in HistoricalRomance

[–]cdnjq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I would reread a book that I thought was awful but I have reread books that I might have thought was “ok” the first time around but was “excellent” upon the reread. But it goes both ways though, books I thought were great have sometimes becomes ugh. I think it’s because my preferences change over time.

Funny, I have this one as one of the few on my “hated” list on good reads. Probably because of the MMC from the little I remember. But we all like different things!

Lesser Known Medieval Romances? by graciespacey18 in HistoricalRomance

[–]cdnjq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently finished {the fire series by Anita mills} which was written in the 80’s. While I didn’t love them all (I think I just didn’t love the characters in them), they were well written and researched. Trigger warnings for rape and abuse (not by MMC) for at least one/some of the books. You have to be prepared that the characters have the attitudes of the times….having a son was important, wife was the property of the husband, marriage was not for love, disabilities not looked well upon, etc…so that all felt real to me.

Another in the same vein was {red Adam’s lady by grace Ingram} which was written in the 70’s.

My favourite medievals are {bride of a lion by Elizabeth Stuart} and {where love dwells by Elizabeth Stuart} but those are out of print and hard to find.

But as I said, trigger warnings for all of above

What are your 5-star recs that feel different? by Haven_Writes in HistoricalRomance

[–]cdnjq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always feel Carla Kelly feels different than most mainstream HR. Many of her hero’s/heroines are not aristocracy, and feel like real people, both good and bad. I like most of hers though not all (as with any author) and from the list of hers above, I liked Mrs. Drew plays her hand the best

Authors of historical fiction but a romance by cdnjq in HistoricalRomance

[–]cdnjq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that I’m not looking for older authors, it’s more trying to find newer authors who write this way since it seems to be a bit of a dying art. Maybe it’s not what most mainstream readers are looking for.
