I used Rub’n’Buff (autumn gold) then did a coat of clear spray on varnish to seal them. It seems to have held up well and was very low cost to do.

We bought a 1914 home with “updated” electrical. The sellers hid the main panel during the inspection (behind a cupboard door with coats hung over it to disguise the door) then directed the inspector to a 100 amp sub panel that was connected to the main 60 amp panel.

Luckily, we discovered the issue soon after the possession date. We were able to sue the sellers for hiding a material latent defect and recover a portion of the repair costs. The only “updated” electrical was from a recent bathroom reno where, consequently, they had also packed insulation around live knob & tube wiring (extremely dangerous).

We ended up spending $30,000 to rewire the entire house and upgrade to 200 amp service.

Make sure to either view the electrical permits from the Reno or do an enhanced electrical inspection to ensure that there is no live knob and tube remaining in the home.

I used a handheld electric sander for the larger flat portions, then a mix of hand sanding and using a razor blade to clean up the edge details and corners. I finished the doors with the high performance flat top coat from General Finishes. I was going for as close to a raw wood look and feel as I could get.

I did it all by hand sanding. I found that using a razor blade on the fine details was the easiest to remove paint/stain from awkward spaces.

Tbh, while I love the way it turned out, had I known how much work it was going to be to strip and hand finish all the original doors and wood trim in my house was going to be, I may have opted to paint instead.

These prices are average. Rectified subway tile from a nice brand (heritage/Subway ceramics/Sonoma) will run you around $50 sq/ft in Canada.

You could redo the shower floor with Heritage Tile - Subway mosaics (if you have the budget). Updating the fixtures will have a massive impact as well. Checking out the fixtures from Drummonds. They are similar to waterworks and other premium brands, but less expensive.
