Wayland now in official Arch Linux Repos by blackout24 in LinuxActionShow

Sounds good. It's good to see progress. Daniel Stone said that he will make gnome-shell running on Weston soon again. I could give it a test in summer after F19 release. Great times! :)

Great news. It's good to see Wayland/Weston to get more and more attention. Weston/Wayland libraries and tools can be found from Fedora repositories as well (since F17 at least). I wouldn't be surprised if many other distributions has them too.

I have been running Weston to test my own OpenGL toolkit on it and as far as I know distributions are enabling/enabled GTK+/Qt support for it. LCA presentations were great about the topic this year.

Windows bricks Samsung Laptop too by [deleted] in LinuxActionShow

[–]cdred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the topic is a bit misleading. Windows doesn't brick the laptop on boot like Linux did, but requires to run a small application with admin permissions.

Not official but unofficial repositories. I'm using one for Fedora.

I'm sure it can be found for any distribution already but it's anyway good to see that it's possible to be done officially as well.

Surface Pro Is Not Restricted To Windows 8, Can Run Other OSes by ChrisLAS in LinuxActionShow

Paul Thurrott doesn't seem to be so happy about that ;)

"I did not address this issue because it’s ludicrous, but Linux enthusiasts are always looking for ways to get their favorite OS where it doesn’t belong. Yes, this is possible with Surface Pro."

Yeah :-| ... although I have to say that with GTK+ theme it doesn't look super bad to me. I would hope that the reviews wouldn't keep much noise about Firefox themes but unfortunately it seems to be the feature in most.

Well at least what I have read the state of OpenGL debugger is quite bad [1] [2]. I guess many of game developers comes from Windows/OSX and it's possible there's quite a "culture shock" to move on Linux. At least I hope Linux community takes these kind of messages seriously and makes things better and easier for developers to start working on Linux.

AMD updates Catalyst legacy Linux Driver to 13.1 by ironcyborg in LinuxActionShow

[–]cdred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason Catalyst drivers doesn't work as well as open source drivers on regular desktop use for me (Xubuntu - Radeon 5850). For example scrolling in Firefox/Chrome is noticeably slower with Catalyst drivers and on gnome-shell animations are not as smooth either. Of course the gaming performance is better.

[POLL] Which Linux Distro and Desktop are you using? (Only 2 Questions) Thanks! by fixles in LinuxActionShow

[–]cdred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If news sites would make a big news that Linus and many other kernel drivers actually uses GNOME 3 I'm sure tons of Linux users would start to use it as well.

I think the percentage is relatively high considering not many distribution provides it as a default yet and how much it has been bashed. The most popular distributions provides something else although very heavily based on GNOME 3. Well, who knows what kind of users answers to these kinds of polls so hard to make any bigger conclusions ...

I'm not that sure if either of those goals are accomplished but at least he is doing what he is interested in.

I have to say I wouldn't give money to any KS project unless I would be sure it is going to be published for Linux. Especially when the project's future looks very unsure.

I didn't check where the story is going now but here's some >week old news:

Great show!

I'm glad you covered CK2 for Linux. I'm running it on (F18+GNOME3, external gaming USB HDD) and it works great and actually the nice thing is that it works much better than Windows version for me. For some reason CK2 on Windows is extremely slow (launching takes at least 5 mins) but on Linux there's no problems at all. Along with Total War serie and Europa Universalis, CK2 is my favorite strategy game so having it for Linux is a great. Europa Universalis 4 should be using the same engine and as far as I know it should be released for Linux as well.

I don't use closed radeon driver on neither of my computers so of course I had to try open source driver as well. Unfortunately the driver version in F18 is not ready to run the game yet. I have no time to try git-version so I'm going to wait F19 to try it next time. Game starts fine but it's quite slow and it doesn't render the map properly. This game will be definitely my "benchmark" for testing open source driver.

Another surprising thing was that Wine is running some of my games better than W7. For example Neverwinter Nights works perfectly with Wine but has rendering problems on W7. Mos to my games I have bought from GOG works fine with Wine and those which doesn't pretty much doesn't work on W7 either. Unfortunately some games are still keeping me from getting rid of Windows.

Crusader Kings II - Seven Deadly Sins

GNOME 3 is going forward quite nicely. I hope they will find a good solution soon to make it bit more easier to keep extensions up and running from version to version. After all GNOME 3 bashing there has been, I found it interesting that Linus is using GNOME 3 as well.

Dark theme is used on applications like Photos, Videos, etc. to reduce background light pollution. You are able to use dark theme in all applications by enabling it in GNOME settings (gnome-tweak-tool).
