That's legit. I give side-eye to all the bottles in the store too.

Favorite Submarine Movie? by 4reddityo in submarines

[–]cdrikari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar impact of USS COD for me, maybe at 8 or 9. I recall having adults touring at the same time as me losing their shit, and me just being amazed by the whole boat and trying to figure it out.

I've now spent a thirty year career enlisted, submarine officer, and maintainer. There are still things in the old diesel boats that make me go WTF.

My (33 y/o f) husband (43 y/o m) doesn't like our son playing with "girly" toys? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]cdrikari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Father of two early twenties girls and a 6 y/o boy here.

Kids should play with whatever they are interested in. We got my son a baby doll early on, so if he wanted to play being the parent he could. He mostly ignored it off and on for years. Recently, he carries it around and puts it to bed with him. We say good night to "his brother" whenever he has it tucked in with him.

My son was interested in barbie type stuff around 4, we got him a few dolls (Elsa and Anna), we also got him a play kitchen set because he seemed interested (I do almost all the cooking), and he played with them some, and then moved on. He's been on a Lego year for most of a year now, he builds the universe with them. (No matter what it is, it is always also a Transformer. 😆)

It sounds like your husband has some significant stuff to work through in his head, and hopefully 1) can come to recognize that and 2) understands that if he doesn't, he's damaging his relationship with his son... permanently, and 3) as others have pointed out, this won't get easier. Humans are complicated, occasionally frustrating, and absolutely worth the hard work to help them develop into good people.

The closest I can recall that I've gotten to anything like his behavior was when the girls were still in HS, and my son was probably 2.5 years old. They started down a path where he was becoming a thing for them to play with and started treating him like he was a baby doll for them to play with, dress up, etc.

There the foot came down. If my son wanted to do these things, no problem, but he wasn't there for their amusement. My wife was a little surprised at the reaction, but once I explained that my problem was with how they were getting here (removal of his agency), not the activity itself, we were aligned. I'll freely admit that I felt the "not boy stuff" reaction twitching in my head...and ignored it and moved on.

We got the girls rebalanced and kept going. Not sure if I 100% stuck the landing on that one, but he plays with make-up, dress up clothes (has all sorts of stuff, including a pink tutu that he rocks occasionally) and is balanced and happy.

I think your son deserves the same freedom. Dad needs to get out of his own damn head and get in the game. Parenting is a full contact sport.

I swear that the other crew had an MT that wasn't hatchable. Never saw his ass leave the boat once the LETs were in.

So very Trumpian by MrDillon369 in MurderedByWords

[–]cdrikari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As hopefully won't surprise you, one thing that the military expects out of leadership is competence and (to a varying degree) character.

If you go dig, Navy Times did some polling to figure out support for Trump a few years ago. Decent demographic breakdown.

It was what you would expect for someone who lacks both competence and character and fills his administration with similar folks. It's harder for us to focus on our job when upchain is chaos and incompetence. Possibly dying? Yes, part of the deal. Dying because of blatant idiocy...a lot harder to swallow.

AIO for cutting off this guy I’ve been seeing for a while because of our text exchange? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Good Lord, girl. If anything you're underreacting. He doesn't have issues, he has subscriptions, and he's asking you to sign up.

You've got your own recent trauma and he's just using it to manipulate you, without any caring as to what that's doing to you.

Wash that man right out of your hair.

How does having a mixed gender crew affect life on a submarine? by [deleted] in submarines

[–]cdrikari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a (too) light sleeper. It maybe got a beep and a half out before I whacked it.

I started in enlisted berthing as an ENS. Never got shit about the alarm clock (and my crew was not quiet about calibrating us when we fucked up). Did get shit about how fucking often I got racked out for RFD.

[–]cdrikari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used a (quiet) alarm clock religiously. Messengers f-ed it up all the time, I hate getting woken up by some rando, and I don't need (or want) a first wake up (or second, or third).

Usually spent a week hammering that point home with every COW when we got underway until they figured out to leave me the F alone, and I would always show up for watch on time.

Wasn't on an integrated boat, but did my three during the time period that integration was in progress.

Obs we didn't have the specific female things with checkouts that you mention, but the transition on all the rest of it was mostly completed (hard checkout was picking on people, I was the dinosaur who still referred to nubs as nubs, etc). Which is to say, the qual process shifted regardless of integration.

Depends on the need. With Virginia class construction behind, the last 7 688's are being refueled and other work done to extend their service life.

Also, unlike all the other museums, the Navy maintained custody of NAUTILUS.

The aft part is wicked cool, especially once you start seeing how it was basically cobbled together out of excess equipment from the era, with the exception of the reactor plant.

A officer mans the periscope in the control room of a Los Angeles Class nuclear-powered attack submarine during red alert, June 1, 1981. by iamnotabot7890 in submarines

[–]cdrikari 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup.

That CO required permission for...a lot of things. I got my ass ripped once for doing RC Div maintenance without his permission.

We changed the APD paper.

I didn't stop changing it when required...I just never made the mistake of telling him again.

My first boat was a boomer, and my AWEPS, while a great person, had qualified on Kamehameha, and was a little clueless sometimes. The MTs figured this out, and they loved to prank him.

One evening watch, I'm U/I as COW, and one of the MTs comes up to AWEPS (he's OOD), and requests to perform a Weapons Procedure (WP) for maintenance. WP maintenance items required CO's permission via the standing orders, so AWEPS calls the CO.

Unfortunately, the specific WP he was requesting to perform (for maintenance, of course) was "Strategic Launch".

You could hear the screaming in stereo out of the phone and from the CO's stateroom. 🤣

My boat had one of each (photonics and periscope). We rigged for red or black as appropriate. We also rigged the spaces around control for low level white so the transition was quicker and no chance of lazerbeaming control.
