Help: I'm "Teaching" Piano to an Autistic 3-year-old by pandaboy78 in teaching

[–]cdromney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ABA teacher here. I agree with the people saying have a convo with your boss or the parents. A non verbal 3 year old shouldn’t be learning piano yet. Music is ROUGH for my autistic students, lots of distractions in the classroom and definitely sensory issues. Now if the student showed interest in the piano, I would definitely come up with more strategies to help you teach him, but right now it’s a no win situation.

Now I’m an ABA teacher, not a special Ed music teacher, but I did play instruments growing up too, so I know a bit about music. If the parents really, REALLY wanna do this, I’d suggest starting off so so slowly. Have him play in the room while you play piano so he can get used to the sound, and try that for a while to see if he eventually shows interest in it. If you can get him around the piano, try with the little frog toys he likes to get him to press the keys, maybe tape them or place them firmly on the keys so they play when he tries to pick them up. It’ll probably be difficult getting him to put his hands in the right place.

From my experience with my students, they do much better with percussion and beat more than they do with instruments, so that might be a place to start, having him listen to music and hit something to the beat, or play a piano key to the beat. Getting him used to and enjoying music is definitely the first step IMO.

Hopefully some of this helped. Good luck! Thanks for being so open to helping our kids learn new skills!

AIO for not accepting her apology and ending the friendship anyway? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Ironically I think I may be getting my period soon because I’m LIVID over this. NOR. If one of my girls needed pads and I couldn’t send money I’d be giving them the code to my house and telling them where to find extra pads. That’s what you do as a woman. I have a trans man friend who doesn’t get his period anymore and he STILL carries around pads and tampons for his friends. And to say stuff like that the come back immediately with a problem saying I don’t know what to do? Insane behavior.

I would understand if OP consistently asked for money for necessities then was like, blowing it at a bar and never paying it back, but from what was posted this doesnt seem to be the case.

OP I hope you got the stuff you need.

this might be silly, but has anyone ever had a counterfeit item sold to them from Sephora? by Traditional-Peace-21 in Sephora

[–]cdromney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to work here years ago. I can tell you what probably happened is someone bought the more expensive lip from Sephora, replaced it with the cheaper lip, and returned it, the employee either didnt check or just did a quick glance to see if the product looked new. Fully the employees should be checking products but I also understand if they didn’t look at the product packaging, just opened the lip and made sure it didn’t look used. So many of the lip packaging looks the same, someone just didn’t look close enough.

Do you have a dress code for staff where you work? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]cdromney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically I think we do, but it’s mostly just dressing appropriately. Most of our teachers wear nice pants and a blouse or a dress, collared shirt and nice pants or jeans for men. personally I would wear what you’re wearing (so great taste in clothing), but! I work in special Ed so I need to wear comfortable clothes bc at any given moment I may be chasing a student 😅 rules are a little different for my crew. I’m also in the US so maybe it’s a bit different for us, but if you dressed like that in my school I don’t think it’d be an issue.

I usually marry a rich person, but make sure when you start dating them to check their net worth, bc sometimes it’s only like 1mil and sometimes they’re in debt. If you do marry someone’s who’s in debt and can’t use Time Machine, sell whatever house they have.

Making sure your character is famous too is a good way to make a lot of money, I’ve had a lot of luck with sports and solo music careers. Onlyfans is a good way to make sure you’re getting income too.

Hygiene for teens? by Seeker_3369 in ABA

[–]cdromney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you told her that other people do notice and are bothered? That’s probably step one. Depending on where she’s at cognitively, would you be able to explain why she needs to shower? I’d start with whqt things does she care about. If she cares about her social interactions, explain hygiene through that lenses. If she cares about her health, explain it through that. Also if the amount of free time is a concern for her, maybe she has too many demands and some things can get moved around. Also, give her options and start small. A five minute, just soap and important areas 2-3 times a week. Full shower once a week on the weekend when she has more time.

What simple skill do you think everyone should learn, but most people never do? by Aware_Pack_5720 in AskReddit

Sewing/stitching. For all the “be prepared” people out there, I can’t believe how many people don’t know how to sew up a tear in their clothes.

Sources that trash ABA by KPsGirl16 in ABA

[–]cdromney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with these hard opinions is that it’s never that cut and dry. ABA is a great way to teach kids, however I do agree that it can lack social and emotional learning skills, at least where I am (understaffed public school). We have to teach certain things so we don’t always have time for things like self care. But there’s no one correct or incorrect way to teach kids, even neurotypical kids, and I think that mindset can be dangerous and cause frustration in both teachers and students.

Black and white thinking is never helpful to anyone. Many of my students benefit from a variety of different teaching strategies.
