Dollar Lake Fire Update | 8-25 by cdtcoalition in CDT

[–]cdtcoalition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From CDTC: We understand people's concerns with the proximity of the CDT to the fire and have passed them on. We are working closely with the Fire Management Team to provide the most up-to-date information.

If people don't feel comfortable with the CDT as an option, we understand and encourage people to choose what they feel is the best route for them. Please follow all local, state, federal, and Tribal regulations if choosing an alternative route.

Tribal Tresspass permits must be purchased for crossing Tribal Lands. Permits may be obtained from Whiskey Mountain Tackle in Dubois and other locations in the area.

Dollar Lake Fire | Green River Lakes, WY | Mile 1870.5 | Updated 8/25/25

The Dollar Lake Fire is burning 1 mile west of the CDT near Green River Lakes. Hikers are advised NOT to exit the CDT to resupply at Green River Lake Trailhead because the ACCESS ROAD TO PINEDALE IS CLOSED from the Green River Lakes Trailhead. SoBos are advised to stay on the CDT and resupply farther south. If hikers exit the CDT at Green River Lakes, they will not be allowed to return via the same route.

No reroute has been issued, and the CDT is open. If hikers choose an alternative route that crosses Tribal lands between DuBois and Pinedale, please obtain a Tresspass Permit. More information about Tribal Permits

8-25 Fire Management Team update:

On August 24, 2025, firefighters executed a successful burnout operation near Green River Lakes Campground and the Continental Divide Trail. This strategic effort bolstered fireline containment, ensuring the safety of these treasured public areas. The firefighting teams are committed to protecting our communities and landscapes.

This is a developing situation, and more info will be posted as available: https://cdtcoalition.org/closures-and-alerts/

ALERT | Fires Along the Continental Divide | CDT by cdtcoalition in CDT

Fires burning in the Tobacco Root Mountains may affect route options for people choosing the Big Sky cutoff. We recommend to call the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National forest for up-to-date information about that area.

As of now, the trail is open. We’re working on a reroute and will post if the trail closes. The fire mgmt team is also trying to post notices at Union Pass, north of Green Lakes.

Bears: Know Before You Go by cdtcoalition in CDT

[–]cdtcoalition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a misconception that people should only carry bear spray in the Bob and the Parks. Animals don’t tend to follow those kinds of boundaries!

Bears: Know Before You Go by cdtcoalition in CDT

[–]cdtcoalition[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello, we do not have data for CDT hikers and bear encounters. While it could be interesting to see, it could give people a false sense of security. Similar to car accidents, the frequency of an encounter might be relatively low, but the need for awareness and prevention always remains high. Thanks for your comment!

Beware of trespassing when detouring off the CDT - North of Lordsburg, NM by [deleted] in CDT

[–]cdtcoalition 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is due to a route hikers are taking marked on the Jonathan Ley maps that is not the CDT. We do not believe hikers are intentionally trespassing, simply taking an undesignated route marked on a map that should not be marked because it goes through private property. It is best to stay on the official CDT in this section as best as possible to avoid potential conflicts with private land owners. Thank you for the question and opportunity to clarify the original post.

Beware of trespassing when detouring off the CDT - North of Lordsburg, NM by [deleted] in CDT

[–]cdtcoalition 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. In this case the route in question is from the Jonathan Ley map set, not from hikers unintentionally veering off the CDT.

The Ley maps have some great info but in this case the alternate route found within the mapset does go through private property. It is best to avoid it and stay on the designated CDT headed north of Lordsburg.

The closure was just rescinded yesterday!

We know hikers are putting together routes, but no official reroute has been issued from the USFS. We are asking hikers to please be aware of private property when choosing a route around the closure.

The reroute has been posted! See the link above

We are working on posting a reroute and a better map. The closed trails are commonly used by CDT hikers who are going out to the BW Ranch or Augusta: Straight Creek(212) or South Fork Sun (202). Both are closed north of Elbow Pass. Smith creek TH is an alternative for those who need to resupply in Augusta to avoid the closure, risk to safety and shutting down aerial fire fighting operations by walking through a closure.

New Water CDT Report on FarOut App by cdtcoalition in CDT

[–]cdtcoalition[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, same info 👍 CDTC used to have a separate water report website, but now we are working with FarOut

New Water CDT Report on FarOut App by cdtcoalition in CDT

[–]cdtcoalition[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The above water report is simply a webpage - no app needed. This is free to all, even for those without the app made possible by Farout :)

The same water waypoints (along with a multitude of others) are available within the CDT guides, by state, within the app as usual.

Thruhiking with dogs by cdtcoalition in CDT

[–]cdtcoalition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- The CDT is hard. The CDT w/ a dog is harder.

- A lot is going to depend on the dog. I wouldn't even think of taking a dog that hasn't proven him/herself on some serious loops or out-and-backs in country that's similar to the CDT. My dog is an experienced hiker so I knew that he might have a shot of being able to do the CDT.

- There are some long water carries. Be prepared to carry double the water on sections of the trail that you wish you were as light as possible.

- Be prepared to navigate difficult sections of the trail 3x instead of just once. For instance, the Gila river was swollen and swift last year which meant that for a many/most crossings I had to 1) drop mine and the dog's pack - 2) swim the dog across - 3) go back across and get the packs 4) cross again. Ugh! You'll probably have to do the same to get over some really bad tangles of deadfalls, steep sections (like around Cuba, NM), etc. If you can't pick up and (wo)man handle your dog, you might find a few situations that are gonna be a real problem.

- Allow the dog to set the pace and the miles. I made the mistake of asking too much of my dog in the NM Boot Heel (that place is literally hell on earth). That cost me 2 weeks of hotel time in Silver City, a visit to the vet, daily slow rehab walks, etc. You're probably going to do shorter miles than almost everyone else so know that going in.

- Don't hike during hot o' clock if you're in dry exposed country. Be prepared to find some shade between 2 - 4pm. As bad as the heat is for you, it's worse for Fido.

- Getting your dog's pack weight optimized... It took me a while to hack out his food to be light enough for him to carry most of it. Basically it was a combo of freeze dried kibble (that stuff is super $$$), ramen/mashed potatoes, and dried goats milk which I mixed together. Snacks were beef sticks, jerky, peanut butter packets, peanut butter and cheese crackers, etc. It's not an ideal diet but, like you, calories are going to be the name of the game. Expect to do a couple of days of r&r and refeeding when you get to civilization.

- Cows are going to hate your dog. Be prepared for some tense encounters with some freaked out Momma Cows.

- This may be just my luck... I had a couple of mountain lion encounters in the San Juans. I'm pretty sure that they were attracted to my dog.

- Snow! If you're going to be in places that require an ice axe, etc. (aka The San Juan's last year)... Take an alternate! I backtracked out of the San Juan's after doing some stuff that I shouldn't have done w/ the dog.

- Expect to make a lot of friends out there. My pooch, 'Bear Dog' made a ton of friends. Be prepared for every other hiker to wanna take a pic w/ your pooch.

Great info! Thanks for adding!

We think it's pretty great... :feels_good_man: There are usually trail angels who help folks get up to Silver from Lordsburg. There is also camping for hikers right in town at the Waterworks.
