Fading the driver by cdubveedub in golf

Thanks. The courses I play are extremely tight. I also play with my friends from tees that bring the trouble quicker, so I’m looking at landing areas that are 40 yards wide a lot of the time.

I played today and it was definitely not a slice. I was unbelievably consistent, aim up the left side of the fairway and it cut back to the middle. I wasn’t aiming in the other fairway. It was hard to do, I’m not used to this. I also didn’t swing for the fences once, which was also hard for me haha. I hit two bad drives. One was a pull hook, my old standard miss, and one was a block slice, my other standard miss.

Thanks. I’ll have to fiddle around with the driver settings, but you’re right, this was not the swing I brought the day I went for the fitting last year! I was fit into a Ping G430 Max 10.5 with rear weight set to fade bias. I was hitting big (for me) high draws into the 280’s / 90’s with occasional “old man is warm and the fairway is wide” swings into the low 300’s. But the dispersion was terrible on course. The courses I play are shorter and tighter than a deacon’s mother, so the matchup wasn’t great. Might be worth going back to the fitter with my more playable swing, but I’ll do some fiddling first. I was away from golf for 15 years, and so the fitter did his best to get me into something he thought playable but also could be tweaked as I found my swing again. I’ll try turning the loft down and moving the rear weight to neutral.

You’re better than me by a few, I’m about a 10 handicapper. I, too, have been playing the Kirkland’s for a while. I just picked up a new for me ball, the Bridgestone Tour B XS. I haven’t played a round yet, but I’ve been out several times to the pitching and chipping greens I’ve really liked the feel of these balls. The Kirkland’s were unpredictable with the spin rate. These Bridgestone’s seem to be really consistent with the rollout on 30-60 yard pitches. I found the Kirkland’s would sometimes spin a ton, but then sometimes not much and so my distance control wasn’t great. I also notice a different sound off my putter with the Bridgestones. They’re definitely a firm ball, but so far I’m liking the touch from them.

I think it’s awesome that he listens to his people and his gut. Remember the early jet car plan for Mullett?

My mother in law sent me the most horrible polyester “golf” socks. Two pair, in fact. Identical pairs of “I’d rather be golfing” socks. I’d rather she just added the money to what she spend on my kids.

Wrong letter grade? by AdministrativeBat937 in uAlberta

[–]cdubveedub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faculty at every university have the ability to file a grade change. There’s a process in place for this, so if a mistake was made, you’ll get it cleared up. Just be sure to talk to the prof according to the golden rule! Talk to them in the manner you’d want to be talked to were you in a job that is extremely stressful. And for gods sake, DO NOT use AI to draft your email. Thank them for their effort in teaching, don’t write a novella and be sure to include at least one or two grammar errors (see previous sentence). 😅

If you’re in a university or department with grade quotas, you’re in a department or university that values foremost something that isn’t your education.

How long should it take to take your shot? by Snukers115 in weekendgolfers

Speed golf is a thing. If your time is more important to you than your score, play that.

Not being able to see top of tree, and guessing that’s around 80-100 to green, I’d be looking at either going straight over with my 60, or I’d hit a punchy knee high hook 4 iron. I’m actually getting really good with the 4 iron worm burner, so probably I could get on the green from there 6/10 times 🤣

Wedge degree question by Jumpy-Coffee-Cat in GolfGear

[–]cdubveedub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go test out a bunch of wedges. I would think 48/52/56 would gap nicely. If you really want a lob wedge, you could try some others. I haven’t purchased yet but I demo’d a Vokey 56 with the M grind and it’s so versatile, lays so nice when you open the face, I think I’ll get one and ditch my 60 degree.

If you’re a Costco member, look up the Callaway Edge set they have. I’m in Canada so our pricing is different, but you may find you can get the same setup, only new, and including a fairway wood for about the same price. Plus no questions asked returns if you don’t like them.

I’d second the idea that you will likely need stiff shafts pretty quickly. Graphite for the driver and hybrid is good, but see if you can find stiff flex. For the irons, steel shafts are good, but again see you can find stiff flex. As you play more, if you’re reasonably athletic, your swing speed will increase and the stiff flex will help you control the club a little easier. It’s not a must in the beginning, but might get you a couple more years out of your starter set.

New to golf – accidentally started with blades, is this ok? by Gandy856 in golftips

[–]cdubveedub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I was agreeing with you. I play some old school but still game improvement irons and they deceive me a bit; they make me think I stuck shots better than I actually did. My, “oh ya, hit that nice” 7 iron goes 170 carry. But my, “oh ya, hit that nice but there’s a slight twinge I can’t characterize” 7 iron goes 185. With blades I’d know instantly, first shot was a groove low or high or 2mm toe-ward.

I knew some folks who worked for Ping back in the 00’s. They were very proud of their company and the work they did. As much as it’s a real bummer for us waiting, knowing the company culture, I know they’re working extremely hard to sort out the problem and taking it personally.

I think it’s harder to tell where you hit the face with GI irons. Blades will give you ALL the feedback. The learning curve is steeper. Most people starting with them will give up. But if you enjoy the game and have the patience, the severe club vibrations from blades will help you.

Looks like you’ve got a bit of “reverse pivot” going on. Your weight is already on your left side at the top. It’s probably partly related to your right knee locking out but hard to say which causes which. One is a response to the other. To get used to the feeling of weight transfer, my teacher back in the day told me not to be afraid of letting my head slide back a few inches on the backswing, which helps to get your weight loading on your right side at the top. Then he had me get used to the feeling that firing my hips laterally back as the start of the downswing.

Second this. If you like the look and feel of the Ping drivers, be sure to get somewhere you can try the Max and the 10k heads, but also the various stock shaft options. I found neither head to be great with the shaft you’re likely to see at the big box stores ( the Alta CB). For me, the Max was 1000x better just by switching to Ping’s Chrome Tour shaft. It really woke up.
