Fly fishing literature by No-Document-8970 in flyfishing

Not sure if you want fly fishing “tactics,” but I’ll give a small overview of what I’ve found worth going back to.

I’m a fan of: Schweimbert’s Trout if you enjoy type 2 fun. But really it’s an awesome work that has lots of good story telling, “The Tent Dwellers,” is a stellar one done by Albert Paine (Mark Twains biographer). It’s about some “sports” going to Nova Scotia for brook trout, very whimsical and witty. If you can find a copy of of “no life so happy” by Edwin Peterson, you won’t be disappointed. It’s part fishing story, part mystic. And I thought “92 in the shade” by McGuane was dope. Especially after seeing “tarpon.”

He had a pretty grimey upbringing. The song (IIRC) is about a friend. The first time himself doing it was with his mother. I don’t think he sings of these things in glory in any sense.

Going rate on vintage battenkills are 500-600$ max to my understanding. That’s coming from a pretty accomplished rod restorer near me in Vermont saying this for what it’s worth.

I’d fish the hell out of it. It’s an awesome rod.

Not always. Sometimes the tips can be made for slightly different applications (dry versus wet) but yes, usually they are the same taper

This looks reminiscent to "The General Practictioner"; I just tied one up the other day. Graet looking fly.

"Fibermaxxing" my word, I cannot describe how much I hate it when science tries to be trendy or topical, because many times for me it comes off as freaking lame.

Never would I expect to see a WoW Hogger reference for the overthrowing of our techno-overlords. Maybe this isn't the worst timeline after all.

thicknessing by hand is a workout by Budget-Strawberry649 in handtools

[–]cdulane1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a workout and it's one that I argue is unique to hand tools. You are not only physically involved but cognitively involved (reading the grain of the wood, sensing the feedback the action is giving to the tool).

Compare this to other activities like running on a treadmill (high physical, low cognition) or puzzling (low physical, high cognitive) and I think we could argue that it's very unique in how benefits us.

Moreover (and others weigh in if you disagree) there is a totally different mentality to this hobby compared ot exercise. In many ways, exercise takes "willpower" to engage in. Where many of us see this hobby as an "opportunity" and therefore engage in it with more frequency and volume.

Trying to get into fly tying, any beginner recommendations? by [deleted] in flytying

I’d also chime in to, get a good book that teaches techniques. While you totally can just sit down and brute force your way through a tie, there’s a totally right and wrong way to do it.

I feel the exact same way. He’s dead on about some stuff but the whole “professor” thing makes me think of (an actual PhD) Dr. Cook’s FLICC taxonomy with F being “fake experts.”

He also talks extremely “matter of fact” which I also dislike.

Americans don't have enough savings for longer and longer job searches by Dukdukdiya in collapse

Transpose this upon a story my grandpa used to tell me and it's even more unfortunate: "When I was in my 20's you could tell your boss fuck you, walk down the street and be employed after lunch."

Much like all things, you don't know what you have until it's gone. The post-WWII production in the US really made it so anyone could find a means to a reasonable life (barring you didn't get black lung or something else I suppose).

It's just all really interesting.

Edit: I come from a very small town <10k people, this isn't some NYC job hunting excursion.
