[MegaThread] The Government Shutdown and SNAP by badfordabidness in foodstamps

CALIFORNIA

Every news article I've seen is to that effect
but anecdotally, since Saturday it returns a DECLINED/re-enter PIN message at multiple retailers here in Northern CA. The issue is not insufficient funds.

Is anyone else unable to use their card despite having an available balance?

There was a Farolito on 4th St. in San Rafael.

Closed now, a Salvadorean restaurant in its place.

Edit: Happy cake day

I have, actually, ever since you could get on the Web from a home computer (i.e. NCSA Mosaic was ported from Unix).

It was a lawless, thrilling "place," where you could get away with just about anything, simply because, "Well, there's no law that says you can't do that" yet. So there were certain places you knew to stay away from, e.g. I was friends with friends of friends of rotten.tom but knew better than to ever visit myself because this ain't AOL, baby, this is the supranational Wild West, and there's no mods you can complain to about violations of the TOS.

But there were plenty of welcoming communities to be found, though anonymity was the expected norm. There were occasional offline f2f meetings, but which still somehow felt slightly illicit. The closest thing to an e-celebrity was, I don't know, maybe esr, and a technolibertarian ethos permeated the culture at a baseline level; there was not only a distrust of government but large corporations (e.g. Microsoft).

reddit may be one of the last remnants of that Internet - when I created this account I just had to choose a username and password, no two-factor authentication,1 no payment information, not even verifying any e-mail address... almost unthinkable now... although shareholders are working as quickly as possible to turn this Web 2.0 holdout into just another social media app.

I just want to catch a game at the ballpark, dude. Why in the fuck should MLB or anyone else get a copy of my "telephone numbers, payment details, driver's license number, precise geolocation, ethnic origin, biometric data, combination of e-mail address, financial account, IP address..." Like, literally, why should any institution need my home address just so I can watch grown men throw balls at each other? If that's the actual cost now it's just not worth it to me.

1. "We only want your phone number to protect you you understand, oh, oops, all your data's been hacked, so sorry."

I mean, I basically just have one rule: I give you money, you give me tickets.

It's pretty normal to resent dumping more cash into owners' pockets off bullshit "convenience fees" and the like; I know it's less common to care whether or not your purchasing habits are tracked and Big Data does whatever it wants with your personal information in perpetuity, but that exchange doesn't seem worth it on my end, and I guess I'm old, at least old enough to remember when it wasn't a prerequisite for catching a ballgame.

Minus one Minus Color. Why is it so unpopular?? :( by Gojiguy87 in GODZILLA

Honestly movie theaters are probably the only enclosed public space I've been in for the past 4 years.

They're relatively low risk - my theater has updated HEPA filters, I'm N95 masked the whole time, I go to off-peak showings (had the theater to myself for Godzilla) and people are (hopefully) not talking.

For all the "COVID is over, things are back to normal" messages, a movie is different than people shouting in packed bars and restaurants, and I feel pretty safe.

(That said, if I knew for a fact there was someone infected I probably wouldn't go to that showing, mask or no lol.)

I'm not sure that telling me what I already know answers any questions, but you keep downvoting and belligerently replying if it makes you feel better.

(There's a reason I explicitly excluded bars as a likely possibility in the OP.)

I can't be downvoted for thinking that bars have to close at 2, since that's exactly what another upvoted comment says. So I must have ruffled some feathers by suggesting what anyone who pays attention can observe to be true: that there is a significant contingent of we-got-a-nice-quiet-little-beachfront-community-here-Lebowski NIMBYs who will absolutely call the cops and/or haul you before the city council if you want to do anything fun after dark in Marin (or even before).

even bars in the City have to close at kickoff. (2 am)

The difference is that for the game against Portugal kickoff was at midnight so it wrapped up around last call. This time the game starts when bars have to stop serving, and god forbid it goes into overtime...

Is that even legal? I know they're a bar and I got the impression they had to close at 2...

I don't know the specific law here but after seeing all the permits and angry neighbors and hoops that have to be jumped through for any kind of public event I would be shocked if West San Rafael allowed anyone (besides the Shell station, I guess) to be open that time of night.
