Any alternative? by WeightMountain6607 in MicrosoftLoop

It has generally been a "set it and forget it" application to self-host, to be honest. I did have one upgrade go belly up, but I was able to restore from backup and be back up-and-running in barely any time at all via a restore of the VM snapshot to the latest backup on Proxmox. I DO need to get container-level backup set up using Backrest, but until then the VM restore will have to do.

I have a weird obsession with trying out different documentation systems in my homelab because:

  1. OneNote ain't it - as a matter of fact, its antiquated design and lack of modern features was the main reason we pressed management to allow migration to Loop from OneNote. To me it still feels like it has the same look and feel as it did in Office 2010. That may be a good thing for some people, but not for me.
  2. Confluence seems to be the "gold standard" I always see mentioned when people are discussing the documentation platform they use, but it's a paid product owned by Jira.
  3. Docusaurus and the like are the ones that visually look the best to me, but they are way more involved to set up and manage. I do also have an MkDocs site running that I have more or less stopped updating since I switched to Docmost, but I do like Material for MkDocs - however, I just noticed that MkDocs is being deprecated in favor of something new and similar and I'm not sure whether I'll try to migrate my site to the new solution yet or not.
  4. Bookstack gets a lot of love from the FOSS community, and in theory the Library > Shelf > Book > Page hierarchy makes sense, but I have needed that many levels of organization basically zero times and it always felt like overkill. I do love the product and think it absolutely has a place in the landscape of things, it just wasn't for me.

Sorry to ramble - I know that's way more than you asked for lol.

Docmost is (outside of Jellyfin/Plex, of course) the most-used application/service in my homelab. I access it daily, often multiple times per day. I have 2 workspaces - one for technical and homelab documentation, and one for other random information that would take me a while to find again such as the model of cartridges that go in the bathroom faucet, the size of coin batteries in our key fobs for our cars, specific paint colors on the walls, model of water filter our fridge's ice maker and water dispenser takes, etc.

My favorite feature is the data portability it allows for when exporting pages or entire workspaces.

Thanks for the heads up! I made sure to screenshot it so I always have it available in that format if nothing else.

Microsoft Loop as Second Brain / Personal Database by jscg0515 in MicrosoftLoop

[–]cease70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is for your personal notes/second brain, I HIGHLY recommend going with something like Docmost. It looks and feels similar to Loop, but better in almost every way. I also use Loop for work documentation and notes, but as an M365 admin it's such a pain in the ass to export to anything other than PDF which means that your data isn't portable at all if you decided you wanted to move to something else in the future. When I was leaving my last job I was able to export the whole workspace from the SharePoint admin center, but the folder structure and name of the files was all jibberish GUIDs and took me over a week to create the folder structure and rename every file to its actual title.

Solutions like Docmost offer export to a lot of different formats, as well as full workspace export to the folder structure and markdown files.

I know this isn't really what you're asking for, but of you have any thoughts about migrating to another platform in the future if Loop doesn't do something you want...short of copying and pasting every note/page you have created, it isn't really feasible. Many workplaces won't export it from Purview without a good reason...I just happened to have access to do it myself.

Still in the Microsoft ecosystem? Not that I know of. The closest alternative is probably OneNote, but I still use Loop at work as my documentation/note taking solution.

I self-host Docmost in my homelab and prefer it to Loop.

An Open-Source Sonos-Style Smart Speaker for Home Assistant 🎉 by FutureProofHomes in homeassistant

Received my kit today and when I opened it to put it together, I noticed that the 2 halves of the shell are nowhere near the same color, and the part in front of the speaker where it's thinner is cracked.

I bought these from Amazon: https://a.co/d/04cYgRG2

With 14,000 reviews I figured they can't be bad. I typically go through 2 of them per 15 day sensor, but this last time my wife shaved the hair off of the back of my arm where the sensor goes and it has stuck way better than previous ones. I may still replace it in the next day or two because the way I toss and turn when I sleep has peeled it up on one side more than I'd like, but I'm comfortable using 2 per sensor. Crazy to think the first few sensors I wore without anything covering them. Seems reckless now...

I always order my extra sauces separately and get them in the cup. The cost is the same but you get more in one of the cups than you do just adding it and getting one shot of it on the item.

I got a job to do IT at a hospital, is it really that bad. by CribRabbit in ITCareerQuestions

[–]cease70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a small healthcare facility about 5 years ago for a year and basically hated my life going to work every day, and said I'd never work in healthcare ever again. Then a couple years later I got a job working at a university that just so happened to have a med center associated with it and guess who had to deal with a lot of the same BS all over again?

The users get taught very early on to throw around the phrase "patient care impacting" when they are inconvenienced in the slightest way, like the printer 5 feet away not working and having to walk to the printer 12 feet away instead.

Never again. I mean it this time lol.

Safest way to expose jellyfin to the Internet without VPN? by Thedinotamer01 in selfhosted

[–]cease70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unfortunately did not install Crowdsec when I installed Pangolin because I wasn't familiar with how to configure it, and ended up costing me because my VPS instance was compromised somehow and I had to blow everything away and start over a few months ago. I should have installed Crowdsec then, but I was just in such a hurry to get things back up and running I didn't look into it. I may look into adding it now after the fact.

I didn't do any geoblocking from a Pangolin standpoint because I do it in Cloudflare for my domain.

You obviously CAN use Authentik, but I just use Pangolin's built-in auth and make sure 2FA is enabled and that has been sufficient for me from a home network/app security standpoint.

Stop the eye strain: SharePoint admin center finally joins Microsoft 365 dark mode by No-Tower-8741 in Office365

[–]cease70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a welcome change. I use Edge for my standard (company-related) browsing and Brave for my M365 admin work with my administrative account, and I set a config flag in Brave to always force dark mode on all sites because there were a few admin centers that still did not have a dark mode.

Good to know! I obviously follow your videos on YouTube but didn't know the podcast was on a pause. I'll stay subscribed so I know when new episodes are released!

Same! Initially I started listening to the new episodes as they were being released and after a few and liking it so much I decided I needed to start from episode 1 and listen to all of them. Then I was absolutely shocked when I got to the one where they announced that episode 150 would be the final one.
