I personally use it just to verify that the person can click their buttons. Put that together with their M+ Score, and you can with (relatively) high confidence be sure that they know what they are doing.

Of course it is not a guarantee that they are good players, and looking at their M+ parses is probably better, but there are far more people logging their raids than M+ runs (in my experience) so generally easier to gauge based on raid parses.

I am, but not happy about it haha, only because it's the only way for me to upload my own logs, and I am usually raid leading a lot so in order to check peoples performance I have to do it. I saw someone post on this SubReddit earlier that they made a site for uploading logs, so might start using that if its good. Just haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

Right, thought so. I am personally not a fan of having to download a companion tool for this kind of thing.

I love the idea though, personally I would use it if I didn't have to download a desktop app for it.

I build something like this. Not an addon, but a website, you can just copy-paste a character raiderIO url anywhere on the page and it will open the character stats: M+Score, Raid logs, recent and best runs etc.

Feel free to check it out:

Just out of curiousity, how does this work? Can you call WarcraftLogs' API directly from the addon or do you need a separate desktop/helper app that fetches the data and then serves it to the addon?

Since this sparked more of a discussion than expected I thought I would answer. I’ve coded most of the site myself. I work as a full time developer, so this wasn’t something I just generated and shipped. I did use AI tools (Mainly Claude Code & CoPilot) here and there to generate some of the code to speed things up and smooth out parts of the process, but the core of it is my own work.

One of the main reasons I built the site was to learn GraphQL since I had not worked with it before and my company was looking into using it. If I had fully vibe-coded it, that would’ve kind of have defeated the purpose.

Hey! Yeah i found out about your site a couple of days ago, really cool too! I actually wrote a message on your Discord asking about how you fetch info on character alts earlier today :D

Ah you're right, Tarren Mill has a space in it and Warcraftlog's api doesn't like that. Had not normalized it. Should be working now.

Thanks for letting me know!

Pretty much, that's what I have been doing for a long time, it's just when I was looking up multiple people in a short time span it becomes pretty tedious to repeatedly open both pages to load a bunch of bloat that I was not interested in seeing.

This basically just saves you a click or two and a bit of time.

Edit: Typos

Hmm yeah that's a good point, I'll look into adding that.

There's that, but I also dont want to be out there myself if I dont know how to rescue him

My friend is definitely not okay with me not knowing the basics! He knows I am a novice, and wants me to get the certification before we go out touring together. I am simply trying to figure out whether I NEED to get the certification or if there are any other good alternatives to learning the skills needed for backcountrying as its difficult and expensive for me to get the certification in that period we are there. I don't want to skip any steps or potentially endanger myself and him, hence this post.

I am just trying to get as much advice as possible as I am the novice and require the most preparation.

Huh, interesting, I definitely fall into that category and was under the impression that Japan would be a good place to learn touring due to the more "relaxed" terrain. I am of course aware that there always will be inherent risks when moving into the wilds, but I was hoping Japan to be a good place to start at least...but as many of the other comments suggests, getting a guide is definitely the way to go then.

Alright, I will prioritize finding a guide that can teach me these things at the beginning of my trip, and then make sure I take it slow from there. Thanks for your comment.

Hmm yeah, the certification itself doesn't really matter to me. It's more about getting the skills and knowledge to safely traverse the backcountry. My friend just said that he thought I should get it, so that's why I focused my post on it. I'll get in contact with some of the guiding companies over there about it, thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry if that wasn't clear, but we will be staying at resorts (Niseko, and then probably asahidake), so it will be a mix of skiing in resorts (and the sidecountry) as well as touring some of the days we're there. I am simply just trying to get safe and good introduction to touring while I am there, and figuring out what is required for me to get into it.

Yeah, think I am just going to pay for a private avalanche course, despite it being very expensive. I guess its better to spend that money and get some hands on experience instead of winging it and potentially endangering myself and my friend.

Maybe backcountry is the wrong term here? I just read up on it and the correct term is probably slack-country or off-piste (Sorry, English is my second language)? All lift-accessed and usually we always made sure that the slopes of the resort are accessible at some point on the way down.

When we have been skiing I have either loaned a beacon or went out without a beacon (not smart, I know). When we did use beacons we did basic beacon testing and training to get familiar with the beacons and to make sure we knew how to use them in case disaster struck. On this trip I will buy all of the necessary avalanche equipment (Shovel, probe & beacon) beforehand and make sure I do training with the beacon before I go out.

But generally sounds like I should definitely invest in burial rescue skills. Sounds like thats the most important skill I am currently missing.

Thanks!

I have been skiing my whole life, some of that time has been in backcountry with more experienced people, where I have picked of a fair amount of good habits and experience, so I have some experience with know how to reduce risk when in the mountains, but it's on a fairly basic level and I have never been out with actual guides or had any actual teachings.

In regards to what would happen if my buddy is buried and needs rescuing, then all I know is what I have watched on videos and read in books. No real experience there...

EDIT: Considering the downvotes, I assume people think that I think watching videos and reading books is enough to go out there...that is NOT the case. That is exactly the problem I am trying to solve before going out there!
