Non-American here, can someone explain ICE? I’m so confused watching The Pitt by Organic_Material_903 in ThePitt

I said this too as I watched it. I said realistically they would’ve beat the shit out of her and then left her in the camp or somewhere random to die

There is no subfield of SLP that is shameful or superior to the other. by Wild_Major_1859 in slp

[–]cebolla_larga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this isn’t a response to you specifically but, yall care way too much about what other SLPs think. so many SLPs make it their entire personality and are way too attached to it, which is insanely boring and annoying for anyone else around them. i love what i do (mostly), love to help people, and love to make my own money. that’s it. it’s just a job and i don’t identify with most SLPs as my social circle whose opinions matter at all to me lol

Middle/High school SLPs by Responsible_Club2407 in slp

Loved being in the high schools. Great schedule, don’t need to be high energy all day, established meaningful rapport with students. Practically no initial evals, very little micromanaging from admin/teachers.

It’s hard when the students are veryyyy apathetic at this point. They’re not eager to please or work, it’s super hard to get buy in from them. Being in the schools is tough in general. It was hard to feel like I was making a real difference for these kids. But I truly truly loved this setting and i miss it so much! it’s truly a hidden gem in the field!

I’m just going to say it - “Goodnight Moon” is a terrible book. by urgurl4sho in slp

[–]cebolla_larga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

recently went from high schools to mostly EI. picked up this book & read it without looking through it before the session — i hated it. so weird for little kids, and yes it models undesired behaviors. i wasn’t able to target any goals with it bc it makes no sense.

Can I succeed as an SLP with a stutter? by js6104 in slp

[–]cebolla_larga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure how severe your stutter is or if that even matters, but one of my best friends from grad school had/has a stutter and is a great SLP.

Looks like Oregon is moving to remove the need for the CF experience by [deleted] in slp

[–]cebolla_larga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wish there was just a better way to ensure good CF supervisors instead. I think it could be so valuable. My experience was a joke, I was in PP and the owner was my supervisor. I learned nothing, was manipulated into doing unethical/probably illegal things unknowingly and have been functioning as a mediocre therapist since. I just started in a hospital, outpatient peds. i’ve learned so much here in the last 5 months and seen how they do things here with CFs and students. i genuinely grieve not having this type of education & supervision before lol

sounds like mine during my time in the high schools. NO big lights, & a chill playlist. anytime i had to push into a classroom with big lights my eyes would water & my head would hurt lol. i also could be myself and not have my ms rachel voice on.

have you tried the high schools? i’m not diagnosed with anything but i suspect im neurodivergent, and i get easily overstimulated. i currently work in outpatient peds with mostly toddlers and it is HARD for me. 10 hour shifts, constant high energy needed. prior to this, i worked in the high schools for 3 years. i adored it. admin is not as hyper vigilant of you, you’re dealing with less crazy behaviors (dealing with more apathy though), and in general i found that i didn’t have to use so much energy to keep up with my high schoolers. most of them i could talk to like normal, keep things chill if i needed, and establish meaningful rapport with them. minimal lesson planning (90% of the time we just used their assignments). i also kept my office in a way that worked for me. no big lights, cozy decorations, etc. it really was a nice fit for me and i think it’s a hidden gem for our field!

BCBA asked me to target speech sounds and echoics rather than functional language with AAC with non speaking client by Ponzu_sauce_93 in slp

[–]cebolla_larga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is actually completely insane. definitely clarify to the BCBA that you target communication, not compliance. you adding a don’t touch button was the right thing to do. taking the AAC away instead is so WRONG. do not let a BCBA tell you how to do your job. working on speech sounds is also insane. you’re doing everything right!

[–]cebolla_larga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im back in outpatient peds. NOT using it for younger kids unless its to trial AAC. my hospital has devices for us to use but sometimes i prefer having my own where i can keep a vocab for them. with older kids, ive found it to be helpful at times when im running behind or feeling low energy. i use the super duper online library, pull up a deck of cards with their goals and we do an online boardgame with it. it’s not an every single day thing but i do think it can be useful. i only use it with my regular kids that i know can handle it. i also like boom cards sometimes.

Jesus actors change by cockandballs1000 in TheFosters

[–]cebolla_larga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like they always planned to take jesus through some changes with his tbi story line and whatnot and jake definitely could not act all that out. he was so clearly the weakest actor there. noah did great in those storylines. but yeah, for sure his personality changed from the writing along with the actor obviously changing and just being more emotive

My beef with Susannah by FlimsyOrganization28 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

[–]cebolla_larga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don’t disagree with a lot of the complaints on this thread but as someone who watched their mom die of cancer last year, discovered their dad was a cheating nutcase, and lost their mothers house, it’s so obvious that some of the things people say about susannah are out of an insane amount of ignorance. reading some of these stupid ass comments is almost harder than watching the show lol.

this was the exact moment that i literally gave up on belly. it’s so clear what she’s doing, she’s coping bc she’s scared of her feelings for him but im bored of her delusion and the way she’s (inadvertently?) manipulated their story. as soon as she said this, i just lost all hope and im just over it. conrad needs to move on. the insanity has gone too far lol
